Our journey to Sikkim began as my friends and I set off from Kochi’s Nedumbassery Airport, filled with excitement and anticipation. After landing at Bagdogra, we jumped into a cab arranged for us, winding our way through the hills to the peaceful embrace of Sikkim. We spent our first night at the cozy Tag Along Hostel, allowing us to acclimatize to the high altitude and cold weather. After hours of travel, a long-craved rest gave us the perfect start to our adventure the next day.
The next morning, Day 1, we headed out for a day trip to East Sikkim. Our first stop was Nathula Pass, where the high-altitude landscapes and sense of history left us in awe. Visiting the LAC (Line of Actual Control) and speaking with the army officers stationed there was indeed a unique experience. Baba Mandir added a spiritual touch to the journey.
That evening, we settled into a homestay at Zuluk Top, where stunning views and warm hospitality helped us thrive on the cold night.
On Day 2, we woke up to sun-kissed mountains, with the mighty Mt. Kanchenjunga standing tall in the distance. After bidding farewell to our host, we visited Tsomgo Lake, a serene spot with calm, reflective waters that captivated us. Along the way, we were thrilled to see groups of yaks grazing peacefully on the hillsides, adding to the wild beauty of the landscape. Watching these huge animals effortlessly climb steep hills kept our curiosity alive for the rest of the trip. Nearby, Elephant Lake and Kupup Lake, each with their own unique charm, completed the magical experience.
Finally, we made our way back to Gangtok, revisiting some scenic routes and capturing more stunning views. We enjoyed another relaxing night at Tag Along Hostel, reflecting on the adventures we’d already had and looking forward to more.
The following day, Day 3, we explored Gangtok itself, visiting the historic Rumtek Monastery, dating back to the reign of the kings. The capital was full of life, with bustling markets, beautiful monasteries, and scenic viewpoints. Every corner of Gangtok offered something special, revealing more of the city’s charm and deepening our appreciation for its unique culture.
Day 4 was one of the highlights of our trip. We took the Yangang Cable Ride, India’s longest and steepest ropeway, with views that were both exhilarating and awe-inspiring. Later, we visited the peaceful Temi Tea Garden, where rolling hills and green tea plantations created a soothing atmosphere. At Namchi Char Dham, replicas of India’s revered temples added a sense of spiritual depth to our experience. By evening, we reached Ravangla and settled into the Alpine Jungle Stay, surrounded by the sounds of nature.
On Day 5, we visited Ravangla Buddha Park, where a towering Buddha statue seemed to bless the beautiful park below. We also explored the historic Rabdentse Ruins and wandered through a bird sanctuary, immersing ourselves in Sikkim’s history and natural beauty. That night, we stayed in Pelling, eager to see what the next day would bring.
Day 6 began with a visit to Pema Yangste Monastery, where the peaceful atmosphere felt almost timeless. The nearby Skywalk gave us sweeping views of the valleys and an up-close view of the snow-covered Mt. Kanchenjunga, perfectly showcasing Sikkim’s incredible landscapes. We also visited Kecheopalri Lake, a sacred lake surrounded by forests, where we enjoyed a short trek to a viewpoint with an aerial view of the lake. A hidden cave, a milestone during the trek, marked the spot where the Rinpoche once meditated. To top off the experience, we had an amazing wood-fired oven pizza made by a local couple, one of the most memorable meals of the trip.
On Day 7, we woke up early to bid farewell to beautiful Sikkim and to witness the much-anticipated sunrise, where the first rays of sunlight hit the tip of Mt. Kanchenjunga, gradually lighting the entire mountain in orange. With hearts full of adventure and beautiful memories, we made our way back to the airport, feeling grateful for every moment spent in Sikkim.
This journey was a perfect blend of natural beauty, spirituality, and friendship, creating memories that will stay with us for a lifetime.
Reminiscing about the experience as I write, my heart longs to visit northern Sikkim, which could surpass all that I’ve experienced so far a part of the journey we weren’t fortunate enough to explore this time.
