Dentist Ken Fox’s huge concrete statues in the gold rush town of Auburn are giants in motion. \240Beginning in the 1960’s Fox began creating his huge cement works in front of his dental practice. One of the first works, a nude male, was so shocking to the community that they began rerouting the school buses away from his office to avoid children gazing upon the statue. Other works include two massive amazon women, one with a bow the other with a spear, and a towering Chinese “Coolie” figure working on the transcontinental railroad. His largest work reached a massive height of 42 feet of solid concrete, weighing over 100 tons. Fox has compared his works to other roadside oddities saying they are poorly constructed, while his are built to last, like the highways. \240Despite the initial outrage at the giant statues, the city eventually warmed to Fox’s creations and even commissioned an original work based on gold prospector Claud Chana who first discovered gold in the area. Fox’s gold prospector now sits just outside of the Auburn courthouse.

“Located just 73 feet north was the office of the Pony Express for its entire 19 month history. The stables were located just west on the NE corner of Curry (Ormsby) and Third Streets.”

Nevada State Museum: Your first step brings you into the former Carson City Mint building where coins were minted from 1870 to 1893 – – 57 issues of silver, all bearing the distinguishing “CC” mint mark. On display is the formidable Coin Press No. 1 and a complete set of Carson City Morgan dollar.

Underground mine: The walls and ceiling are plastered with actual minerals and ore donated by several Nevada mining companies and from the Comstock. The tunnels are timbered and braced just like those in actual mines and the floors have mine car tracks and plumbing for compressed air and water. You will cross over an elevator cage and floor from an old shaft on the Comstock. You will see a powder magazine and costumed figures preparing dynamite and fuses. There are men operating drills, loading ore carts and performing other tasks in the tunnels.
