Neither Emma or I had done a whole lot of planning before we landed so we decided wandering towards the city centre would be the best bet. We ended up running into a museum with an outside exhibit and a gorgeous cathedral beside it. Turns out when we entered the cathedral we walked in on a wedding! We watched for a while and listened to a psalm before we thought it would be best to leave the couple to get married without strangers watching.
After a relatively early night and quick tapas for dinner (for 🇪🇸 standards) we got up at a good time and had a very full Sunday exploring. We first wanted to go to la Plaza Major to do some people watching and try out having relaxed meal where time doesn’t matter. Despite everyone assuming sangria is the beverage of choice for people in Spain we were told by our local colleagues never to order sangria and to only order Tinto de Verano instead. So Tinto de Verano it was!
We then ventured through the city and ended up in El Retiro Park after walking for an hour or so. \240The park was gorgeous, with paths that zig zag through different areas of greenery. \240We ended up in a grass area with some older statues and landscape and ran into what can only be called an old elf jail... maybe Lord of the Rings was filmed in Madrid?
Sadly right as we found this little gem there was crazy thunder cracking and we ran to the nearest park gates and into a cafe. Earlier than expected end to the exploration but great day nonetheless. 😄
