The official Olympic Games date back to 1896.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was up and running and had organized the very first games that year. They were held in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens.
Every 4 years since, (or every Olympiad if you want to sound official), the games commence again in a new host city. The four-year timeline honors the ancient games which inspired the modern day sporting event we know today.
As an international competition that brings the world together, the games symbolizes our global community and also gives the Olympic host city a chance to shine.
2018 marks the 23rd or XXIII Olympic Winter Games hosted by Pyeongchang, South Korea. Check out 10 of the most popular Olympic cities from the past.
