April 30 2024

We departed Richmond International Airport at 4 pm today. Arrived at JFK International Airport @ 5:30 pm.

Our flight to London was delayed 30 minutes. However we did depart @ 8:15 pm.

We flew Business Class over. It was better than Econ but not great. After several hours the old legs start twitching and so goes the night wishing for a bed.

May 01 2024

On our arrival @ 8:05am we had a bit of trouble. As I disembarked I started feeling very uneasy. Lack of sleep will do it. In 30 minutes we were no where near UK Customs. I was vomiting in a trash can as passengers passed me. An airport security officer stopped and gave me aide.

Mara & an airport official \240assisted Allie and I until a paramedic arrived. Sian, the London Ambulance paramedic found my vitals good though with a BP @ 153/100! \240Mara returned 2 times to check on us and provide aide. Sian administered Silicol. \240gave us an order for more Silicol to stabilise the stomach.

Airport personnel loaded me in a wheel chair and moved us to the head of a very long line at customs. I was asked no questions. Allie was asked 2 and we were whisked to the Chemists for our prescription. Then wheeled to a Taxi which took us directly to our hotel in Paddington.

By the time we arrived at the Indigo Hotel I was feeling more myself. Crazy start.

After resting and freshening up we went to see the Imperial War Room wher Winston Churchill commanded the British war campaigns of WwW II. This was an interesting tour. The most interesting sight was the Enigma machine used by Germany to cryptographically send messages:

Enigma Machine

We also were able to see the buildings of Parliment with the “Big Ben” clock tower:

The Clock Tower of Parliament

Parliamentary Buildings

A panoramic view of Parliament on the left with the towers of Westminster Abbey on the right

The press of so many people although impressive made great pictures very difficult. I was much for pushing to the front for a picture today.

After we returned to the hotel we ate at a very authentic Lebanese restaurant just 60-70 yards from our room. Very good food.

May 02 2024

Today we visited the British Museum, Piccadilly Circus, bought a very nice herringbone jacket and cap, made a short visit to Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens and ate Fillets at an Angus Steakhouse. A very good day.

We walked over 4 miles today our dogs and ponies are tired.

The Entrance to Paddington Station. A large hub of several subway lines and National Rail Lines. A video of the mad scene at 17:28 hours is typical and is attached for the end of the day.

May 03, 2024

Today is our last day in London. \240We will visit the British Library,

Westminster Abbey - stood in line for 30 minutes. \240The place was packed nearly constantly shoulder to shoulder. \240Hard to really enjoy the sights inside the Abbey. \240So thoroughly filled with honors, flags, badges, medals, statuary, and so many, many crypts, and tombs. \240Lots of gold everywhere. \240Very gaudy, ostentatious.

Caught the subway back to the hotel to freshen up then off to Baroque Music @ St. Martins-in-the-Fields.

As we arrive at St. Martin’s we walked around TRafalgar Square and took pictures before going into the concert.

I have listened for years to recordings made in this very famous church in London. \240The conductor, Sir Neville Marriner, whom I greatly admired was the musical director there for 53 years from 1958 - 2011. \240The music tonight was by a small chamber groups: 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass, harpsichord. \240For on number: \240Alto recorder. \240Handel, Bach, Pachelbel, Telemann, Scarlatti

After breakfast at Paul Pry we went to the Gills. \240Stephen drove us to the US Military Cemetery in Cambridge. \240Quite a beautiful and sobering cemetery. \240Many pictures

We drove on to the town of Cambridge walked and wandered through the tiny streets. \240Witnessed a protest of Israel and advocacy of Palestinians at Cambridge University, a tent village, of students protesting. \240They were not shouting. \240They were behind a wall and the building. \240Just milling around talking to each other. \240They have encamped and refuse to leave.

Drove to a sweet village and had dinner at a pub.

Today we went with Stephen to the Burghley House. \240This property is truly amazing. \240For more than what I will describe see this Wiki site: \240https://burghley.co.uk/

Burghley House is 500 years old. \240The land and gardens surrounding is 4,000 intimate acres all in closed by rock walls. \240An additional 12,000 acres or the neighboring countryside belongs to the Burghley family. \240An immense property.

We first walked the gardens and water fountains:

Garden Maze with many very interesting water features

The Ice House for Burghley House

Burghley Lake

Then there were these very interesting sculptures throughout the gardens:

So….that was interesting. \240What the house was like? \240Amazing! \240The exterior is wonderfully intricate and well maintained. \240The interior had many highly decorated rooms. \240Painting from ceiling to the floors. \240Extravagant furnishings from Italy. \240The family would travel annually to Italy and purchase furniture, art, and collectibles. \240The house is ornate and ostentatious:

The Burghley House. \240The long two story apartments to the left is the private residence of the current heirs of Burghley House.

Had to change our Peugeot SUV because of unstable & noisy front end. \240Stopped at Gills to say good bye to Step-Hen. \240Annie was at the school.

We headed off to Durham and Lanchester. \240Christine was waiting for us outside with the 2 dogs. \240It was wonderful to see her again. \240Aging and doing so much of the work herself.

Met with Paul & Judy Beaumont in Billingham and dined and with them till 6:45 pm. Judy & Allie went to a RS \240gathering and Paul & I had a good discussion about what is and what isn’t. We returned the 40 minutes back to Burnhopeside Hall at 10pm

This morning I played the Blüthner grand for an hour before breakfast. \240We met Judy and Paul @ Beamish Museum @ 10:30 am. \240Lots of new creations since we last saw it in 2018.

I played the piano for another 1 and 15 minutes then we ate at Kings Head Pub in Lanchester.

May 11

We drove not too many miles from Billingham to Grace Priory in Hambleton Yorkshire. \240It is an abandoned, destroyed Priory after the ascension of King Henry VIII. \240When He decided to cast aside his wife and the /Catholic Pope condemned the divorce Henry created the Anglican Church, the CHurch of England. \240Now Henry asked the existing clergy, priests, bishops, archbishops, monks, etc to pledge obedience and faithfulness to the new church as opposed to the Catholic Church. \240Those monasteries, parish church, & cathedral leaders not willing to acknowledge Henry as head of the Church of England were destroyed. \240Many of the leaders were severely punished if not killed.

Grace Priory was one such monastery of 2-3 dozen monks who studied and worked here.

Visited also with the Walsh’s, took a few pictures.

Went to Sir Robert’s and Lady Jane’s home and load up food for dinner at James home.

Had a great afternoon with Roberts boys and wives and daughter Rebecca. There were 8 grandbairns there: Charlotte and Poppy of Jonathan & Caroline; Benjamin & Ruby of Rebecca; Eleanor, Rory & Issie of James & Sarah; Henry & Charlie of Samuel & Hannah.

Dinner was potluck and delicious.

Allie was having a hard time hearing. \240Turned up her hearing aids and started having vertigo. \240Ve isolated her in the front room away from the noise. \240Then James made room for her to lie down upstairs. \240It seems to refresh her.

At 4 pm the final game for the year for Newcastle was on and was watched with great intensity and gusto!

After the game we all departed with promise to visit again Monday evening for dinner.

Allie and I had ridden with Robert and Jane. \240After we left them we stopped at a Petrol station to air up the front tyres.

Went to Ravello’s restaurant for some Panna Cotta. \240Ended up ordering a meal and Panna Cotta. \240Stuffed.

We checked out of Burnhopeside Hall today. \240Breakfast was with Julia Hills and Paul Clarkeson. \240It was a wonderful experience again. \240Conversationally they were superb.

Saying goodbye to Christine Harmer-Hewitt was difficult. \240I helped her load my 79 songs on her computer.

We left at 10:45 headed to Keswick.

We stopped several times to take landscape pictures. \240Stunning scenery as we cross the Northumberland moors to the Yorkshire moors. \240

Had a brief light lunch at a rest stop and travelled on to Ambleside at the north end of Lake Windermere. \240We arrived 10 minutes before Robert and Jane. \240We paid 17.5 each for the privilege to sit in a large cruising party boat to go to Bowles and back in 3 hours. \240Again wonderful scenery.

Visit with Kathy, Frank, Janey, Alec, and Keara

I started the day just perfectly. \240We were leaving the hotel when Allie wanted me to cross the street and get her some water. \240I crossed traffic in the Nissan and since there were no pumps available on the near side I parked at the farthest pump for a fill up. \240While I pumped Allie went inside for water.

When I started filling the hose would keep shutting off after 2 seconds. \240After a liter had been entered into the tank I stopped and realized I was not pumping petrol. \240I wasn’t sure what I had pumped.

Diesel Detergent

Briar Court Hotel in background across the street

I went inside the station and asked an attendant what Ad Blue is and would it harm the engine if I started the car. \240He had an alarmed look on his face, and said, “Don’t start it.”

Allie was in line to pay for her water. \240As I told her what I had done I turned to the man behind me and said, “I bet this man knows what to do?” \240He did.

He took me out to his van and started calling mechanic friends. \240After 30 minutes I called Enterprise and they sent an AA truck to retrieve the car.

I called the Sengewitz’s and told them we were detained. \240We should have been at Shibden Park at 12 noon. \240It was now 12. \240Frank was very kind and said he would come and get us.

The AA mechanic arrived at 12:30 and towed us to the Enterprise location. He waited till he found out we would have to go to Leeds tomorrow to get a replacement automatic transmission rental. \240He, Stephen Fletcher drove us back to the hotel, \240which was very kind of him.

The happy Stephen Fletcher

Weird contraption that really did the job….

A sample of good ol’ Yorkshire Yammer. \240The AA mechanic Stephen Fletcher driving us to our Hotel after dropping off the “damaged” car.

Frank & Kathy picked us up at 2:30 and drove us to Shibden Park where we met with Janey & Keara &

We ate a little of this and that that they had brought and then we traveled to Keara’s home where we spent the evening regaling and telling stories. Keara sat at the piano and played hymns and we sang quite a number one after the other. \240Here is one:

At breakfast we met Carlton & Sylvia Mulling who were up from London for a wedding. \240After breakfast we visited at length about various subjects, especially retirement and financial investing. \240They asked many questions and asked for information about our investment firm.

At Halifax Ward we met so many from before:

Karen Kagii Davis & Me

Andrew & Jane Baldwin; Linda Owens; Brother Sweeney; Martyn Baldwin

Martyn Baldwin & Me

Martyn Baldwin took a picture of Frank Sengewitz & me with Robert Jackson. \240Robert is 90 and has been expected to die so many times that Martyn now calls him “Lazarus”. \240Robert and his wife Janet were the first persons I met among the members of the church in England.

We were driven by Frank & Kathy to Leeds Airport Enterprise to retrieve a replacement car. Kathy kept passing Cadbury Favourite Misshapens to the front for our consideration. Too many considerations….

We picked up a Toyota hybrid for the rest of the trip. \240We returned the 45 minutes to the hotel. \240Freshen up then headed to Hebden Bridge for dinner at IL Mulino Italian Restaurant to meet all:

Kathy, Janey, ?, ?, Allie, Keara, Richard, Alec

Richard & the adoring Keara Watson

Janey Berry Branson & Alec Berry

Back at hotel Allie had a Bavender Zoom and I worked on a weekly report.

We weren’t sure if we could get to see Ian & Linda Owens. So we walked around Halifax shopping through the morning.

We were able to visit Ian & Linda Owens for about 45 minutes until a nurse came to care for Ian.

Ian was talkative and receptive, but very hard of hearing. \240Linda is the caregiver with assistance from the home health nursing system. \240Ian is basically home bound due to a severe stroke 8 years ago.

Ian & LindaS

Still Fetching ‘eck

Linda’s sitting room

Though small, their home is neat, homey, well maintained and warmed with their generous personalities. \240Linda & Ian have done some wonderful work maintaining their home. \240The odd thing is that across the street and down the avenue most homes are in disrepair, unkempt and in some cases in need of demolition.

We went to La Luna for dinner. Our server was the very gracious Flo from Romania.

That’s it for today.

After breakfast we spent and hour packing up. \240We were concerned we had too much weight….but, we are 18 #s under with all 3 cases.

Took a short walk down Halifax Road. \240We are amazed at how decrepit every city in West Yorkshire has become. \240We took pictures of a small forested area off the road. \240Extremely dense undergrowth.

Impossible to walk amongst the vines and undergrowth

Ivy everywhere

It is a jungle

Somewhat beautiful, however, in the middle of the city

St. Philip the Apostle Parish Church, slowly dying and in want of repair

Many of the churches have gone to ruin because the exterior was not cared for. \240Once the roof goes….

.

Went to 16 Carr Green Drive to see the Millers. \240Was concerned that they were not too eager to see us. \240We were warmly welcomed. \240Jane and Andrew Baldwin were there as well. \240So good to see them. \240Shortly after we arrived Philip and Adele arrived. \240They stayed about 20-30 minutes and left to take care of their responsibilities.

We stayed for 3 hours and really had a good visit. We will stop in again Thursday after noon for another visit before going home.

David was 80 on May 8th

We went to Da Sandro’s for dinner. \240Really filled up. \240Very good food. However, I am ready for realistic and reality food again. \240Happy to be going home Friday…

Happy 47th Birthday Ted!!

We traveled to Haworth today, the land of the Brontë’s. \240This is a beautiful drive. \240A lot of open roads and old villages, church’s, stone walls, etc.

….our car parked in front of the old digs….

After breakfast we studied for awhile. Then headed to Castle Hill for one last look at the country surrounding Huddersfield:

The Victoria Tower -1897

The Victoria Tower is 106’ in height. There are 138 steps to the top where an amazing 360 degree view of the surrounding country is unobstructed. \240It sits atop Castle Hill. \240The hill rises above the city of Huddersfield over 700’.

At the dedication of the Tower in July 1899 there 20,000 people in attendance. \240All attendees were dressed in their best clothes and walked or rode in wagons to the hillltop. \240Quite amazing for the time.

Steeped in history, human activity on Castle Hill goes back 4,000 years. Originally an Iron Age hillfort surrounded by defensive ditches and ramparts, it was later a medieval castle and the site of a medieval village.

Afterwards we headed to Halifax for an organ recital at the Halifax Minister: \240 \240 \240https://halifaxminster.org.uk/

Leaving the recital we visited with Linda Owens again. \240We spent an hour and a half with her. \240She is vibrant and has a wonderful exuberance for life. She fed us strawberry scones and chocolate cupcakes. \240Delicious.

Leaving Linda we went to the Millers. \240David & Jackie were there as well as Jane & Andrew Baldwin. \240We visited for right at 4 hours. \240Jackie demanded we stay for tea with them and provided excellent Fish & Chips with mushy peas and curry sauce. Excellent.

Spent the evening just remembering and reminiscing. \240Was an emotional goodby.

Tomorrow is prepared and we will go hoping all is well at home.

Mash 31, 2024

We leave this morning at 7 am from the Briar Court Hotel we have enjoyed the stay and the reunions we have had.

We left the hotel at 7:15 am and arrived at the Manchester Airport at 8:00 am. \240Thirty minutes after turning in our car the bus transport to the airport departed with a fully loaded bus.

Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport is big. \240The bus dropped us at the very southern end of the terminal. \240We had to walk over a quarter of a mile to baggage check, then walk back and enter security. \240We were with the Manchester City Junior Football Club. \240I asked the coach about the game Sunday when Manchester United beat Manchester City. \240He said, “I’m not bothered.”

We had an long walk through the entry to the gates. \240Every kind of perfumery, liquid sales all duty free, sweets, biscuits and electronics. \240It was a winding mall. \240After 30 minutes we got to the waiting area. \240If it is not 30 minutes from boarding time you cannot enter the gates area.

We boarded and after a 10 minute delay we were airborne at 11:55 am. \240It was an 8 hr 22 min flight to Atlanta.

We bought business class tickets coming to England and Premier tickets for the return. \240Premier on Virgin Atlantic is Business Class. \240The additional cost for wi-fi for the entire flight was $23.00!!!
