We did it! We managed to make it to D-Day without the kids knowing anything at all! We started out this morning around 7:30 am with two groggy and confused kids. I made up envelopes with clues about our destination that would be opened on each hour of the trip.

Cillian solved #3 (Ohio) and then immediately figured out the next two (Cleveland and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) because “why else would we go to Ohio?” 😂

So far it’s a gorgeous day for travel. Light turnpike traffic and sunny skies.

Stopped at Burgatory in Cranberry for lunch! I had one of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever had. The waitress was trying to suggest beer. The one she suggested first - Sly Fox Alex’s Lemon Wheat 😂

Back on the road after lunch, with another uneventful leg of the drive. We arrived in Cleveland around 4:15 pm. We’re staying in Lakewood, about 15 minutes from downtown. The apartment is cute, albeit decorated by some beer “dudes.” It’s all miscellaneous beer decor - a bearded craft brewer’s dream!

After hanging at the apartment a bit, we headed to dinner at Good Company in the Detroit-Shoreway area. It’s a cool little spot with great, simple sandwiches. I indulged with a fried bologna cheesesteak! The restaurant is really close to the lake coast and the weather was gorgeous so we went exploring after dinner and found the beach.

There are two highways that stand between the neighborhood and the beach, so they built a byway that includes tunnels and bridges to make it accessible. It is really cool to see a “city” beach when you come out of the tunnel.

The place was hopping even at 8 pm. There was a full bar and food area and people were just soaking up the end of the weekend.

Figuring we have a long day ahead of us, we decided to keep it low key and watch a movie when we got back. We picked Jailhouse Rock since we are about to get our rock history on. Cillian liked it, but is decidedly slower than he’s used to. Fionnuala fell asleep sitting up.

Day 1 is complete.

Today was the reason for the season. We headed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame right when they opened and I’m sure glad we did. It took us almost 6 hours to really take it all in, and we didn’t get out of there until after 4:30.

We headed back to the house for a break before heading back out to dinner. We decided on Great Lakes Brewing. It was absolutely beautiful weather, so we enjoyed the patio.

After dinner we wandered around and found Mitchell’s Ice Cream. It was incredible! They make all of the ice cream in house and you can watch the whole production through huge windows. Really cool spot!

We were all beat after this, so we headed home for movies on the couch.

We slept in a bit today and opted for a slow breakfast at the Coffee Pot, a local diner just around the corner.

After this, we stopped in at STEM, a handmade soap shop. It is amazing and the owner was super cool. I highly recommend their stuff.

Next stop - A Christmas Story House! This was by far my favorite part of the trip! We had an awesome tour guide and they let you run wild in the house, posing for all of your re-enactment pics! We did some serious damage in the gift shop too!

We worked up an appetite there so we headed across the street to the Rowley Inn for a break. This bar has been there over a hundred years and served as the craft services of sorts for the cast and crew of the movie. It was delicious and super cool.

Next stop was the Steamship Mather. Pretty cool for an old boat.

Our plan was to hit a record store after, but he was closed for the holiday week. We opted for a break from sightseeing and the heat and hit up Platform Brewing.

Last stop of the day was at Moe’s Tavern! A writer from the Simpson’s used to live upstairs and named the show’s beloved barkeep after this place. It doesn’t look anything like the tv bar, but the spirit was there!
