NYC to Cartagena

We left to JFK at 1:30am. The kids were surprisingly awake and not cranky. Nicole and I on the other hand were already tired.

Here’s a snap of us in our cab to the airport from Queens Casa.

Me and Keeks

Kassia loves to ride in the back

The plane ride was short. 5 hours and nobody slept in except Nicole. Kassi read the whole time and Kira listened to podcasts.

Kira loves storytime

We arrived at around 10am, and it was suuuuper hot and humid. We took a cab to the air bnb in the middle of old town and grabbed some food and then jumped into the pool.

So hot

We will now go to the supermarket and get some food for later!

We walked over to a nearby restaurant to have some steaks.

Walking in Cartagena

The food was yummy but kira was too tired and took a nap at the booth.

Kira asleep

While I did bedtime with Kira, Nicole and Kassi went out for some ice cream while listening to a live band in the plaza.

More ice cream

Casa Ohana Playa

Beach arrival

We hit up a beach in Cartagena. We took a 20 min cab ride. We found this place through Jaime our cab driver that we made friends with. He knows th owner and said they made great food and the beach would be more empty than other places on the weekend.

The kids went right in and we ordered some pina coladas (no alcohol) to cool down. We also made a new friend Chela that is 9 years old and went to the water with Kassi and Kira. Hopefully they will practice more of their Spanish.

Kira always with her goggles

For lunch we ordered some fried fish. First Nicole and Kassia chose the fish they wanted. Nicole went with a red snapper and they forgot what the other two were - we went with top three. They were delicious!

Fried fish with rice and salad

We spent most of the time in the water which was warm!!!! A little too warm for my taste but the girls loved the waves.

We left the beach around 5pm and headed back to the hotel. Maybe we will try and catch the game later today.

Game time

We found a spot to watch the final between Colombia and Argentina! It’s crazy out here. Good thing for Nicole’s Spanish skills we found a small seafood restaurant with a tv that had a free table for four.

So with our jerseys we are ready to watch! Go Colombia!!!!!!

Was so sad when Argentina scored.

Lounging

After a late night we spent the day by the pool relaxing.

For lunch we got some arepas at a local spot.

Then we went to a group cooking class at a nearby restaurant where made coconut rice, empanadas, tostones, aqua panella, and red snapper fish.

San Basilio de Palenque

Palenge

We took a 1 hour ride via bus to Palenque - the first free city founded by formerly enslaved peoples in Colombia.

We met at El Centro and jumped on the bus.

We arrived and got to learn more about the history of Palenge (no q in the native language).

We walked through the center plaza to visit a musician that is well known and got to play some music.

Here we entered the musician studio.the group Kombilesa Mi played one of their songs and we got to jam a bit.

Afterwards we had lunch at someone’s house, a friend of the tour guide that made us some fish and coconut rice.

After lunch we went to meet a local boxer that runs a school. Pallenque had a world champion in 1972 that went on to help the place get some running water and electricity from the government.

Last we got to see and dance with a local dance school.

Once back at the Airbnb we went up to the roof to use the hot tub.

And we ended the night with dinner at Valentina restaurant in El Centro.

With a final stroll in town with ice cream.

Hotel Las AmΓ©ricas

Las Americas

We left our airbnb in Cartagena today and moved about 15 min to a resort.

I caught some kind of bug so I was out of it for a bit and stayed in the hotel room while everyone went out to explore. As I was in the room I saw a quick thunderstorm pass through.

By the 3pm I felt better and hit the pool and hot tub.

We left around 7pm to watch the sunset from our room balcony.

Then we went out to dinner.

Barranquilla

Today we drove from Cartagena to Barranquilla. It was about a 2 hour drive.

We’re staying one night at a hotel and then driving to Santa Marta.

Travel to Minca

We left on Monday afternoon to the Hive - a 2.5 hour drive from Barranquilla. The drive was super easy through some interesting landscapes. We stopped on the road at a random place to eat. While we ordered some fried fish we checked out their playground.

We got back on the road and finally arrived at the Hive and got comfortable in our new room. We immediately jumped in the pool for a bit and then joined for dinner.

Mamo

We had a visit from local tribe to guide through a spiritual offering to nature. We drank some coca tea and learned about how the tribe thinks about nature and impending climate change.
