Ellen Ruth/Heron Now is in her slip, and I can’t wait to go sailing. But it’s 31 degrees out and that’s just tooo cold for me.
Not a bad ending to our first overnight cruise. \240We left about 11:30am, motored all the way with just the jib. Fred and Ricky were enjoying themselves. Lucy was only slightly whiny until she came up top. We made anchor just east of the 331 bridge just in time for the sunset. We had a dolphin join us at anchor. And the color of the sky was stunning!
These are marriage savers! \240😝
Lucy finally found HER spot in the boat!
Matt made a new friend.
Hello Fred!
The whole family.
Sunset on River Camps, Panama City, FL
Carrie and Matt join us for sundowners. \240
Heron Now at night. Gorgeous.
River Camps pier.
Day 2 of our shake down cruise. Foggy morning, glassy water, no wind. Motored through the ditch to Panama City to join up with family. Sundowners and dinner at Boondocks rounded out the day. \240Thanks to Carrie and Matt for the stunning pictures of Heron Now and night time silhouette.
DAY ONE (Saturday)
Shake Down Cruise (The REAL one) 😎
We spent all day…well all week loading the boat down. \240Many times we thought we couldn’t fit another thing on board. \240But amazingly enough, there is plenty of room. \240We still need to do some organizing. \240Jim made some shelves for the spare head, but it has not been organized effectively…yet. \240I am sure that it will prove to be a good move on our part. \240The bird cabin has beach and kiting gear that fits nicely behind the cages. \240I believe that a nice little curtain will spruce that area up as well.
All the canned and dried goods as well as the first aid kit have stowed behind the salon berth. \240And I was able to use some spare bench seating foam from my cockpit cushion project to pad between containers so we won’t hear knocking while under way. \240At least that is the hope!
Food Prep…chicken curry!
dry goods and first aid
Bird Cabin and beach gear
The start of my vanity
Jim’s vanity
Freezer empty
Fridge empty
My one and only cabinet for pots and pans.
My ONLY drawer for cooking utensils
A handy hole for quick grab dry stuff
Lots of little odd sized cabinets for spices and things like that.
After all the provisioning and loading and planning and waiting…(for the AIS)…we were underway at approx. 3:05PM.
The day was chilly and cloudy. \240We had some rain, but the the zipper extensions were doing their job keeping the cockpit nice and warm.
Lucy and the birds joined us up top briefly…but since it was getting dark, Jim put the birds to bed at dark. \240Lucy spent most of her time on my lap. \240She really doesn’t like it when we run the engine. \240Still getting queasy but dealing with it in her own way. \240
We continued on until we arrived at Alaqua Bayou. \240The weather held and we only had a little misty rain. \240The winds kicked up a bit, but the boat handle it very well. \240We finally \240anchored out \240around 8:00pm on the north east side of Choctawhatchee Bay outside of Alaqua Bayou . \240It was a Long day but happy to be out on the water.
Jim tried out the new anchor bridle and it seemed to be doing the trick nicely.
We had a nice dinner of turkey tacos and we were both ready for bed.
We decided to run the space heater Jim’s son Mike gave us to keep the birds warm but it drained the battery and we woke up at 5:30am to get the generator going. \240Lesson learned. \240Continued on the next page….
Heron Now…on it’s way!
Day 2 (Sunday)
Left anchorage at 8am.
Traversed through the “ditch”. \240It took about 4.5 hours.
Winds 12-18 knots on the bay…much calmer in the ditch.
Temperature 57 degrees.
We arrived just inside of West Bay at 2:30pm and anchored outside Crooked Creek.
Ate some lunch then got the dinghy ready to head to Matt’s for dinner. \240Jim forgot the key to the dingy lock so he had to cut the cable to the lock. \240This was a bit tricky, but he got the job done. \240:)
It was pretty damp and cold on the way up and back to Matt’s. \240We had a wonderful dinner that Carrie made. \240Greek food! \240Yum.
After some visiting, we headed back to the dinghy and then back to the boat. \240All of us were pretty tired and went straight to bed. \240The birds and cat did well while we were gone and were also ready to tuck in.
Huddled up in the dinghy…brrr!
Beautiful picture of us driving off in the dinghy…courtesy of Carrie.
Day 3 (Monday)
Woke up to a very cold cabin at 6am. \240All aboard were awake and ready to slowly come alive for a long day of sailing.
We had a nice hot breakfast and shoved off at approx. 9am.
Mike is with us now and will join us on our way to Tampa Bay Area.
Temp is a sunny 48 degrees. \240Winds light at 8kts/gusts at 15kts. \240A very pretty day.
Jim’s buddies…they follow him everywhere!
Fred and Mike
Ricky is learning to navigate…. \240We are in trouble!
The birds Joining us for breakfast
Hot breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage and sourdough toast.
After Breakfast I did some cleanup and organizing. \240This was good, because little did I know it would be such a rough day out in the gulf.
The stern berth. This is where Jim and I sleep.
A somewhat organized closet in our spare head.
We were joined on our journey by a few Christmas gnomes.
We left St. Andrew’s pass at about 12:30pm. \240The winds and waves were much higher than anticipated. \240We decided it would be good to reef in sooner than later. \240Jim reefed in to the 2nd reef and we rolled up the jib and let out the stay sail.
This evening it was rough sailing. \240Wind about 20-25 kts. Swells 8-10 all day and night. \240They continued into Tuesday.
We did see dolphin surfing our bow, stern and waves around the boat. \240The sunset was stunning.
Dolphin joining us for some fun
Birds handling it very well. \240Me and Lucy were a bit seasick and after taking some Dramamine, my stomach calmed down. \240The only time it affected me was when went down below. \240SO, Lucy and I tried to stay topside as much as possible until the meds kicked in.
Ricky enjoying the day. \240Loves to play! \240Mike at the helm.
St. Andrew’s pass, Panama City, FL
Lucy is not happy…she does feel better in her thunder vet though.
Lucy and I hanging out topside. \240Trying to fight the queasiness.
Feeling better now.
Lunch was turkey sandwiches and banana. \240 Dinner was more of the same.
Jim and Mike drove all of the first day and night because I was still not up to snuff and Lucy was scared and not doing well. \240I holed up with her and tried to sleep but I never really got any sleep because it was so rough down below. \240
Day 4 (Tuesday)
The winds continued about the same as yesterday. \240About 2am the dinghy bracing bolt popped off and Jim had to wake up to secure it. \240No one got much sleep…if any.
Breakfast was at first light Belvita crackers and a banana. \240It was too rough to make hot coffee so I made cold coffee. \240I say that is better than NO coffee.
We kept the birds in their cages all morning due to the windy conditions and the roll of the boat. \240We did bring them out at about 3:30pm for some fresh air. \240They went to bed at sunset.
Lucy still not doing well. \240She snuggled with me all day and night. \240She started to emit this really bad smell and my guess is it had to be some sort of musk that has to do with stress.
Mary made heated up some premade Chicken curry for dinner. \240We found that the microwave would stop during heating and we ending put resorting to heating it up the old fashioned way….on the stove. \240A nice hot meal before a long night of sailing. \240Jim started a helm shift schedule at 8:00pm.
Jim 8-10pm
Mike 10pm-12am
Weather clear. \240Beautiful starry night. \240Seas still 8-10ft. \240Clocking approx. 16 kt winds. \240Temp 48 degrees.
No events recorded during this time.
Day 5 (Wednesday)
Mary \240helm shift 12am-2am
Mike on watch. \240Saw one boat in the distance. \240Pointed toward the channel entrance (Egmont channel) to Tampa Bay \240Nothing to report.
Jim 2-4am
During this shift, Jim noticed that the dinghy engine was about to go. \240He got in the dinghy (no life vest!!!) and placed it on the floor of the dinghy so we would not lose it.
Dinghy and damaged life sling
Mike 4-6am
No report. \240Still heading toward Egmont channel.
6-8am we shifted around. \240Beautiful sunrise.
No report
8am Breakfast of protein bars and hot coffee.
Around 12:00pm Jim went up front to adjust the sail so we could maintain a better easterly direction.
While he was out he adjusted the anchor bridal that was making noise. \240He also hauled in one of the fenders that was hanging overboard.
The birds stayed in their cages most of the day. We brought them out around 3:30pm. \240They spent the day with us and then went to bed at sunset.
It was a gorgeous sunny day. \240Lighter winds but still some pretty rocky waves.
We approached the Egmont pass and made it into Tampa bay about noon. \240 Mary made lunch or taco salads. \240Our first “real” meal since leaving P’ma City.
Finishing lunch
Approaching the Sunshine Skyway bridge.
Ricky at the helm. \240
At 3:30pm We found a place to dock the boat at Little Harbor Marina in Ruskin, FL. \240A nice sheltered place to stay. \240They have showers, ice, power, fuel, pump out. \240Not laundry service.
After we secured the boat, We showered and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. \240Drinks of course. \240A nice sundowner for \240Heron Now and Mary’s \240first gulf passage.
We walked to Dinner. \240Ate at a nice little restaurant, the Sunset Grill. \240Food was Very good. \240 Then walked back and hit the hay. \240We were all super tired.
Day 6 (Thursday)
Today we went to Riverview and picked up a rental car, and then drove Mike into downtown Tampa to get his rental.
Afterward, we had a really nice breakfast at the Apollo diner. Food was really great. Coffee was hot and it looks like a real Locals favorite.
Then we went to the marina office and registered the boat for the week. I collected all the laundry and loaded it into the rental vehicle and headed to Mallorie’s. Jim stayed and did some work on the boat.
I took Emma to the strawberry market and got a few fun food items. Then I went into Apollo Beach and watched the boys do gymnastics.
After I got back to the boat, we had dinner at The Lazy Gator. The food was OK, but the smoky bar was not OK.
After dinner we both read a bit and then decided on an early bedtime.
Tomorrow’s plan is to start on the boat repairs.
Day 6 (Friday)
Today was errands and chores. \240Lucy is not doing well. \240She is peeing about every 5 mins. \240I think she has a UTI.
I took Lucy for a walk on her new “escape” proof leash. \240She did really well even though I know she is not feeling well.
Jim and I had breakfast and then went to West Marine and Walmart to get things for repairs and improvements.
Later I took Lucy to the vet and started her on some antibiotics. \240Jim stayed with the birds and the boat and did some chores and repairs. \240He got the antenna (we have not idea what it does) next to the dinghy off and repaired it with some JB Weld. \240Then took off the mounting hardware to the life sling. \240Took off the bolts on the crossbar to the Davits.
After the vet I picked up Jim and we went to Mallorie’s and she fed us. \240Thankfully. Then Dan took us to look at Christmas lights….on the golf cart with Mallorie and the boys.
Back on the boat…we were beat and went straight to bed.
Day 7 (Saturday)
Woke around 7:00…fed the kids and We had the rest of the stollen with sausage for breakfast.
Jim drove to St. Pete to get the mounting hardware for the life sling. \240On the way back he got the rest of our stuff we needed from Home Depot. Jim said it was the biggest West Marine he has ever been to.
While Jim was gone, Mary tore the place apart and reorganized the bird area. \240While she was at it she cleaned and vacuumed the whole interior of the boat from top to bottom.
Lunch was soup and salad.
I went to Mass at St. Ann Catholic Church in Ruskin. They have a 4:30pm vigil. \240I decided I would go to mass on Saturday and then Christmas morning with the family. \240This is one of those weird times in the church calendar year when Christmas Eve and the 4th Sunday of Advent fall on a weekend.
After Mass, we went back to Mallorie’s and joined them for a block party. \240Met a few of the neighbors…watched a car get towed…exciting stuff!! \240:)
Back home and in bed at approx. 10:00pm.
Day 8 (Sunday)
4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve.
Marina life is starting to take on a bit of a routine.
Up early, feed Lucy and birds. \240Birds stay in their cages for a bit while I make coffee.
While coffee is brewing I gather my vitamins and meds for the morning, brush my teeth and wait for Jim to get up.
While he is busy in the head, I make the bed and pour coffee. \240We relax a bit, then eat breakfast.
I attempted French toast with the older bread I saved in the frig. \240First batch was a bit of a soggy mess! \240Too much milk. \240The 2nd batch was very good. \240All in all a good attempt for learning how to navigate the galley.
I left Jim to do the dishes and Lucy and I went for our daily walk. \240Well, I walk and carry her, find a spot she likes and then she sits and watches. \240What she is watching I had no idea!
Weather is warm and a bit sticky. \240Things are pretty busy here in the morning. \240Lots of people hitting the water. \240I saw a family in matching pajamas heading to their boat. \240My guess is they were getting a cool boat family Christmas picture.
While Lucy sits, I get in my rosary, pay bills, read emails, make some phone calls. \240It’s at least productive. lol. Must be nice to be a cat. \240Carried and plopped! \240I will say she is doing much better. \240The meds are working and she is back to her old sweet self.
Snowy Egret
I’m not sure what he is yet.
Jim worked on the dinghy davits which we ended up needing longer screws to get the hardware attached.
I puttered around the boat straightening and stashing things. \240One thing I really need to do is inventory where everything is once we settle where things are going to go.
We spent the morning on the boat and then when it was time we drove to Lowe’s in Riverview on the way to Mallorie’s house for Christmas Eve festivities.
Kari met us at the door. \240She is Mallorie’s stepmom. \240This would be my first time meeting her.
(Backstory)
Kari is married to Mark Johnson. \240He is Mallorie’s biological father.
Lunch a was a lovely Greek gyro salad.
After lunch, Jim was tasked with helping Dan, Mark and a neighbor put together the trampoline for the boys big gift.
While they were doing that, Mallorie and occasionally Emma sat at the piano and sang Broadway songs. \240It felt really nice to sit and play.
When the guys finished the “project”, they joined us for Christmas Carols. \240 Dinner was chili.
The boys opened one gift and then went to bed. \240We drove back to the boat and the kids. \240Showered and then Tucked ourselves into bed for an early morning the next day.
It was a nice day.
Day 9 (Monday)
Christmas Day. \240Up at 6am. \240Fed animals, got dressed and headed out the Mallorie’s for the present fest!
We were greeted with fresh coffee and breakfast of sausage and biscuits. \240(I am going to have to go on a no carb diet after this weekend!)
As we traditionally do, presents were opened on taking turns rotation starting with the youngest and ending with the oldest. \240Each opening one gift per rotation until all the gifts are opened. \240This was the first year that the boys could read who gave them each gift.
My gifts:
From Jim:-Floating water proof phone case/Waterproof camera case for IPhone/DIAMOND EARRINGS :*
Mallorie and Family: Watch band/game/pink bag/gaming pillow
From Meg & Frank: \240Card game in a case/ coffee
After all the gifts were opened I helped Emma start the sourdough bread. \240Then we all got ready for Mass. \240The boys really did not want to go. \240(This made me sad). But once we got there, Hudson had a million questions! \240😂
Mass was at St. Stephen in Riverview. \240And as much as I like the church, I just want to put some pep in the music. \240The organist plays sooooo slow. \240😳
Lunch was Chicken Curry on the boat.
We spent the rest of the afternoon at the boat with the kids since we had left them so early that morning. \240They enjoyed the day in the cockpit. \240Jim worked on securing the life sling and I started a new crochet project and watched a Christmas movie.
I took Lucy for a walk later in the afternoon before the sun went down. \240Then we went back to Mallorie’s for dinner and games. \240Dinner was Chicken and Dumplings. \240(More carbs!)
We played a game called the SOUND GAME. \240It was not well received. \240While all this was going on, I fluffed laundry, gathered our presents and other stuff and prepared the sourdough for it’s final rise.
We baked the bread and when it was done we headed back to the boat and bed.
Long day but a nice day.
Day 10 (Tuesday)
Day AFTER Christmas.
Up early, same routine. Coffee, Breakfast, projects.
Today’s project…if the weather is good is to paint the dinghy letters. (This did not happen). It was a bit overcast so I cleaned up the boat and ran some errands.
Things are getting a bit more orderly around here!
The nav desk still needs some work.
I had to return Amazon items and found the drop off just down the road on College avenue (?). \240There is a UPS drop off for amazon purchases. \240This was easy. \240Going to Walmart was not! \240It took me an hour and a half just to get a few items. \240Ugh.
I also drove over to see the boys one more time before we left Tampa. \240Dan was doing yard work and taking down Christmas decorations. \240Mallorie and Emma were at a movie and the boys were just playing. \240It was a quick little visit and then back to the boat.
Rainbow Scarab Beetle
Mark and Kari headed back to Opp, AL and made it home safely.
While sitting at Mal’s I made some calls to check on our next marina options. \240Most marinas are pretty booked up this time of year. \240So we are talking about our next destination. \240We have to leave the Marina tomorrow so we are preparing for that. \240More on this later….
We both needed a shower and mine unfortunately was a cold one! \240Dinner tonight was at the Sunset Grill. \240I had the seafood bisque and a salad. \240I really needed some veggies after such a carb heavy week. \240The soup was so thick that I just got it to go. \240I will add some milk to it later and have it for lunch.
We stayed up and watched the movie THE SOUND OF FREEDOM. \240Really good movie…just very sad. \240We got to bed late tonight for the first time since we got here. \240A good day.
Day 11 (Wednesday)
Another workday.
Jim worked on putting safety lights on the dinghy and organizing tool and tool part boxes. \240Also organizing safety equipment locker.
I worked on making banana bread and using the galley oven for the first time. \240I delivered some nice hot muffins to the marina office. \240I also repaired the paint on the dinghy name. \240It had been rubbed off during our Gulf crossing.
Making Banana Bread
Used the oven for the first time!
Muffins for the marina office.
Poor little dinghy
All fixed!
I paid a short visit to Mallorie one more time and we went for a short walk.
Alligator
Bunny Rabbit
Pacific Reef Heron/ Eastern Reef Egret
Dinner was chicken enchilada casserole and salad. \240We watched a bit of TV and went to bed.
Day 12 (Thursday)
Up early. \240Breakfast was banana bread. (Of course!)
We drove to the rental car place to return our vehicle and caught and UBER home.
I updated the navionics and Active Captain (Aqua Map) on the helm and on my app. \240I plotted our next course to Davis Island Yacht club. \240Side note: \240I found that the automatic course setter in Navionics is pretty much shit. \240Learning this, I will manually set all courses next time!
We settled up with Little Harbor, got some fuel (33.3gallons) and departed for Davis Island at 1:26pm.
The day was clear (barometric pressure 29.92). \240We motored the whole way because it was glassy and calm. \240The animals handled the trip well.
Lucy found a new place to hide.
Lunch was PBJ sandwiches.
We arrived a Davis Island Yacht Club at 4:45pm and tied up to the west T dock at 5:35pm.
We ate dinner at the bar because there was a party going on at the table area. \240Food was ok. \240Pub fair. \240Jim’s sweet potato fries looked barely cooked. \240My coleslaw was warm and lacked flavor. \240But the burger was good.
Eating at the bar
We watched a bit of TV and went to bed about 10:00pm.
Day 13 (Friday)
I woke up early with a migraine. \240Nursed it a bit while Jim slept but I had to go back to bed. \240It was getting worse. \240I took one tablet of Imotrex and later some Zopfran. \240I eventually needed to vomit and take a shot. \240I slept until 11:15am. \240Felt much better, just a but shaky. \240I HATE spending my day like this! \240I think it was the warm coleslaw. \240😒
After breakfast I cleaned up the cabin and kitchen. \240Vacuumed and straightened up for the day. \240Jim and I went for a nice 3 mile walk around the basin. \240Lots of planes coming and going since it is surrounded by an airport.
The day was clear and about 58 degrees. \240A bit windy, but very pleasant. \240We both really needed to get out and move a bit.
Heading out for a walk to stretch the legs!
We went to the club to watch a beautiful sunset and that just didn’t happen. \240So, instead we had a delicious bowl of clam chowder, a few drinks and did some research on our next destination.
Back on the boat, Dinner was Chicken enchilada casserole and salad.
Watched TV and called it a night. \240We are planning to leave out tomorrow for Boca Ciega Bay and try living on the hook for a few days. \240Should be fun!
Day 14 (Saturday)
Got up early, fixed a nice hot breakfast of sourdough pancakes, scrambled eggs and conucah sausage. \240Then we both got showers up at the club.
Shoved off at 10:45am. \240Weather partly cloudy, 59degrees. \240Winds 3 knots out ENE. \240Barometric pressure 30.17.
Unfurled the jib at 11:45am. \240
We stopped to peek in at the Tampa YC and Country Club but it was a tight squeeze to get in so we turned around and kept going on our way.
At approximately 1:30pm we had some big ship excitement, but other that, the day was uneventful.
Fred is sporting a new doo! \240He’s got bangs. \240🤣
We arrived at our anchorage and settled in at 4:59pm. \240No real sunset tonight….maybe tomorrow. \240Temperature is a chilly 60 degrees. \240Dinner tonight is chili or chicken tortilla soup and crackers. \240Not sure which one I pulled out to thaw. \240Either one will feel nice tonight to ward off the chill.
Day 15 (Sunday)
Woke up somewhat early. \240Fixed banana bread and yogurt for breakfast. \240Sat and watched mass on YouTube. \240I found a different church because my favorite priest, Fr Mike was not on at the time I wanted to watch.
Fred impatient to eat
Weather today was beautiful and clear as you can see from the pictures. \24056 degrees/barimetric pressure 30.28.
After Mass we tidied up the cabin and galley and got the dinghy ready to go out to the beach. \240We had some trouble with the connections from the battery to the motor. \240We suspect it got some salt water in it from the Gulf crossing. \240Jim sprayed some WD40 on it and soon we had it running like a champ.
We were able to get over to the dock, but it was not easy finding a spot to tie up to. \240We found an old dilapidated boat that was just sitting there and tied up to it, climbed aboard and headed to town.
We found the PUBLIX, but decided to just walk about a bit to see what we could see. \240We talked to the bike rental agent and he suggested a great place on the beach for a good burger. \240So we walked to the beach and then down the road to lunch. \240The place was called SANDBAR BILLS…tucked away in back of the Bon-Aire Motel. \240Cute little place. \240Obviously family friendly. \240Two heated pools!
After lunch we went to PUBLIX to pick up some provisions. \240$5.35 for a roll of Bounty paper towels! \240Yikes. \240Definitely beach front prices! \240Grapes were $9. \240Gonna have to cut back on this extravagant eating….or starve. \240😳
We loaded up to dinghy and drove back to the boat. \240After unloading, we got back on the dinghy and I got a chance to drive her for the first time. \240It was lots of fun! \240We headed over to the cat that “next” to us in the cove and turned out the guy was stuck in the shallows there. \240He had tried to get into the cove to go to PUBLIX, but got stuck on the sandbar. \240The name of his boat was ARIEL! \240I can’t remember his name, but he was from Tampa.
After talking to him, we decided to do some more exploring and drove the dinghy around the little island. \240We caught the motor in the sand under this low bridge, but were able to row ourselves out. \240Lots of grassy areas in this little cove and lots of shallows.
Finally out of the grass, we were able to get back to the boat and get her back on the davits.
The rest of the day was just relaxing…reading…crocheting…and trying the figure out where we will go tomorrow.
Dinner is tortellini and spaghetti sauce with a nice salad. \240I wanted to have a nice, fancy meal for New Year’s Eve. \240
More good things to come in the New Year. \240Stay tuned!
Day 16 (Monday)
Feast of the Solemnity of Mary the mother of God. \240It is the 8th day of Christmas. \240It is also the Catholic feast day marking Jesus’ circumcision. \240They don’t call it that anymore. \240Just a bit of trivia today. \240😊 \240And what a blessed morning it is! \240Beautiful sunrise, pleasant temperatures (64 degrees). Mild winds…if any at all. \240Barimetric pressure is 30.23. \240The same as yesterday. \240It is shaping up to be a very nice day.
Happy 2024!
After breakfast we are motoring to Dunedin. \240This is a quaint little town that Mallorie told me about. \240We had an uneventful and peaceful motor all the way to the Dunedin Municipal Marina. \240We had intended to dock there for the night but anticipated that we might not find a slip. \240This was the case…they were not open and the dock master was not working today. \240So, we ended up anchoring out with all the other long term sailboats just west of the channel. \240But, in front of the marina.
We went through 3 bascule bridges on our journey north up the ICW.
This is where we anchored out. \240We are basically in the Clearwater area. \240
After we got settled in we dinghied to the marina. \240We walked a bit and looked around the Main Street area. \240First impressions showed a vibrant arts scene and typical upscale tourist fair. \240I did see a stained glassed gallery that caught my attention. \240I will definitely want to go there if they are open. \240We continued to wander until we found a place open for dinner. \240We ended up at the CROWN AND BULL in Dunedin. \240Food was good. \240Jim has a fried chicken and kimchi burger. \240I had crab toast. \240We shared some collard greens and hoppin’ john. \240 \240We also brought some butter pecan ice cream home from a local ice cream parlor.
Crab Toast. \240
Fried Chicken Sam w/ Kimchi and sweet potato fries
After a short dinghy back to the boat, we watched a little TV, ate or ice cream and went to bed. \240Tomorrow we meet up with Mallorie and her family and explore a bit more of what Dunedin has to offer.
Day 17 (Tuesday)
We got moving slower this morning. \240Up early. \240Temp in the 50’s. \240Much chillier than usual. \240Sky is clear and bar/pres is 30.23. \240Same as yesterday. \240Should be a crisp, clear day. \240Perfect for walking around town and exploring
Beautiful sunrise but no pictures. \240It was chilly (57 degrees) on the hook so I made a hot breakfast of oatmeal and fruit. Weather clear and dry. \240A slight chop on the water, but hard to tell if that is from the wind or boat traffic since we are anchoring off the channel. \240Either way, a really nice weather day! ☀️
After some tidying up, (see side note on dealing with pets on a boat) we got ready to meet up with Mallorie, Dan and family in Dunedin. \240We left on the dinghy at 9:30am and tied of at the municipal marina in the same spot as yesterday. \240Tide was low so it was definitely more challenging and a bit humiliating to get out of the dinghy and onto the dock. \240Thank goodness no one was watching!
Mallorie was delayed because on the way to Dunedin, Declan got car sick. \240Poor kid! \240They had to drive to Clearwater target to get a change of clothes. \240That reminded me of all the changes of clothes I had to pack for Mallorie when she was a kid. \240She had the worst stomach and was always getting 🤢. \240Pay back is hell kid!
While we were waiting for them, we found a little coffee house and got some coffee and waited for them to get to town. \240They found us and we were off! \240We walked around a bit and poked our noses into a few shops then settled on eating lunch at one of the many local breweries, the Dunedin Brewery. \240This one just happened to advertise themselves as the oldest brewery in Florida.

10 Fun Facts about Dunedin’s History:
1. In the 1800s, it was discovered that today’s Dunedin was the seasonal home of the Tocobaga Indians, a Safety Harbor culture, who inhabited the area from 900 to 1500 AD.

2. Dunedin is the oldest town in Pinellas County and began as a remote settlement in 1852. Originally named, Jonesboro, two Scottish immigrants renamed the settlement to Dunedin in 1882 (The name comes from the Scottish-Gaelic form of Edinburgh, Scotland, Dùn Èideann).
3. Hogs and farm animals used to roam free, until Dunedin was incorporated in 1899.
4. Caladesi and Honeymoon Island used to be one island, until a hurricane separated the two in the 1921.
5. Cereal King, W.K. Kellogg, became wealthy after making Corn Flakes, and purchased a mansion in 1934 to call Dunedin his winter home. During WWII, the mansion was used as a Marine barrack.
6. Dunedin has always been a tourist destination and recreation area. Adding to Dunedin’s hospitality history, Bon Appétit Restaurant, has been operating on the Dunedin waterfront for over 40 years, under the same owners.

8. Honeymoon Isle, aka Honeymoon Island, received national attention after Clinton M. Washburn, owner of the Island, invited newlyweds to come honeymoon on the island. Newlyweds participated in recreational activities, visited with other couples and stayed in wooden thatched huts built on the beach!
9. Donald Roebling, an American inventor and engineer, is known for inventing the Landing Vehicle Tracked, or Alligator. The LVT could operate in water and on land and was used by both the American and British forces in WWII. Today, one of the last remaining LVTs lives right here in Dunedin – located at the VFW Post 2550 (South on Douglas Avenue towards the Blue Jays Stadium).
10. Fan of the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones? Well, you can thank Dunedin High School for educating David Nutter, the Emmy Award winning director. Nutter graduated from DHS in 1978.
Pretty cool, eh? And these 10 facts only scratch the surface.
After we said our goodbyes, we left \240town and dinghied back to the boat. \240Our next destination is Clearwater Yacht Club and we wanted to make that before it got dark. \240We left the anchorage at about 3:30pm and anchored outside of Clearwater YC at approximately 5:54pm
Surprisingly enough it only took about an hour to motor there. \240When we arrived, someone else was in our space. \240And since the office was closed, Jim dinghied over to the boat in question and found out that this guy was also offered the same slip for the night. \240Being the patient negotiator that he is, Jim found out this person was only there for the night. \240So, we anchored out for the evening and will take the slip tomorrow morning. \240In the meantime, we had a nice dinner and the club and then headed back to the boat for a bit of TV and digestion before bed.
Side note:
TRAVELING WITH PETS ON A BOAT
The biggest issue for having any pet of board is that we can never leave the boat overnight. \240The animals take daily care. \240That limits some of the time we can spend away. \240And if someone does have to leave overnight, one of us always has to stay with the boat. \240The only other solution is to take all the animals with us.
Things that we deal with: (BIRDS)
1. Lots of shit! \240Birds poop when they want and where they want. \240We keep napkins and paper towels in every place they are. \240Plus, if you are not careful, they will poop on you. \240Or, you might put your hand in Someplace they pooped. \240Anyway you look at it…..it ..is …just….GROSS! \240And a constant battle.
2. \240They get excited at any thing and every thing that passes by the boat. So if another bird 🦅 flies by (and there are many) we know about it because Ricky screeches to let us know.
3. \240They like to eat with us. \240And when they eat, they fling and scatter whatever they eat all over the place. \240So the amount of seed and crumbs we sweep up everyday is huge. \240And since I don’t like sitting on crumbs, we swept up all the time. \240
4. \240The cages get poopy too…but not nearly as bad since they are outside most of the time.
5. \240They chew on everything from shirts to pillows and woodwork. \240Watching out for this is constant. \240We do have some toys for them and it helps.
Things that are nice about birds on board:
1. \240They offer great companionship and are fun and enteraining to watch.
2. \240They have great personalities.
3. \240They like to cuddle.
4. \240Other than poop and seeds, they are pretty easy to have as pets and have acclimated to boat life very well. \240We do our best to give them social time with us and keep them on some sort of routine. \240Doing this had made it easy to get them to bed and back in their cages when WE want them to go.
Things that we deal with: (CAT)
1. \240The litter box situation is gross too. \240The only advantage is that her poop and pee is confined to the box. \240We had to get a larger, covered litter box, but still she manages to get some pee on the floor! \240She did pee on our sheets after the gulf crossing, but she was also sick and had a UTI so she was only trying to tell us she was not feeling good. \240Thankfully she is doing better and peeing where she is supposed to be peeing now. \240Regular scooping keeps the smells down. \240Also using a good litter is important.
2. \240Lucy does not like the motor. \240I think it is the noise that bothers her. \240And since we motor a lot she gets stressed each time the motor is on. \240I have tried putting her in a thunder vest, but now she just equates that vest to terrible stuff. \240I have tried giving her this CBD anti-anxiety drops, but that just gives her the shitkies. \240So, now we just try to get her to come above board where it is quieter and there is fresh air. \240That helps some…but mostly she just hides down below until we stop the engine and anchor or dock somewhere.
3. \240She sheds when she is stressed. \240Luckily I clean about every other day and this had kept down the cat hair. \240
4. \240She sometimes tracks cat litter. \240This is a pain because then I step on it. \240Kinda grosses me out. \240Like bird seed, it’s constant stuggle.
5. \240She needs to scratch. \240We have two scratching pads for her but apparently that is not enough because she likes to scratch on the fabric covered mast post.
6. \240She likes to explore. \240There is constant fear at this point that she will explore herself off the boat. \240To combat this, I try to take her for walks when we are at the marinas. \240I bought a great harness and leashe that seems to be working and staying on her. \240She likes it outside, but she does not like being carried off the boat. \240I have some ideas that I plan to try to help with that issue when we dock next.
Things that are nice about cats on board:
1. \240Even with all this stress issues aside she is a very sweet kitty. \240She doesn’t try to attack the birds and is very chill. \240As long as the boat is quiet and she is fed, she is pretty happy.
2. \240She likes to cuddle and enjoyed lap time. \240This is great on cold evenings. \240
3. \240She is good companion and we are hoping she will continue to adapt to boat life and the routine.
Day 18 (Wednesday)
We are anchored outside of Clearwater Yacht Club. \240This is a really nice, clean club. \240Great food last night. \240Jim had the burger and I had French onion soup and a wedge salad. \240We did splurge and shared a Boston cream pie cake for dessert. \240😉
Today the Bar/pres 30.14/Temp 50degrees/Forecast calls for sunny skies. \240Another beautiful day. \240Up early. \240Breakfast was sourdough pancakes, link sausage, eggs and grapefruit. \240Birds and cat in good spirits.
Jim tinkered with the generator and I tidied up the galley and salon. \240My biggest task is getting a shower and \240cleaning the cat litter box. \240(See previous post on the fun times traveling with pets!) \240We waited and passed time until the boat at the dock left…then we so maneuvered our way over to that slip. \240We are expecting some friends from the FWYC to arrive with their trawler (BELLE) sometime today. \240(Sam, Jennifer, Leslie)
Clearwater YC
BELLE and HERON NOW…together on the dock
After shower and chores we basically just hung around the boat having a down day. \240I watched a movie and read my book. \240I took Lucy for a walk. \240Jim worked on reading up some of the electrical systems on the boat. \240Most of the manuals are a poor translation from Dutch or German and it’s been a puzzle for him trying to work through some of these manuals. \240(Any electrical engineers out there feel free to contact us!)
This is Lucy’s idea of going for a walk. \240Find a place to sit…then just watch.
Lunch was really late but delicious! \240Tortellini, Josh’s spaghetti sauce, and salad. \240We had sundowner cocktails in our cockpit with the guests from the BELLE (Sam, Jennifer and Leslie). \240Talked until dark then settled into watch the rest of FINAL episode of season 6 THE CROWN. \240I didn’t feel like cooking, so dinner was PBJ sandwiches.
Sam & Jennifer Grant (Ricky photobombing), Leslie Hanley
Both of us were tired after doing pretty much nothing today (tongue in cheek) so we went to bed.
Day 19 (Thursday)
Temp 58 degrees
Bar/Pres 30.01
We are still hanging at the dock at Clearwater YC one more day to let the weather system pass on by. \240We are expecting some wet and cold weather.
We walked to breakfast in town at a place called SpEGGtacular. Good food. Hot coffee.
We then took the Jolly Trolley and the bus to West Marine. Jim needed to pick up some new shore power cables. While he was there I went to Aldi and got a few groceries.
Riding the Jolly Trolley
Jim worked on things around the boat. I mended the winch covers. But generally we just hung around the boat. It was wet and chilly outside.
Lunch was chicken curry. Dinner at the club and then a bit of TV and bed. A good down day.
Day 20 (Friday)

Bridge to the Gulf. CWYC entrance to the right of bridge.

After a nice hot breakfast of Oatmeal and fixings, we motored the ICW south to Little Harbor Marina, Ruskin.
Winds kicked up a bit when we got Boca Ciega Bay. Changed direction to the SE.
Lunch was sandwiches and cut up veggies and grapes.
Trip was uneventful and low stress. As usual Lucy hid under the nav desk and the birds enjoyed the cockpit.
Ricky taking a shift at the helm
Fred on watch
We arrived at Little Harbor Marina in Ruskin. This is the same marina we stayed at in mid-December. Mary will hole up here for a week while Jim heads home for appointments.
Dinner was tortellini and salad.
We called it an early night.
Day 21 (Saturday)
Up early, breakfast. Caught an Uber to the rental car place, then Jim dropped me off at Mallorie’s house to do laundry.
Rainy conditions/ Temp 71
I spent all day doing laundry at Mallorie’s and Jim worked doing things around the boat.
There were a few things that went wrong today.
1. \240We had the boat waste tank pumped out but the toilet had an issue flushing. \240So Jim spent the evening after dinner trying to replace the pumping mechanism. \240I am sure it’s called something else, but I don’t know what it is. \240Anyway, we were lucky that the previous owners left a new AND a rebuilt pump on the boat. \240This is great! \240We don’t have to find a place that supplies them. \240It would quite literally stink and be a HUGH inconvenience if we had to go to the bathroom in the marina every time we had to pee or do something worse! \240He worked on the toilet with no success until midnight. \240More on this issue tomorrow….😳💩🚽
2. \240The more serious discovery is the shore power connector socket that is attached to the boat shorted out and when Jim pulled it out, the wires were fried. \240Pretty scary. \240But, the good news is that he can get the part from West Marine tomorrow and replace and fix it.
Fried shore power receptacle 😳
It’s quite maddening how these types of things happen the night before you have to get out of town. \240Jim is leaving to head home for a few days of appointments. \240His plan was to leave out tomorrow morning, but that is not going to happen. \240Unfortunately he can’t just leave me to work on this…I wouldn’t know where to start. \240AND we NEED the toilet and power! \240Two things that would be hard to work without…not impossible…but very inconvenient to do without.
We ate out for dinner at a place called the FISH HOUSE. \240Reminded me a little of STEWBY’S back home. \240Jim enjoyed his grouper. \240My meal was ok, but no comparison to what we get at STEWBY’S.
Hopefully heading to bed soon.
Day 22 (Sunday)
All in all this was a REAL shitty day!
Jim went to West Marine and Lowe’s first thing to pick up what was needed to repair the electrical and toilet problems.
He started on the shore power receptacle first and other than having less wire length than desired, he repaired this fairly quickly and problem #1 solved!
Lunch was soup and sandwiches.
On to the toilet. \240This is a tale of 😮 fer sure! \240Last night he attempted to replace the Joker valve. \240I thought he was calling it a “Choker” valve. \240I thought this was kind of a funny name for something that allows “human waste” to flow through, but not back up. \240Hence the reason I thought it was “choker” not “joker”. \240Some of the names of parts on a boat are really funny. \240But this “joker” valve did not do the trick. \240So, on to trying to replace the entire pump. \240Luckily we had two pumps on board in the spare parts. \240(One rebuilt and one new)
This did not work either. \240This went on last night up to about midnight. \240I fell asleep during some of this, but when he finally showered and came to bed he thought that he figured out the issue.
So this afternoon he set out to work on what he said was a clogg in the line. \240First he tried a plumber’s snake. \240That didn’t work. \240Then he opened the floor and tried working on the plumbing lines. \240(I may not be telling this accurately, but this is what it looked like to me.)
Anyway, he found the lines to the toilet system and also the line that the macerating pump sends out to the water outside. \240Now this line says NOT to open! \240This is a warning issued by the Coast Guard. \240Essentially, when the macerator is on it chops and grinds up the waste and shoots it out of the boat and into the water. \240There is some sort of distance you have to be in open water, off shore to “legally” dump your sh——. \240Well….Jim had the thought that maybe if we turn on the macerator, the clog would clear!
So he went up top and yelled at me to turn it on. \240I did….nothing came out. \240Hmmm? \240He tried a few other things…not sure what….then went up top again….and we tried again. \240Nothing. \240Hmmmm? \240Then he came down to where the floor was open and we tried ONE MORE TIME.
As he is watching the pipes in the floor…all of a sudden I hear Jim say….”HOLY SHIT!!!” \240 Well this can’t be good…I think.💩😳. Next thing I know, I stop the macerator and he says that the poop and god knows what else is coming out of the toilet and pipes in the head!!!!! \240Eeek! \240 I can’t give justice with words to describe the mess and the smell that this made. \240It was just plain AWFULL!!!
We spent the next hour or so cleaning it up and mopping it up and sanitizing the surfaces and the air. \240Did I say that it was awfull? \240 I wish I had pictures…but you can imagine it I’m sure. \240😂
We laugh and gagged our way through this. \240Jim was a mess, but he was happy that the clog was fixed and he was finished and could get on the road.
He finally got out of here by 4:35pm EST and made it home at 11:10pm CST. \240A very long day for him.
Day 23 (Monday)
Jim made it home safely and I slept in until about 7:30am.
It’s a chilly morning and we are all moving slowly. \240Breakfast was banana bread and hot coffee!
- Temp 52 and getting colder
- Cloudy and predicted to rain today.
- Wind from the NE at 7kts
No real plan today except to clean up around the boat and take a walk. \240Note: \240I am on toilet watch thought…there is a leak each time I flush. \240So, I am still not trusting that thing!
leak!
Lunch was leftover lentil soup and salad. Fresh tangerine as well.
I took a short 2.5 mile walk. Checked out the neighborhood.
Lucy was super cuddly today.
Th

e temp raised to about 71 degees and it was a bit warmer heading to bed.
Dinner was yummy conucah sausage, garlic mashed potatoes and green beans.
Spent my evening crocheting and watching my trash tv.
A pretty chill day.
Day 24 (Tuesday)
Just a reminder to me….Happy Birthday mom! \240You would have been 88 years old.
The boat is really rocking. We are expecting pretty stong winds this afternoon, early evening. Rain should be hard as well. I’m in a very sheltered marina with floating docks, but the area is a flood zone just off Little Manatee River. Should be interesting to see how the area fares.
future forecast
Breakfast was banana bread and grapefruit.
Morning spent tidying up, making tuna pasta salad for lunch. Can’t wait! \240Looks deeeeelicious!
The weather did as predicted. \240Wind gusts up to about 35-40 knots. \240Rain came around 4:30pm. \240 Other than the lines creaking and some leaks in the cockpit and rocking and rolling….it was pretty quiet. \240No lightning. \240Thankfully.
Dinner, crochet, TV….then bed.
Day 25 (Wednesday)
Temp is 57/ Partly Cloudy/ No chance of rain!

Today I rented a car and spent the day with my granddaughter Emma. \240We went to the Dali museum in downtown St. Petersburg, FL. \240 We didn’t take a lot of pictures in the museum because there was so much to look at. \240It is a small museum and they had a 360-degree Dali “Experience” that was pretty cool. \240The visiting exhibit was Dali and the impressionists. \240So we were able to view some Monet, Manet, Renoir and other artists during that period and see how S. Dali progressed during that time period.
The Dali mustache!
After the museum we walked along the river to lunch at Cassis. \240A French restaurant. \240I was a beautiful day so we sat outside and reminisced about when we went to Paris. \240The food was outstanding and we just ordered the appetizers!
A short walk back to the car and a modest drive back to the boat where we hung out with the animals before heading back to Mallorie’s house for dinner. \240Dinner was delicious pasta and brussels sprouts.
Too tired to read or do anything else, so off to bed!
Day 26 (Thursday)
Temp 53/Partly Cloudy
Wind 5kts out of the NE
Bar-prs 30.1
Nothing to report really. \240Just went to Walmart to get groceries and an Ethernet cable. \240I pretty much spent a good chunk of the day trying to get the Wi-Fi extender antenna and modem to work. \240Tech support was patient with me. \240I was able to get it working on phones and IPads…just not the laptop.
Will try again tomorrow.
Day 27 (Friday)
Rainy and drizzly.
Temp 62
Bar-Pres 29.92
Winds 10kts SE
Here is my morning so far….is this the way my day will go? \240Not sure…😼
I just got finished straightening up and vacuumed. \240Cleaning up cat vomit and bird poop….just sat down to drink a bit of coffee and Lucy takes a huge dump in her box…I just cleaned!!!! \240Ugh! \240Stinky and smelly! \240(sigh)
I returned rental car. Then Zoom/Facetime field trip with Mallorie’s 2nd grade class at Valrico Charter School. \240I took the kids on a virtual ZOOM tour of the boat. \240The focus of the visit was on energy and velocity. \240They learned about the many uses of energy that we have on our sailboat “home”. \240They asked some really great questions. \240They were concerned about traffic, hurricanes, rain, accidents, who rescues us, eating meals, showering and the pets!
The LP gas red DANGER light has come on and I don’t know what that is so I wait until Jim gets back to take care of that. \240In the meantime it will be cold meals. \240No worries…I have that handled. \240Lunch was cold rotisserie chicken and salad.
I continued to puzzle through the WI-FI extender install. \240No resolution yet, but tech support is great. \240It’s just that we are now going into the weekend and I don’t expect I will get any further until Monday.
Temperatures got up to 74 today! \240It was rainy…then really humid.
Jim made it back to the boat at approx. 4:30pm. \240It’s good to have him home. \240We walked to dinner at HOOKS in the marina neighborhood. \240It was ok food.
Because of the humidity we decided to run the air conditioner. \240This was a welcome break from the damp. \240Unpack, bed….getting ready to head out tomorrow for Bradenton. \240😎
Day 28 (Saturday)
Temp 63/ Winds NW at 12 kts/ bar-prs 29.93
Conditions are partly cloudy…getting down to 45 degrees. \240Gonna be a cold night!
Jim worked this morning to fix the leaky toilet while I tidied up in preparation for leaving the dock. \240We left Little Harbor Marina at 1:30pm heading toward Tampa Bay and then Manatee River. \240Our goal was to anchor out at Emerson Point, across from Desoto point.
When we entered the bay it was pretty windy and the waves were messy. \240Winds were about 12-1 knots with some strong gusts at times. \240Lucy did not like it at all!
She feels safer surrounded by something when the waves roll.
Birds love this!
Waves were around 2-3 feet and rolled us from side to side for most of the trip until we approached the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. \240Then the wind died down a bit and the trip was calmer.
We put up the staysail after entering the bay and it helped a bit. \240Once the winds died down we put the jib up at 3:40pm. \240Just before going under the bridge.
Goodbye Tampa Bay!
We were able to hold a steady speed of 4.2 knots.
We arrived at our anchorage at 6:08pm…just as the sun was going down over Desoto Point. \240Unfortunately the windlass was not working. \240(One more thing to look at 🙄) Jim had to lower the anchor by hand.
Dinner was cold chicken and left over tuna pasta salad. \240We watch some tv as we digested and then went to bed early. Temperature dropped to about 53 and it was chilly.
Day 29 (Sunday)
Spent the chilly, wet morning on the hook at Emerson Point.
Breakfast was French Toast, link sausage and grapefruit.
We had plans to go to Desoto Monument, but the weather was not going our way. \240So Jim lazed around reading up on boat stuff and doing small chores. \240I played my ukulele for the first time in months, read and made cookies.🍪
Chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. \240
Using my silicone cooking sheets for the first time. \240Works like a champ!
Lunch did not happen because we decided to pull up the anchor and head to Bradenton Yacht Club.
One funny story….Jim was at the bow trying to get the anchor bridle hook off the anchor chain but his arms were too short to reach it. \240It’s out on the end of the bow sprit and he was fighting the current and there was not enough slack in the chain to allow him to unhook the bridal that was attached to the anchor chain. \240 I would have been able to help by manuvering the boat in the direction needed to allow for some slack, but his headset got turned off and whatever he was saying to me….I could not hear. 🙄 Eventually I heard him shouting at me and I realized we were disconnected. \240I hit the button to connect us again and he told me to come get him…NOW! \240He was STUCK! 😳. He had wriggled his body between the railing of the bow pulpit while trying to reach the hook and his body was stuck between the roller furler (sp?) and the railing. \240Half of his body was between the railing, hanging over the side of the boat and his legs were stuck between the furler. 😂 After undoing the pretzel🥨 that was his body, we were able to get him untangled and back to work on the anchor. \240Needless to say, we need a better plan for that bridle!
We \240got underway and arrived at Bradenton Yacht club about 4:45pm. \240Dockmaster gets a “C”, but the club itself is fantastic. \240They have a heated pool and pickleball courts! The grounds and views are stunning as so are the sunsets. They also have bikes that we can use to tour around if we desire.Dinner was at the club. \240I continue my comparison of French Onion soup. \240So far Clearwater YC is in the lead.
Day 30 (Monday)
We have been out on the boat for ONE MONTH! \240It really does not feel like it. \240I don’t have that overwhelming urge to go home that I usually get when I’m on vacation. \240I can only chock it up to the fact that we have made this boat our home and I think that has made the difference. \240That doesn’t mean that I don’t get stir crazy. \240Yes, sometimes I just need to get off and walk around or sit outside the boat. \240But mostly, I am very comfortable in this new lifestyle. \240So far….🎶😉
Temp is 62 degrees, partly cloudy. Bar-Pres 30.08
We both slept in late. \240Breakfast was banana nut muffins and leftover conucah sausage, with a tangerine.
We enjoyed a nice swim in the heated pool! \240AND a hot shower. \240It rained a bit today. \240I got groceries via INSTACART for the first time and it was really convenient and not too expensive. \240It helps to have coupons. \240(Just a suggestion)
Lucy decided to go on a walk about by herself. \240She hopped off the boat and found me sitting out by the pool. \240Eventually though, I thought it was wise to put her on her leash so I could grab her when I needed to leave.
Lots of cool bird life here. \240Pelicans and osprey galore. \240Shore birds and Cormorants and a few turkey buzzards. \240One dolphin…but no manatee….yet. \240I am still waiting. \240I did see this really cool bird called a Black-crowned Night-Heron. \240Apparently a threatened species. \240This was one gorgeous bird. \240I watched it for a long time as I sat by the pool.
Played a bit of ukulele, watched some of the Iowa Caucasus, ate dinner (chicken enchiladas) and went to bed. \240Tomorrow we move out again. \240Heading to Longboat Key.
Day 31 (Tuesday)
68 degrees/BP 29.94 / Winds 13 kts S
Going to be a rainy day. We left Bradenton YC at 10:45am. \240It was not raining yet and had a pretty easy time exiting the river channel and motoring in the the Anna Maria channel. \240Pretty narrow at times and thankful for the clearer weather. \240Temp got up to 70 degrees and stayed that way all day.
As we approached the Cortez Bridge around 1:15pm, we debated dropping anchor to ride out the system that was following us. \240But, we decided to just keep going and if we got rained on we would just ride it out. \240We figured it was the tail end of the system and would not last long. \240Jim was right. (Yes, I said it!) \240That is what we did. \240We kept going. Just a little bit of rain between 1:30-2:30…not bad at all.
Leaving Anna Maria Island Bridge
We did change our destination to the Sarasota Yacht Club instead of Bird Key Yacht Club. \240We couldn’t get anyone on the phone at Bird Key to secure dockage for the night so we motored on across Sarasota Bay to the Sarasota YC.
We entered Sarasota Bay at 2:28pm just as the rain was clearing up. \240The bay was calm and we had no problems at all. \240In fact, the current was pushing us along and giving us some more speed and that was nice.
We had to go around Bird Key and up the Lido channel to reach the marina at the SYC. \240The marina sign was underwater, but even so, we had not issues getting the the club. \240There were so GINORMOUS houses surrounding the area. \240A whole different level of swank here! \240 I wish I had my camera up on the bow because Jim spotted a pure white pelican! \240Dang….
The two glass structures are one house.
These houses are just across the channel from where our boat is docked. \240The picture does not show the scale or size. \240But they are HUGE!
We got docked at very easily by 4:15pm. \240Jim backed in like a champ. \240Ate dinner at the Spinnaker Bar and Grill just off the heated pool. \240We were definitely underdressed to enter the dining room, but maybe we will venture in there tomorrow. \240The bartender said that they serve complimentary coffee and pastries in the morning so we are gonna do that in the morning!
Just the entrance.
Bed early for me…Jim stayed up. \240It’s dropped about 5 degrees and getting colder. \240More tomorrow.
Day 32 (Wednesday)
Temp 49/ Clear/ Wind 12kts NE
This morning we walked up to the club to have coffee and pastries. \240Talked to one of the members about the area and how it has changed. \240This is pretty much the same story everywhere we go. \240Florida is becoming overcrowded and overpriced.
High carb meal at the SYC
Back to the boat to gather laundry and get a shower. \240This club offers free towels, shampoo etc and even a sauna. \240It’s like being at a hotel. \240Very convenient. \240One negative for me was that the shower was just Luke warm. \240In fact, I have forgotten to mention this about Bradenton YC. \240The lady’s shower did not even turn on!! \240I had to take my shower in the men’s bathroom.
Meanwhile, Lucy escaped off the boat and Jim had to go get her. \240She definitely has developed the itch to wander. \240We now have to watch her like a hawk or she might wander off. \240😳🐈⬛. I did take her for a walk and she did more wandering, so she is getting the hang of what “going for a walk” means.
Lucy is on house arrest
Who me?
You still love me though????
I thought so.
Speaking of walks, Jim and I walked to St. Armand Circle just up the road. \240It’s an interesting tourist trap with all the shops and restraurants that would expect in a upscale beach town. \240We also walked to Lido Beach and saw the Gulf of Mexico. \240It had a cool nature trail, but we did not walk it. \240Maybe next time? \240🤷♀️
Lunch at Cha Cha Coconut in St. Armand
Just over the footpath is the Gulf
Beautiful Club.
I did find some postcards to send out to the grandkids and I got those written and sent off. \240We had a relaxing evening and then it was bed.
Day 33 (Thursday)
Temp 59/ Partly Cloudy…chance of rain later today.
BP 30.17 / Winds light 7kts E
We were ready early to head out but we needed a pump out and some fuel. \240We waited and waited for the dock help to come, but when they finally got here and we got fuel up and pumped out it was about 12:28pm. \240Much later than I wanted to leave. \240Anyway, we got on our way and headed toward Venice Yacht Club.
Look who came to visit while I waited. \240This is a Great Heron…sometimes called a White Heron or Egret.
I love his tail feathers!
I thought this was a pretty part of the ICW. \240Lots of mangrove swamps and large houses….but very peaceful. \240Most of the area we went through was populated by large flocks of white heron and pelicans. \240It was funny to see these large birds perched up top of the bushes. \240This area is also a slow speed zone to protect manatees. \240And no, I STILL have not seen a manatee yet!
White Pelicans. \240We saw LOTS of these on the way.
Jim got it in his mind that we would anchor out, but that proved to be more difficult that he thought. \240There was very little area with enough depth that we felt comfortable in to anchor out for the night…so we called the Venice YC at the 11th hour and were able to secure dockage for the night.
We had a visit from some sailing neighbors from Minnesota and they were heading south to the keys as well. \240Nice couple, had a little dog with them. \240They told us about their traveling along parts of the Loop. \240By circumstance, we caravanned on our way here with another Island Packet (Dream Chaser). \240 It looked like they were outfitted for ocean sailing. \240When they passed we saw that they hailed from Maine. \240No idea where they will end up, but I bet they are heading south to the keys too!
Dinner at the club was good. \240Great black and blue salad. \240No French onion soup, but they did have a wonderful, savory Scotch Broth Orzo soup that was deeelisheeous!
We saw this cute little bunny on the YC lawn as we headed back to the boat.
As usual, back on the boat to relax, digest and head to bed. \240We are going to stay here for a few days and maybe Jim will get to kite board, I will back some bread and swim and who knows what else! \240That is the beauty of this life.
Day 34 (Friday)
Temp 63/No wind this morning/BP 30.07
Party cloudy with a chance of rain later this morning. \240Sunny and mild temps by this afternoon.
Got up early, made simple breakfast and then took a walkabout the club to check things out. \240They have a heated pool, kayaks and paddle boards, several dining rooms and bars, HOT showers (finally) and fantastic sunrises.

Jim and I took the dinghy to North Venice Beach and tried our luck at looking for prehistoric shark teeth. \240I found a few very very small ones. \240There is a lot of history in this inlet. \240See link if you are interested in reading more! \240https://www.fossilguy.com/sites/venice/index.htm
It was interesting how foggy it was in the gulf. \240The water was a modest temperature and very clear. \240The beach was nothing but shells upon shells. \240Made for hard walking with my sensitive footsies. \240😉

I made bread and we had lentil soup (I made this and froze it before leaving home) and my fresh baked bread. \240Absolute Heaven!
We took a swim and showers after. \240Jim took advantage of the quiet late afternoon to get a quick nap. \240I just read and drank my coffee.
Dinner and drinks at the club bar, then digest and bed. \240Another gorgeous day.
Day 35 (Saturday)
Temp 51 (feels like 45) / Wind out of the north 10kts/ BP 30.24/ no rain in sight.
Woke up early to catch the sunrise. \240Stunning!
I made eggs Benedict for breakfast and it was very yummy.
Eggs Benedict w sourdough focaccia
Left Venice YC at 10:20am. Fair wind so we raised the jib at 12:22pm. We were able to bring the throttle back and enjoy a somewhat quiet journey. This part of the GICW is very narrow and shallow in parts. We ran aground briefly but were able to continue.
We secured dockage at Palm Harbor Marina and arrived at 2:40pm. It’s a small marina. Clean and with a pool and showers. They also have a hot tub.
Lucy took several walk abouts without permission. She is getting very ballsy. She always comes back, but she is sneaky. And now that she has a taste of freedom, she is vocal about getting outside.
I took a short walk to this quaint little convenience store that has a deli and fresh cooked takeaway meals. I got us a few of those for dinner. I chose chicken Parmesan with ziti. We managed to only finish half. So leftovers for dinner or lunch tomorrow!
I was apparently tired and fell asleep at 8:30pm.
Day 36 (Sunday)
Temp 38/52 / wind 12kt NE/ sunny and clear/ BP 30.39
Woke up late around 7:30am. \240Had a nice hot breakfast. \240Watched Sunday Mass on YouTube and got ready to head out. \240Lucy got out without us knowing, but she came right back just as we were about to shove off! \240Smart kitty….😼
Left PalmHarbor Marina docks 10:15am and landed aground just inside the channel during low tide. \240Got unstuck at 11:56am. \240Lesson learned today is to always check when low/hide tide is going to be and plan accordingly. \240😉
We plotted a route to Pelican Bay. \240This part of the GICW is pretty shallow. \240But it is a pretty quiet path. \240Very little traffic at all…partly because of the cold…but still the area itself is mangroves and houses on the beach. \240Very pretty.
A note about this route. \240After Placida Harbor there is a swing bridge called Boca Grande Causeway Bridge. \240CAUTION!! \240There are 3 bridges on this causeway. \240The swing bridge is located on the northern end. \240Thankfully it opens on demand, BUT after the bridge there is an old derelict pier that has a section missing. \240This is hard to see on the satellite map. \240When you come through the bridge, stay in the channel and head in between the small space between the two sections of pier. \240Then you swing right and continue to follow the channel. \240I’m glad we weren’t traveling my night, because we might not have seen this!
A swing bridge
Once we got into Gasparilla Sound we put up the jib and turned off the engine. \240It was a nice quiet sail until we had to start the engine again to get into Pelican Bay.
We arrived at Pelican Bay at 3:30pm. \240We had some problems with depth getting into the anchorage. \240This was not really a surprise because all the reviews said it could be tricky. \240We made it in but did not go as far in as we would liked too. \240Once we got settled we took a dinghy for a bumpy, windy ride to the sandbar beach behind us. \240We walked around a bit and then took the dinghy over to the state park dock to check it out. \240Unfortunately, the park is closed because it sustained damage during Hurricane Ian and they have not repaired the docks yet. \240So, we went back to the boat for a nice quiet evening on the hook. \240Since cellular and Wi-Fi were non-existent, we read and listened to music after dinner and then went to bed.
Day 37 (Monday)
Did not sleep well. Lots of wave action here. \240Winds were up to 19kts and just rolling us all around. \240Anchor held amazingly well. \240This was one of the reasons we wanted to anchor further into the Bay….better protection but we were afraid it was just too shallow.
Jim got up about 1:35am to tighten up and secure the dinghy from bumping and rubbing on the stern. \240At 5:30am we started bumping the bottom. \240I couldn’t sleep during this so I got up and made coffee and got started on the day. \240I caught another gorgeous sunrise and sat out a bit, said my rosary and just enjoyed the peace.
I love this picture! \240Sunbeams and all.
Temp is 57/winds 10kts NE/ Partly cloudy/ BP 30.37
The weather is forecast to be sunny and mild up until Thursday. \240We did have nice sunny skies…but it was still chilly. \240We reached high temp of 62.
It was a lazy day, and we really didn’t do much. \240I lazed around with the birds, read my book and Jim researched more about our navagation station. \240Cleaned up a bit. \240Had a nice lunch of lentil soup and grilled cheese.
Ricky is about to fall asleep and so am I!
Later in the day, we decided it might be nice to take the dinghy to the beach; the winds were up enough for Jim to kiteboard. \240It was a production to get all the gear on board the dinghy with the winds rocking us all around…but we did it! \240He got in about an hour before we needed to get going back to the boat before sundown.
While we were on the beach we met a couple that are “loopers” from Virginia. \240Mike and Barbara Bruhn. \240They rescued Jim’s board and then came over to say hello. \240Turns out that Mike is a kiteboarder too! \240Their boat is a 2006 455 cruisers yacht named THE JACKIE B III. \240Really nice people. \240 (Blog info: \240jackiebiiigoingloopy.blogspot.com )
I got to use the indoor shower for the first time. \240Dinner was simple and I was so tired that I went bed early. \240Jim joined me and it didn’t take long for me to fall asleep.
Day 38 (Tuesday)
Today is Carol’s birthday. \240Happy birthday Carol!
Temp 65 and will get as high as 73. \240Finally some warmer temperatures!
Winds are 11 kts out of the SE. \240BP 30.28
Our plans are to head northeast toward either Charlotte Harbor or Punta Gouda. \240Not sure where we are staying tonight. \240We will either anchor out or stay at one of the yacht clubs. \240Waiting to hear back from them.
I heard back from the Isles Yacht Club and we will dock there for a few nights. \240We have a nice day on the water.
We left Pelican Bay at 10:56am just as the tide was high. \240The only problem we had was the windlass. \240It has been acting up since we anchored out last. \240Something with the battery or something. \240Anyway, Jim will need to investigate that tomorrow.
We raised the jib at 12:15pm and maintain speed of 4.7-6.0 knots. \240No motor…so it was quiet and peaceful. \240Just the way we like it. \240✌️
We arrived at the Isles YC at 3:45pm. \240Easy place to roll up too. \240Nice Dockmaster. \240This club has free ice, laundry, water, and a heated pool. \240I took a swim and then we both showered up. \240They had hot water! \240Ahhh…so luxurious.
Dinner at the club. \240The French onion soup here was divine. \240So far the YC winner. \240I also ordered an espresso martini. \240Yum yum yum! \240After dinner we did our normal TV and bed. \240🛌
Jim doing his best GRumpa Norm imitation. \240
Day 39 (Wednesday)
Temp 67-77. \240A nice humid, warm Florida day.
Winds are 12 kts out of the SE. \240BP 20.25
Today is laundry day. \240We woke up and almost immediately started a day of chores and repairs. \240We had leftovers from my dinner for breakfast. \240I started laundry and walking the cat, while Jim started on the windlass puzzle. \240It’s a good thing because the windlass is acting up and Jim will need to remove everything from the front berth in order to get to the batteries that are stored below. \240This will be an all morning chore…maybe an all day chore.
He also found the place to change the generator oil so he can check it and change it. \240I wish I had a picture of him doing this. \240He was tucked up in a lazerette under the cockpit seating. \240It’s crazy where they store things on this boat! \240Anyway, he cleaned the engine water strainer on the generator and the strainer on motor raw water strainer. \240 I wish I had a picture of what was collected in that as well! \240Lots of sea grass and debris. \240He also cleaned the bird area.
In the meantime I spent the morning ordering groceries and planning lunch of some sort. \240I had a bit of a headache from last night espresso martini so I was not moving quickly. \240🙄I really don’t know where the time goes sometimes. \240I feel like the day just flew.
When I finally received the groceries from Instacart, (see instacart note in next post) we walked over to the club and and sat outside to relax and enjoy the live music and Jim wanted a beer.🍺 \240 The moon was up and I took some pictures, but they don’t do justice to what it really looked like.
Moon above the club. \240
The club was hosting a whiskey and cigar night and it forced us inside to eat at the bar. \240This was ok, because I could not stand the cigar smell. \240🤢. We met a few more members and this club IS really friendly, as advertised. \240So far this has been the most comfortable and welcoming club. \240Sarasota YC was nice and had good amenities, but IYC really has been quaint and welcoming.
The food was good and we took our leftovers and headed back to the boat. \240I decided to bake a shortcake for our trip (forgot to take picture of this as well!) \240while Jim watched our newest TV series (The English Game). \240 I baked and then joined him to watch TV, digest and relax before bed.
Day 40 (Thursday)
Temp 68-76/Wind 8 knots SE/ no rain predicted/ BP 30.2
Up early, getting ready to head out to EAGLE SANCTUARY anchorage. \240It is our plan to anchor out tonight. \240Hopefully it won’t be too hot!
Bocce Ball area (see links below on how to play)
Jim spent the day sprucing up the outside of the boat and cleaning the cockpit area. \240 I worked on cleaning the inside of the boat and taking care of trash and other things down below. \240 The area was on a boil water notice so we were unable to get our water tank filled…but no worries, we still have water. \240It’s just very convenient to have it filled at a nice dock.
We left the Isles Yacht Club at 1:35pm and Made it to our anchorage at 3:50pm. We puttered around Charlotte Harbor before anchoring. \240We wanted to see what we could see. \240We also found the entrance to Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club. \240We had originally planned to dock there for a few days, but they did not have room for us.
We enjoyed a beautiful sunset and even a far off visit from some dolphin. \240Leftovers for dinner and then digest and bed. \240This is a very peaceful spot to hang out.
INSTACART and GROCERY delivery notes:
I am not sure about this food delivery system yet. \240I would prefer to be able to pick out my own produce. \240It feels very stressful to have to depend on someone else to choose your fresh veggies and fruit for you, especially since the prices are really crazy right now. \240I spend a lot of time shopping sales and this takes time when you are doing it online. \240I was not happy with this latest shopping experience. \240My order was picked up twice and then dropped. \240When it was finally picked up again, the order I placed at 11am did not get delivered until 5pm. \240AND there were produce issues and also issues with items I was charged for but did not receive. \240I have spent part of my evening and then next morning STILL working out the credit and refund. \240That is still pending as I type this. \240So far I am not too happy with Instacart. \240But the alternative is booking a LYFT or UBER for $40 round trip to the grocery store. \240That is crazy too. \240So Instacart is the more economical thing right now, even though there are headaches in dealing with them. \240Such is boat life. I knew there would be challenges, but this one IS a challenge. \240At times.
Day 41 (Friday)
Temp 67-76/ Winds 6 kts SE/Sunny to partly cloudy /BP 30.18/96% humidity
This was a day on the hook. \240Slow, lazy and very nice to have these days every once in a while. \240We planned to go over to Ponce de Leon park just off our port side today. \240We have to wait for the tide so while we waited, Jim worked on bills and appointments. \240I worked on routes, getting my rental car for next week and figuring out where we are going to be the next few weeks.
After lunch we got the dinghy ready and went over to see the Ponce de Leon park and the Peace River Wildlife Center. \240There was no fountain of youth…I feel cheated. \240Hmm? \240The PRWC is a small little wildlife sanctuary that rehabilitates wildlife and also permanently houses some animals that would not make it in the wild. \240(See link if interested ) https://prwildlife.org/
I bought a few postcards while we were there and we walked the mangrove swamp path and took the dinghy through some of the canals. \240Lots of houses out here on the swamp! \240I guess there really are people who bought some “great swamp land for sale in Florida”!

A bit of history
A Barred owl….super cool looking
Saw this spider with a fresh kill on my walk. \240The worm was still wriggling. \240Ew!
Back at the boat it was relaxing and another great sunset. \240Dinner was a light chicken and mixed salad, but I did make dessert! \240Strawberry shortcake. \240I had leftover buttermilk and had to do something with it. \240😉🍓
Digest, tv, bed….another day over.
Strawberry Shortcake
Lucy napping on my bed. \240I couldn’t resist.
Day 42 (Saturday)
Temp 66-76/ winds 9 kts SE/ Sunny to Partly cloudy/BP 30.11/98% humidity
Low Tide: \24010:55am
High Tide: 5:19pm
We need water and propane. \240That is what our chore is today. \240We also need to decide where we are going to hole up this week and next.
The tentative plan is get to Ft Myers because I am heading home for a week, but the ultimate destination is the Keys. \240Mostly we are waiting to hear back from places that we hope can accomadate us. \240Stay tuned…
We pulled up anchor from the Eagle Sanctuary anchorage at 10:05am and motored our way back to the Isles YC. \240We decided to go back there to get water. \240Going into the entrance, we made it through the bump with no issue.
The wind was blowing from the east as we had some trouble getting tied to the dock so we went back out and circled in the canals a bit and waited until the T dock was clear. \240Then went back in and got about 3/4 tank of water. \240The Dockmaster (Bob) was on duty and there were other people waiting to get fuel at the T-dock so we did not get all that we needed. \240We went on our way. \240Outside the channel, we grounded on “the bump” at 12:25pm and had to get loose before we could head out. \240Fortunately this did not take long. \240
We decided not to head to Pelican Bay as planned and instead we anchored outside of the north side of Pine Island in an anchorage called Jug Creek. \240We arrived and dropped anchor at 5:45pm. \240It was easy in and was calm after the boat traffic died down.
Dinner was strawberry shortcake. \240🍰😍
Day 43 (Sunday)
Temp 59-68 degrees/BP 30.05/ SW 10-15 knots
High tide 4:32pm
Low tide 10:04am
Woke up to the batteries not charging. \240We are going to have to alter our plan to get somewhere that has a marine mechanic to help up figure the issue out. \240We will probably look for someone in Ft Myers since we will be there on Wednesday. \240Jim has done all that he knows how to do with the batteries and we need shore power, otherwise we will be out of power.
We secured dockage this afternoon at the Cabbage Key Marina on the east side of Cabbage Key. \240In the meantime, we have to wait out the weather. \240Winds have kicked up to 14 kts out of the WNW and are really pushing us around. \240The marina can’t take us until after 3pm. \240So we will plan to leave Jug Creek around 1pm. \240It will take approximately 2 hours to motor to our next stop.
We left Jug Creek at 1:31pm. \240The winds had picked up to 17-18 kts out of the NNW. \240Waves were 1-2 feet of heavy chop. \240It was slow going fighting the waves and wind. \240We raised the staysail at 2:30pm once we made the turn west. \240With the sail and our engine we were able to increase speed to 4.2-4.5. \240Once we turned south we were doing 5.8-6!! \240We arrived at Cabbage Key Marina by 3:48pm, got secured and watched the winds pick up even more to 20kt with 29 knot gusts.
Dinner was at the Inn restrarant and then it was digest and bed. \240Cellular and Wi-Fi are nothing here.
This is an interesting place with lots of history. \240I did take a short walk around the place and will walk the path tomorrow after breakfast. \240See the link below for the historic particulars.https://cabbagekey.com/history/

Day 44 (Monday)
Temp 55-61/ BP 30.15/ Wind 17 NNW/Forecast says clear and sunny
Low Tide 9:06am
High Tide 3:14pm
Woke up late this morning…well, later than I usually do, and was not in the mood for a big production for breakfast. \240So, I made us sourdough pancakes (prepped earlier and frozen) with banana and peanuts butter. \240It was pretty good. \240I am not a banana lover. \240But, I DO like bananas with peanut butter. \240Anyway, I could check breakfast off my tasks for the day and get on with it!
After breakfast, Jim and I went for a walk on the trail they have laid out on the key. \240I was a nice walk. \240Quiet. \240We saw plenty of strange plant life, raccoon, neat little spiders, fiddler crab holes, bald eagle, osprey and shells everywhere. \240I am just glad we didn’t have a gator cross our path. \240I did see a gator trail and the signs say that sighting are “infrequent”.
Osprey or hawk
Cool air plants
A raccoon…running away
Funky looking spider. \240Wish I could have captured the colors.
We think these are raccoon tracks.
A break in the mangroves.
Shells placed in random spots all along the path.
Red Sea grass…I think?
Evidence of Hurricane Ian damage.
Fiddler crab holes. \240
Strangling fig.
Cool spider web in the sunlight.
After checking out we bought a few t-shirts and left the dock at 11:04am. Weeelllll…let me say that we attempted to leave the dock. \240The wind had really picked up out of the NE. \240(In hindsight, we should have waited). As we were backing up, we had the help of the dockhand but we still caught the anchor on the piling. The wind just kept pushing the stern over making it difficult to push off the bow. \240As we were attempting to disconnect the anchor from piling the stern got grounded in the shallow water and we were StUCK! \240Long story short….we had to call Tow Boat US. (Thankfully Jim has been paying for this for years!) \240We sat in the shallows and waited, had lunch…and waited some more. \240Finally at 2:17pm the tide was high enough to get us off the sand and we were towed out of the Cabbage Key channel and back on our way.
SIDE NOTE: \240My job was to change the towing bridal. \240I have to say that I was very nervous about doing this. \240I didn’t want to screw up and get us stuck again or damage the tow boat or our boat. \240But cooler hearts prevailed and both drivers were so chill and very professional, that even though it was an awkward task, it was done cleanly and without loss of fingers, anyone falling over board or damage to either boat.
The rest of the drive was quite lovely. \240We raised the staysail and were able to maintain a speed of 4.8-5.5 knots without having to use the engine at full speed. \240This made for a much less noisy journey. \240The winds at this time were up about 20kts with the occasional heavy gust. The lovely things about the HERON NOW is that she performs beautifully in waves and chop. \240We rock and roll, but she is a sturdy, heavy vessel and it is not hard to handle her when the things are rough. \240Very reassuring.
We \240entered the area on Captiva Island and saw the slip we were assigned at Captiva Yacht Club and it was not ideal at all! \240We did not want a repeat of this morning, so we attempted to just find a place to anchor. \240This proved to be impossible. \240Every place was either full of boat already, or too shallow. \240Or…too far away.
The sun was going to set soon and we didn’t want to be out searching for anchorage in the dark so we deliberated and decided that we would choose the slip at the club based on what was best in the conditions. \240The winds had not died down yet and they were still blowing hard from the north. \240The slip we were assigned would put our starboard on the north side of the dock with nothing but a few piling on the south side. \240There were 2 other slips that would allow the wind to blow our port side onto the dock, making a much easier attempt at docking this big girl. \240We chose slip #1. \240You might be wondering why this is even a problem?? \240Well, it was stated in our contract with the club that we would only use the assigned slip. \240We didn’t want any ill will with the club. \240But, with the conditions as they were, we chose to ask forgiveness after the fact. \240I did leave an email and if we need to move tomorrow, we will. \240Even in this slip, it was very shallow and more than likely we will be on the bottom again. \240Thankfully the tide does rise. \240We finally got her tied down and settled at approx. 5:30pm. \240Just in time for a shower an the sunset.
Captiva Island YC is a small club. \240We only saw 3 slips. \240Lots of kayaks though. \240The Gulf of Mexico is just across the street. \240Sweet! \240I see a walk on the beach in my future. \240🐚
Captiva Island Yacht Club
We will stay here a few days until we travel to the St. Charles Yacht Club in Fort Myers. \240Jim will then be able, we hope, to secure a marine electrician to help with the battery charging issues.
More tomorrow….
Day 45 (Tuesday)
Temp 53-62 degrees today. \240A bit chillier than usual. \240Forecast is clear and sunny. \240Winds down today 5-10kts. \240BP 30.18. \240Humidity 62%.
It’s gonna be a beautiful day!
High tide 4:07pm
Low tide 10:17am
We woke up to Ricky having finally laid her egg. \240I don’t believe I have even mentioned in previous journal entries that she was preggers. \240But, she is and she finally started to lay. \240Now we will begin the 3 week egg watch. \240Mostly she will sit on the nest all day. \240She will probably lay 2 more eggs. \240As she lays, we remove the eggs and replace them with 5 fake eggs. \240This stops the laying process and then she will spend approx 3 weeks of her on the nest. \240Fred will not leave her side and he will yell at me every time I need to pass the cages to get my clothes or go to the bathroom. \240Oh joy!
We had Breakfast, then took a nice walk on the beach and collected some shells. \240Later we had lunch at the Green Flash and dinner at the club. \240Jim continued to research the battery problem. \240I updated the maps for navionics on my laptop. \240I also created the first version of our boat cards. \240I have to do some editing, but I think they are pretty good.
The Green Flash signature sandwich.
Strangling fig. \240Pretty impressive looking.
Captiva Island Beach
Later, we had a very nice dinner at the club. \240This club has a beautiful sea foam green and teal interior. \240Very coastal in design. \240Much different than the other YC’s we have visited. \240The food was outstanding and you can tell this clientele are a bunch of foodies. \240I had the Crab Louie salad and the crab cakes. \240It was wonderful.
They had our club flag ready at our table. \240
Impressions of the club and area:
1. Not a sailing club. \240More a social club. \240Just a few places for dockage and no regular boats seen. \240Just kayaks.
2. Small, quaint, quiet…but exclusive, just like the area. \240Lots of large homes, rental cottages that cater to seniors, retirees and the top 1-3% that can afford to stay here.
3. The people are very nice. \240The staff are well taken care of and are professional. \240Our waiter said that they are compensated very well for their work.
4. The beach is a great place for Jim to kite. \240So, we would probably return.
Day 46 (Wednesday)
Up early, but did not catch the sunrise. \240For some reason Lucy was super vocal and it was all I could do to get her calmed down so I did not get pictures. \240Ricky has also begun to chitter. \240This will continue for weeks! \240Fred has also taken up the song and I am surprised Jim has not gotten up yet. \240🎶😂
Temp 53-69/ Wind 14-15 kts NW/Partly Cloudy /BP 30.10
High Tide 4:31pm
Low Tide 10:38am
During breakfast, Jim had to switch over the propane to tank two because tank one was empty. \240I cleaned the cabling top to bottom and we both got showers. \240😉
Left Captiva Island YC at 12:15pm with just a little bobble. \240I was the one driving this time. \240😳 I got stuck in the shallows trying to turn around in the channel. \240Jim got me out and we were on our way!
It was a pretty easy trip. \240This time I got pictures of the wreck on the beach we saw coming in the channel. \240This doesn’t give me warm fuzzies at all. \240Not sure if this happened during Hurricane Ian or if they just drove the boat into the shallows? \240My guess is that they anchored out during the storm and were washed onto shore and they just have not removed the vessels. \240Abandoned them. \240We read a lot about that sort of thing around here. \240There apparently is a real problem with squatters and homeless living on boats that have been abandoned. \240I read where one boat was a floating meth lab. \240 Law efforcement can’t keep up with it, so I’m told it’s a real problem. \240Mostly because the boats don’t have the proper waste management or fuel safety systems in place and they are leaking fuel and waste into the water. \240Yuck! \240Poor animals…
We entered the Okeechobee waterway about 2 hours into our journey and had the current working for us. \240We reached 6-7 knots at times! \240Woo hoo!
Once we made the turn into the Tarpon Point marina entrance though, the current was against us. \240Even so, the depths were good and we anchored at Glover Blight with no issues. \240There were 4 other boats in that hole, but we finally got our anchor set at 4:30pm. \240Watched a lovely sunset and headed down to dinner.
Dinner was leftover spaghetti, which I turned into a lasagna casserole with leftovers.
Day 47 (Thursday)
48-69 Degees/ Wind 5 kts NE/ clear day and will warm up a bit this afternoon.
BP 30.17/ Low Tide 12:58pm/High Tide 6:53pm
Breakfast was a strata made from leftover eggs, potatoes, sausage, cheese, and assorted veggies. \240I love cooking this way! \240No recipe…just creating with what we have. \240It can be a gamble, but with these ingredients, it’s hard to go wrong. \240I just wish I had more eggs. \240And I didn’t have any milk or cream. \240But…it should be awesome!
Putting this baby in the oven!
After breakfast I can’t say I did anything productive. \240Jim dug through all the storage lockers in the settees and took inventory of all spare parts and supplies.
Just enjoying the morning.
Left Glover Bight at 1:15pm and headed toward the St. Charles Yacht club. \240It was easy getting out there. \240The depths were pretty good. \240Real deep in some places, 1-2ft under the keel in others. \240We were assigned a slip and also staying there until the 12th so Jim can work on repairs. \240We arrived and docked at 2:15pm.
We got a full pump out, filled water fresh water tank and topper the fuel tank as well. \240 The Dockmaster, Andre, is a real nice guy. \240He hails from South Carolina…but his accent sounds very Cajun. \240He was super helpful. \240A+ for the Dockmaster.
I took Lucy for a walk and explored the surrounding area. \240Later she decided to hop off the boat and hop on and sit on the neighbors boat. \240She is sneaky that way. \240All I had to do was tell her it was dinner time and she got right off. \240I’m sneaky too! \240😼
We went for a nice swim in the pool after securing the boat; showered after. \240Then it was a nice dinner at the bar in the club lounge. \240There was a guy singing and playing his guitar. \240His set of songs were from our playlist, so we really enjoyed it. \240We met some nice club members. \240One was the owner of the monstrous 130 foot yacht parked behind the club. \240I forget their names now…really interesting people. \240The man made his way in the world digging holes and building wells. \240It’s something called inversion drilling. \240Really interesting. \240(See link)https://floridadep.gov/water/aquifer-protection/content/uic-wells-classification
He developed the machinery and method and made a killing digging all over Florida and the eastern seaboard. \240His wife (of six years) owns and manages 6 restaurants on Captiva Island; is self made as well. \240She also just bought Useppa Island. \240This island is part of a chain of islands owned by the family that runs and owns Cabbage Key Inn and Marina. \240We stayed there about a week ago.
Anyway, nice chat with them. \240Also chatted with a couple from South Dakota who sat and ate with us a the bar. \240He is a past commodore of the club and was a wealth of information. \240She was very friendly too. \240Jim was very popular with the wealthy old ladies. \240 I’m leaving him for a week so this should be interesting. \240😂
Back to the boat….same old same ol’. \240I am thankful we are in a quiet harbor.
The boat, DRILLER, is own by the fella who drills wells. \240
Sunset in St Charles Harbour. \240
Day 48 (Friday)-Day 56 (Saturday)
I am lumping all the details in this one journal entry because we have been in one place since Feb 2.
Pics of St Charles Yacht Club
Bocce Ball courts
Shuffle Board courts
Tennis Courts
Heated Pool
Isn’t she purdy???
Capt Jim at the wheel!
Staying at the St Charles YC in Ft. Myers. \240Since we arrived, I went home from Feb 3-9. \240I had doctor appointments and had to play the piano for Lewis School. \240The drive and trip was uneventful, except to say that when I got home I had to remember where I put everything in the new kitchen. \240I felt just a little out of sorts. \240🙃. \240 I split the drive up into two days up and back. \240I stayed at Mallorie’s each time and it was nice to be able to just pop in and see the grandkids on a semi regular basis.
I was just able
Back on the boat….
While I was in FWB, Jim stayed on the boat with the animals. \240Lucy has definitely adapted well to marina living. \240She will get off the boat, do a bit of wandering and then come back. \240Ricky has laid her 3rd, and we “hope” her final egg. \240Once she is done laying it will be 3 weeks of her sitting on her nest chittering away waiting for babies that will never arrive. \240Fred is her ever vigilant guard and just sits with her. \240He has to be bored out of his goard! (Sp) \240He does come out and join us when there is food, but mostly he just sit with her and poops in her water dish. \240🤷♀️
But seriously…Jim has been working on many things while I was away.
1. \240We had a marine electrician over to fix the battery charging issue. \240He worked only on the generator and was able to get the batteries charging on generator power. \240Woot! \240He said the issue was with the governor of the generator. \240It was sticking and would increase the RPM and the frequency of the output and would not come back down. \240He freed it up and tested it and it worked. \240He suggested that Jim change the oil, because the cleanliness of the oil might be a factor.
2. \240Jim changed the oil and filter (motor only) and just the oil in the generator. \240They were due.
3. \240Changed the fresh water filter, and the seagul filter.
4. \240Polished most of the stainless. \240The boat is so shiny.
5. We went to the U-HAUL and filled one tank of propane.
6. Jim also found the external water filter that attaches to the garden hose that fills the fresh water tank on the boat. \240We have been looking for that since Day 1.
We went to Wally World and provisioned for the long trip to the Keys. \240I didn’t have a really long list because I was able to get many of the dry provisions at the commissary back home. \240This save some money. \240Prices for food here are high. \240While I was home, I made freezer meals and delivered them in a cooler with dry ice. \240Worked great! \240The meals were rock hard still when I arrived 2 days later at the boat.
We went to eat Feb 9 (Friday) at Bonita Bills Waterfront Cafe. \240Food was ok. \240Large fish and shrimp portions, piddley sides. \240Great view under the Matansas Pass bridge and we saw the lights of the masts in the mooring field.
Saturday (Feb 10) I was sick most of the day with one of my bad migraines. \240Jim had to return the rental car. \240Later on, after I was feeling better, we worked on planning the next leg of our trip. \240Jim was able to secure us a dockage at the Boca Chica Marine on NAS Key West. \240This is exciting! We will stay there for a week or two. \240We are finally going to the Keys! \240While he did that I researched Key West and bike rentals and places to go and things to do.
I started some large item laundry and we went for a swim. \240Then showers and a nice hot dinner. \240It’s been a very productive week.
Day 57 (Sunday)
It’s Super Bowl Sunday. \240Not that we are following, but I am guessing the club will be busy tonight. \240We will see.
It rained some this morning. \240The boat needed a wash, so that’s good. \240🌧️ \240Very cloudy and grey. \240Temp is 67.
Right now, our plan is to head out very early Wednesday morning and make our way to the Boca Chica Marina in the Keys. \240The trip will take us approximately 26 hours. \240We have a good weather and wind window to make this journey. \240We had planned to leave a day earlier, but the winds would be 10-20 knots from the NW. \240Not the best option. \240Wednesday forecast is better at this point. \240We will keep checking as we get closer, but for now that is the plan.
On Wednesday, the tide at the Sanibel Pass is going out until 8:43am. \240So in order to take advantage of the current, we will need to leave the dock here no later than 7:00am. \240The pass is just around the corner and should not take that long to get through. \240The current can run up to 5 knots in the pass and we do not want to be on the wrong side of that! \240We also plan to arrive at the northern side of the Key West inlet at sun up. \240This would allow us to navigate in the daylight and not the night.
Jim worked on packing up the ditch bag, attaching the lights on all the life vests and inspecting the safety equipment. \240We both looked at options for getting around Key West. \240I spent time contacting various bike rentals and scooter rentals etc…. I also looked at what there is to do in Key West while we are there.
We went for a swim and had tacos for dinner and strawberry shortcake for dessert. \240We DID watch the Super Bowl. \240I personally did not have a team or stake in the game, but it was a good game. \240Kansas City Cheifs won in overtime. \240Pretty impressive performance by both teams, but especially the KC quarter back.
Day 58 (Monday)
Temp was in the mid 70’s. \240Damp in the morning, but dried up nicely during the day. \240Winds were picking up and it stayed that way throughout the day.
We got a couple of bikes out today with the intent to ride to Ft. Myers Beach but Jim’s bike was not comfortable so he decided not to make the trek. \240I had a very comfortable cruiser and did bike a bit today. \240The only problem was that the bike was stuck in 6th gear and the wind, at times, we pretty strong. \240I rode for about 3 miles or so and just came home.
We both puttered around the boat, at lunch and then put the dinghy up on the foredeck in preparation for our trip Wednesday morning. \240
We both took a nice swim and shower. \240Then it was dinner, digest and bed. \240Tomorrow is cleaning day!
Day 59 (Tuesday)
Temp 56-71/ Winds 10-19 kts NW/ Partly cloudy-Sunny
BP 30/ 81% humidity
A nice day…again. \240😎
Today is laundry day and cleaning day in preparation to leave. \240I also will place one last Instacart before we leave.
Made banana nut muffins and bread.
All is ready as can be expected for the trip. \240We took one last swim, had a great lunch and light dinner. \240 Digest, TV, bed. \240Early morning.
Day 60 (Wednesday)
Ash Wednesday AND Valentine’s Day.
Temp 51/ Weather clear/ 88% Humidity/ Tide heading out until 11:00am
Low tide as I type.
Winds 9kts NE/ BP 30.15
It should be a nice day to get out of Ft Myers.
We left the dock at 7:25am. \240Promptly got stuck IN the channel at 7:43am. \240Towed out by TowBoatUS at 8:55am. \240I hope the rest of the trip is uneventful. \240😳. While we waited, I made our breakfast of pancakes with peanut butter and banana and I turned on YouTube and watched Ash Wednesday Mass. \240At least I was able to get my holy day of obligation fulfilled. \240🙏
Our hero of the day
We made it under the Sanibel Causeway Bridge at 9:50am. \240Current was going out and in our favor, thankfully. \240We raised the jib at 10:17am as we entered San Carlos Bay. \240By 10:22am we were sailing under the jib only and speeding along at 5.2 knots. \240At 10:52am we raised the main up to the 2nd reef. \240Winds dropped at 11:33amd and Jim messed around trying the rig the whisker pole on the jib to allow for a better purchase on the wind. \240We set our course at about 197 and headed dead down wind. \240We ended up having to start the engine at 1:15pm because the wind had dropped to 2 knots. \240We put the jib away and throttled the engine up to maintain a speed of 5+knots. \240We ate lunch (chicken salad sandwiches, veggies and sweet pickele) and \240by 3:00pm, the wind was up and we throttled down, turned off the engine and had a quiet journey under the main alone. \240We maintained our speed of 5+knots.
At 5:15pm the wind shifted to the NW, and we altered course a bit to help us along. \240We picked up speed and at times were going over 6 knots. \240Sunset was at 6:16pm. \240Then the wind slacked off around 7:00pm and we limped along at 3+knots. \240By 8:00pm we were back up to 6.8knots!
We didn’t really have a shift schedule. \240We basically took turns driving and watching after 8pm. \240I would drive while Jim slept and until either I needed a break or I would need to pee. \240Jim drove while I “tried” to sleep. \240Or if I needed to get us something to eat or drink. \240In between our faithful crewmate “George” (the autopilot) would drive.
We tacked to a more easterly course at 8:30pm. \240The wind has shifted to the NW and this would get us back closer to our course line. \240Lesson learned here was never let George tack in the dark or under high wind. \240He lost his brain and the compasses were going wacky. \240I could not tell which direction to steer because all 3 compasses were saying something different. \240Anyway, it was a cluster of a tack and we eventually got it right and back under way. \240🙄🤷♀️.
I made dinner at 10:30pm (chicken Marsala) and it was nice to have a hot meal to get us through until morning. \240By midnight we were approximately outside of the Everglades and we no longer had cell coverage.
The moon followed us until it went down at 11:34pm. \240It was so far, a beautiful night to sail. \240Not a soul around for miles. \240Very quiet.
Log continues on next date entry.
You can’t tell in these shaky pictures, but it a waxing crescent (God’s thumbnail). \240Hard to take clear pictures on a rocking boat.
Day 61 (Thursday)
Journey continues. It’s pretty boring to re-tell at this point. \240Wind and seas were steady and strong. \240We eased the main and jib and We clipped along at 5+ knots until about 5:00am. \240At this point the wind had turned due east and come up significantly (12-16knkots) and we were clocking speeds at 6+ to 8+ knots.
We entered the northwest channel inlet of Key West under full sail at 9:00am.
Entering the NW channel. \240I may have said NE channel on the video. \240(Sleep deprived lol)
At 10:45am we dropped all sails just before entering the south side of Key West. \240Once the sails were down we turned east and pounded against the hard waves and wind blowing directly in our face! \240
First glimpse of Key West. \240This is Truman Annex, Ft Zachary Taylor Park.
We arrived at Boca Chica Marina on NAS Key West at 1:00pm. After getting some help securing the boat from some the “locals” (Will and Mike), we went to the cafe for lunch. \240Then it was back to the boat for a nap. \240I zonked out HARD and so did Jim. \240He woke me at 6:00pm and I limped over to the showers to wake up. \240After a bit of puttering and light reading, I was so tired that I did not eat dinner and went straight back to bed. \240Jim stayed up a bit longer and joined me. \240Both of us were exhausted but happy to finally be here in KEY WEST! \240
BIG Tarpon under our dock…right next to the boat.
Sunset at Boca Chica Marina
Day 62 (Friday)
Today’s forecast
NAS Key West is a very noisy place! \240Lots of jet noise on the runway, which BTW, is right next to the marina. \240This noise goes on all day long. \240I could care less yesterday, I was so tired. \240Lucy does not like it all!! \240Every time the jets roar, she runs back into the boat or someplace to hide.Lucy is doing great, the birds are doing great. \240The people here are friendly and we can let Lucy loose while we are here at the dock and no one seems to mind. \240She likes having a bit of freedom and does not go too far. \240She met up with a nice dog and didn’t even care! \240She is just so sweet!
The flight line on NAS Key West, Boca Chica
This morning we were picked up by a taxi and taken to pick up our rental car. \240(Thank you Meghan…again!). They upgrade our ride…not sure why…and it’s nice to have wheels to get around. \240We decided to just drive around until we wanted to park somewhere and walk. \240We drove to the Truman Waterfront Park. \240We walked around the area where the cruise ships disembark and there is an old coastguard cutter, and amphitheater and the Ft Zachary Taylor. \240We went on a tour of the fort and it was really neat. \240We learned a lot about munitions from the civil war to WW1 and WW2. \240After that we went to lunch at the Key West Yacht Club. \240Lunch was great. \240After lunch we headed back to the boat for a much needed nap…that did not happen. \240Grrrr (see note on jet noise) 🙄
Roosters and chickens everywhere at Truman Waterfront Park.
Cruise ships disembark here.
Coast Guard cutter museum.
Some snaps of Fort Zachary Taylor.
This guy was really working! \240He was making the links on this chain and some other things when we walked over to talk to him.

Ft Zachary Taylor Beach
Atlantic needlefish….all over the marina.
Since I couldn’t nap I started some dinner early so it could cool. \240(Tuna salad and veggies)
After dinner we went to the Navigators bar at the Marina, had some drinks and met some former F14 pilot/backseaters Navy buddies from back in the day. \240Brian and Linda are staying on the same dock as we are.
Afterward, we headed back to the boat, had dinner, digested and watched some TV, then off to bed.
Day 63 (Saturday)
Today’s conditions. \240Feels a lot hotter.
Cleaned up the salon and bathroom and bedroom today. \240 We registered with the MWR office and found out that birds were restricted. \240oops! \240Well, Jim did not tell them that we had birds, so hopefully we will “fly” under the radar and not get caught. \240🤷♀️🦜 And as expected, cats should be on a leash when off the boat. \240So, we will have to really watch Lucy as well. \240Ugh.
Anyway, we didn’t really do much today except have lunch and head into town. \240We walked around Duval Street…people watched and ended up having some cool refreshment at a place called The Grand Vin. \240Jim tried the blonde ale and I got a Frose`. \240Afterwards we had just enough time to walk to Mass at St Mary, Star of the Seas Catholic Church. \240It was the shortest Mass ever! \240We went home for dinner and of course bed. \240It was hot so we ran the AC and we were very comfortable.
Day 64 (Sunday)
Today’s conditions
We woke up a little later than usual today. \240We are going to get rain, so we just enjoyed sleeping in. \240After I made coffee I wanted to go walk about the marina and look at the boats. \240We met some of the people staying here. \240We also read into Mike and Barbara the loopers we met early in our cruise down the ICW. \240(from Pelican Bay…kite boarder). We chatted with them for some time and will probably get together with the later. \240They have been here since the beginning of the month.
View from our boat. \240We are on C Dock…last dock.
Isn’t that a beeeeeuuuuutiful boat??!!😍
Back on the boat…we had egg Benedict for breakfast again. \240Yummy! \240The rest of the day will be waiting out the rain. \240I plan on reading, playing my uke…maybe a movie and just relaxing.
We hung out on the boat. \240Watched Oppenheimer and then walked down to the Navigator Pub to have some late lunch. \240Rain had slacked a bit. \240We had a nice lunch and played Yahtzee. \240Then back to the boat again. \240I played some uke and watched some tv. \240Then bed. \240Just a lazy day.
Day 65 (Monday)
Presidents Day Holiday
Today’s conditions
We didn’t do much in the morning. \240Jim utilized the portable pump out and pump out the waste tank. \240It turned out to be easier that we though it would be.
Lazy morning. \240All souls up top enjoying the sunshine…except Ricky (still on the nest).
After breakfast we waited on the boat until the weather and clouds blew off, then we went out to find the commissary on base. \240We spotted a guy getting ready to foil and kite on Sigsbee NAS. \240Jim talked to the guy’s wife and found out it is a pretty good spot to kite. \240So, if conditions are right…we might be back tomorrow.
In the meantime, we went back to KW proper and parked on the southern most end of town, parked (with a bit of trouble) and went to lunch at the “Seaside Cafe Southernmost Mansion”. \240Everything here is “southernmost” so the names of places gets confusing. \240🫤
Mama hen and her chicks.🐥
The bathroom is located between a reeeaaaallly skinny alley.
Our view at lunch. \240
Yup, you guessed it! \240A pigeon.
We walked down to Mallory Square on the far north side of town (1.7 miles) and I had some wonderful Cuban coffee and we watched a juggling act. \240I did some trinket shopping and then we walked back to the car.
The entrance to Mallory Square. \240Originally and supply depot and storehouse for the Navy and Coast Guard.
It is now a series of shops with booths of wares from local artisans.
This building is the oldest brick structure in Key West.
Where do I begin??🤷♀️😎🎶
Had to be Jim under this sign…lol
A really cool Kapok tree!
Back on the boat we relaxed and watched the rest of the sunset, went below and relaxed some more until bed. Another gorgeous day.
Day 66 (Tuesday)
Today’s conditions.
Not much going on today so Jim decided to start on the cleaning and restaining the teak. My back has been bothering me so I just did what I could. \240I did manage to make bread pudding from leftover old bread. \240It turned out great!
I had to try it right away! \240😊
It turned out perfectly.
I met a couple that knows Pat and Dave Tye. \240Their names are Damaris and Kelly Edwards. \240They were camping at Sigsbee and decided to buy a condo and now live here in Key West. \240They just come to the marina for the beach and bar. \240In fact, it seems a lot of people like to just come here to socialize. \240Saw Green Iguana in the trees and a Green Heron came over the say hi at the boat.
Damaris and Kelly Edwards
Jim got the port side trim stained and it is turning out to be a pretty big job. \240Time will tell.
I walked around the marina today and took a few snaps of the amenities and places to hang out here.
The office, bathrooms, showers, laundry etc…
Boats in the mooring field
Navigators Pub and Sunset Cafe
The beach
Day 67 (Wednesday)
Today’s conditions
Yesterday I started getting a pain in my back. \240No amount of walking and stretching was doing anything for it. \240I finally took some Motrin and rubbed down with deep blue. \240Woke up this morning and it is still there. \240I am hoping that with some movement and more TLC it will just go away. \240I am seriously continplating a massage. (Did not get a massag BTW)
I ended up doing some laundry while Jim worked on cleaning the teak. \240Then after lunch we went to Home Depot and the commisary. Came back to enjoy the sunset and dinner. \240
Day 68 (Thursday)
Late morning. \240Planning a new plan to leave for the Dry Tortugas. \240Weather is not looking good for us to go the week we planned (After March 1). \240We will work this out in the next couple of days.
In the meantime, we tore the boat apart getting gear sorted and dive equipment/stuff out so Jim could dive on the boat and clean the prop and bow thruster. \240We had some difficulty getting the hookah rig to work at first because there was a part (brass plug) missing from the hookah rig. \240It was leaking air. \240Once we worked out what was missing, we took a break to eat lunch at the cafe and then Jim went to Home Depot, got the part he needed, fixed the rig and then went in the water.
Meanwhile, I sat outside and tended the lines and was there to hand him whatever he needed. \240I had visit from a few iguana and a heron.
We put everything that we took out away, stowing some things that we would not need immediately and then settled down to relax while the sun went down. Dinner was leftover curry. We were both tired so we went to bed pretty much after dinner.
Day 69 (Friday)
It was a warm, humid day today. We rented a few bikes (Sunshine Scooters) https://sunshinescootersinc.com/ and rode around the north part of town. \240We visited the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum. \240This place housed historical artifacts from treasure hunts and slave ships that were found off the Florida Keys. \240Very interesting tour and well worth the time to go see. https://www.melfisher.org/
Afterwards we were thirsty and hungry and went to a little alley cafe, called Lucy’s Cafe, for lunch. \240We then rode bikes around a bit to see some of the sites. \240We settled on one more tour at the Hemingway House. \240Once again, a good choice. \240Very informative and an interesting look at the life of an great American writer. \240The cats were cute too!
Lucy’s Cafe…in a little alley off the Main Street
We did not tour here, but maybe next time. \240Nice neighborhood!
Picture says it all. \240
From there we took a break and had coffee and key lime pie at Blue Heaven…recommended by the Hemingway House guide. \240It was very good and the meringue was about 6 inches high!
His name is Rock Hudson.
Meet Babe Ruth…notice the toes!
Hemingway’ a last red cent. \240Funny story about his 2nd wife.
Writing studio. \240Apparently it was left exactly as he kept it.
Delicious Key Lime Pie…and coffee…of course!
Riding back was a bit tricky for Jim and when we got home we patched him up and had our first Sundowners of out trip with a couple we met earlier in our trip. \240I forgot to get pictures of them. Mike and Barbara Bruhn. \240They are loopers. \240Their blog is in the link below.https://jackiebiiigoingloopy.blogspot.com/
Too tired to cook and too late, so we had PBJ sandwiches and eventually went to bed. \240We put the air conditioner on tonight…very humid!
Day 70 (Saturday)
After a rainy morning, Jim went kiteboarding with Mike Bruhn out to Marvin Key area. \240I hung out with Barbara. \240We went \240to lunch at Stoned Crab. \240It was just okay. \240Then to the BX, the commisary and Publix. \240After shopping we unpacked our provisions and I started dinner. \240We were able to get in a short walk until the boys got back. \240We all enjoyed a lovely dinner and evening of Bison stew and salad. \240
Tortoise at Stoned Crab/Ibis Resort in Key West
The start of a yummy dinner. \240I did not get the cooked pics because we were so hungry that we tucked in fast before I could snap one!
Lovely and lively conversation as we made new friends on the water. \240Another perfect day. \240All were tired and it was easy to just go to bed.
Day 71 (Sunday)
Today’s conditions
We both woke up and got moving this morning for another day in Key West. \240We went to 9:00am mass. \240The same priest was saying Mass and it was the shortest homily ever! \240Again! \240The church was packed. \240Afterward, I visited the church store and picked up some medal, rosaries and holy cards for gifts. \240Then we walked to breakfast. \240We found a nice place to eat called Sarabeth’s. \240The food was fantastic but expensive. \240That place is definitely a do-over.
Mimosas!
Best bacon ever!
Lobster omelette
After breakfast we decided to take the CONCH TRAIN. \240This is a hop on, hop off tourist train that takes you around the Duval Loop. \240You can ride it all day and hop off at strategic spots; do some shopping, eating, drinking or museum visits. \240Then just hop back on to the next destination. \240It was relaxing and fun.
We visited the Flagler Sail to Rail Museum; Interesting bit of history of the railroad that is now US Highway A1A. \240We did some trinket shopping at Mallory Square, had some coffee and walked around looking at the sites of the waterfront and beyond. \240It was a nice day.
This reminded me of Meghan and Josh and Sunday dinners.
Oldest house in Key West. \240
I had to snap this one for Fred.
“Somewhere…at the end of the Rainbow!”🌈🎶
Once we made it back to the boat we were pooped. \240Jim relaxed a bit while I started the process of making strawberry shortcake. \240We got a sunset sundowner invite from our now “good” friends, the Bruhns, and we huddled down to their boat before the sun got away from us. \240We met some new friends, Mike and Patty Loehlitz. \240They are staying at the slip right next to the Bruhn’s. \240They have a Gemini catamaran named BLUE HERON. \240Nice folks. \240 Mike was a embassy security type guy before he retired. \240We have plans to go with them to one of the cigar shops in town. \240Apparently Mike is quite versed in cigar knowledge and it will be helpful when picking out cigars for gifts.
Anyway, back on the boat we put kids to bed and had a bit of dinner and of course strawberry shortcake. \240Maybe too much….lol
Day 72 (Monday)
Today’s conditions
Today was a work day on the boat. \240Jim spent several hours diving to clean the bottom of the boat. \240My job is basically to sit and tend, just in case he needs anything. \240But mostly I just sit around and read and take pictures of the animals I see. \240Here is what I saw today. \240One injured pelican. \240I think he was maybe a juvenile…he seemed stunned and had some blood on his chest. \240He let me get really close to him. \240Eventually he flew off, albeit wabbley…but he did eventually leave. \240I also saw a lion fish. \240It was creepy how it hung around the piling and felt it’s way around with its fins(?). \240Anyway, it was pretty cool. \240Of course the tarpon, needlefish and iguanas were out. \240I really tried to get a picture of the vultures flying right above us but they were just too quick. No manatee yet…but maybe before we leave. \240I’m hoping.
Lion fish
Some sort of sponge that grows on the ladder. \240I picked it up and my hand was itching for about an hour.
Day 73 (Tuesday)
Conditions today
We drove to Marathon today. \240Nothing really newsworthy the see. \240A typical tourist beach town. \240 We did see the 7 mile bridge and some nice beach scenery. \240We ate at Lazy Days South. \240Food was pretty good. \240Nothing spectacular. \240But the view was beautiful. \240Right on the one of the Boot Key channels. \240Afterward we drove to the Marathon Yacht Club to scope it out and see what kind of marina they have. \240This YC is more like the one at home. \240Small and friendly. \240The slips are in deep water. \240One thing though…they really pack the boats in tight!!
Some old railway and car bridge we saw on our way to Marathon.
New bridge
When we got back to the boat the kids were missing us. \240The jets had been roaring all day. \240Lucy was not interested in joining us outside at all! \240Ricky and Fred on the other hand were happy to hang out all night if we let them.
We ate at the cafe. \240It was taco Tuesday. \240The food was really good! \240We saw Patty and Mike outside grilling and we joined them for staggered conversation around the jet noise. \240We decided that was too much to handle and went home to have strawberry shortcake, digest and then head to bed. \240It’s a warm night.
Day 74 (Wednesday)
Today is laundry day and Jim is finishing up cleaning the bottom of the boat. \240We had lunch at the cafe and Later that day we started taking out and laying out the anchor chain and marking the lengths of the chain in intervals. \240This is so that Jim will know how much chain he laid out when setting the anchor alarm. \240He got it started, but will finish tomorrow.
Very late dinner tonight.
Much hotter today.
Saw these two cool iguana on my trek to the laundry.
Day 75 (Thursday)
Leap Day!! \240
Feels a lot hotter already.
Since we went to bed late, we woke up late. \240Breakfast was egg muffins and applesauce. \240Ricky wasn’t sure about applesauce at first, but then because I was eating it, she thought she should. \240Soon she was all up in everyone’s breakfast! \240It is good to have this silly little girl back.
Ricky trying applesauce for the first time.
Jim finished tagging the anchor chain and I cleaned the litter box. \240We went to the dive shop, commissary and BX and Publix. \240We put dive gear away and started cleaning up the boat for our next passage. \240I secured dockage at Davis Island YC but also put in a request for Clearwater YC. \240We are hoping to get Clearwater YC since it is closer to Panama City. \240I am waiting to hear back from them.
I made veggie lasagna for dinner and freezer meals and started prep on tuna noodle salad. \240We ate, digested and turned the air on for bed. \240The temps are definitely getting warmer…even at night.
Day 76 (Friday)
1st day of March!
Today we are pumping out, filling the water tank and cleaning the cockpit. \240I will prep more food for our departure tomorrow. \240If the weather goes as planned, we will head to the Marquesas to anchor at either Boo Boo or Tin tin Key.
In the meantime, we are heading back to town to join Patty and Mike P for lunch at Fogarty’s. \240Really good food. I had the grilled mahi sandwich and it was outstanding! \240We also went to sample and buy Rum at the First Legal Rum Distillary and then bought some cigars at the Greene Street Cigar Lounge.
We stopped to get our propane filled and stopped at Publix for a few last minute provisions.
After a short nap, we went to the beach to watch the sunset and have one more sundowner visit with Patty and Mike before departing tomorrow.
Dinner tonight was tuna noodle salad. \240🥗
Day 77 (Saturday)
Today’s conditions
More in depth forecast and info
Had an early morning. Dropped rental car off. Got boat ready to leave. Met with Barbara and Mike and said goodbye. Leaving Key West and heading toward the Marquesas. \240It’s been a wonderful trip but I am looking forward to doing some snorkeling and diving.
The whole boat family!
L-R Mike and Barbara Bruhn, Fred above, Jim, Ricky, Me and Lucy!
I saw this as I was walking past….parrot fish of some sort! \240Super cool.😎
Left Boca Chica Marina at 11:11am. \240The exit was clean and uneventful…thank goodness! \240After we left the channel the trip west was pretty rolly and it stayed this way most of the way to the anchorage. \240We put the jib up right after we left the Boca Chica channel. \240This helped us maintain a steady 5-6knots of wind. \240But, we had to use the motor the whole way. \240The birds did great, but Lucy mostly slept the whole way. \240I gave her something to help relax her. \240She really doesn’t like the rocky and rolling. \240Jim and I swapped the helm off and on throughout the trip. \240We had to really watch for crab pots…they were everywhere. \240 We did not see any wild life, which was disappointing. \240However, we DID see Man O War jellies. \240They look like water bottles floating in the water, and they are about that size too! \240Kind of scary to know that they are out there and we could accidentally swim up into one of those. \240That could really hurt!😳
We ate lunch around 2pm. \240We arrived at Boo Boo Key and anchored easily at 5:24pm. \240The sunset was a non event. \240I will have to see what the sunrise brings. \240It’s cloudy so there were also no stars. \240Bummer. \240Dinner was veggie lasagna and salad. \240Not cellular so we are just spending a nice quiet evening reading and journaling. \240Tomorrow is Sunday and we are taking the dinghy out to explore the key. \240
Day 78 (Sunday)
I got up early enough to catch the sunrise. \240
Sunrise in the Marquesas.
Ran generator because the batteries were drained. \240After breakfast we got the dinghy off the deck and into the water. \240This took some time but we finally went exploring Tin tin Key at 11:42am. \240When we beached the dink, we walked along the beach. \240It was mostly broken up shell and very soggy. \240Not the firm sand we are used to. \240I was surprised to see that the beach was very trashy. \240It had old broken crab traps, dried up sponges, old nylon rope, a chair. \240There was a stern from a boat and lots of debris. \240We think it might be stuff that has washed up from storms etc. \240?? \240Not really sure. \240But either way, there was not much to see except a lot of pelican, a skimmer and sandpipers. \240We did not see one turtle. \240🐢
We did take the dinghy around inside the Marquesas into Mooney harbor but once again….not much to see. \240It was also really overcast and the water was dark and grey looking. \240Not as pretty as when we arrived yesterday. \240Oh well…
A cool skimmer
A very rare sighting of the Marquesas Gnome. \240
Boo Boo and Tin Tin Key
We had a wonderful hot dinner, played some cards and scrabble and watched a beautiful sunset. \240And believe it or not, Jim really saw the green flash! \240He has been a doubter but is now a believer. \240No picture so I just have to take his word for it. \240We played cards and scrabble until we were ready to bed. \240
Gin rummy. \240Jim won three games out of three.
I won.
Day 79 (Monday)
We both got up early this morning, ate breakfast, and were on our way to the Dry Tortugas by 8:15 AM. We motor-sailed the whole way, occasionally using the jib. We were basically heading downwind the whole day. The water was beautiful, the sky was clear, and the temperature was mild. It was a perfect day for a sail. Once again, though, did not see much wildlife. We did, however, see several man of war jelly fish and lots of crab traps. It was like going through minefield.
Man O War jellyfish. \240Looks like a floating water bottle.
We made good time and caught our first glimpse of the Dry Tortugas about 3:00pm. \240
Our first view of Fort Jefferson.
This is the west side of the fort.
We anchored on the east side and were secure by 3:50pm. \240It was a busy anchorage with about 5 or 6 boats anchored near us. \240We were just outside the Ferry dock and the seaplanes were coming in and out until 5:00pm. \240We saw this one seaplane almost hit a sailboat. \240I unfortunately did not get that on video. \240The birds here are really loud. The Brown Noddy and the Sooty tern are migratory occupying Bush Key and it’s nesting season. \240The key is off limits to humans right now so all I could get was a video. \240There are also frigate birds soaring and diving around the north side of the fort. \240They are quite impressive.
Rangers taking down the flag.
Seaplane taking off
Brown noddy and Sooty terns on Bush Key. \240We are anchored right behind them and they are really loud!
Frigate birds.
We were hot from the sail and the water was so beautiful that we got into our swimsuits and jumped into the water to see what we could see. \240The water was refreshing and there were fish all around our boat. \240That evening we played a game of scrabble and were so tired that we just had strawberry shortcake for dinner. \240
Day 80 (Tuesday)
We got up early, nice and refreshed. \240I was able to catch a beautiful sunrise just over Bush Key.
Today’s adventure is to explore the fort. \240
Dinghy beach.
Frigate bird
Lighthouse
Front of fort Jefferson
Loggerhead Key in the distance
After lunch we went snorkeling along the west wall. \240Not the most impressive wild life, but fun just the same. \240It did give me the chance to try out my new waterproof underwater camera case. \240Here are a few of the snaps I managed to get of coral and fish.
Jim in the 💦
First pipe I came to had this cute little fish. \240
Pretty coral
Damselfish hiding from me!
Some sort of crab
Anchor
After snorkeling we got the boat ready for some weather that we could see off in the distance. \240Another lovely sunset. \240Sadly no green flash. \240Lots of boat tonight in the anchorage. \240 Dinner was hamburger and green beans. \240Both of us were very tired that we just sat and read until bed. \240
Helicopter passing by was tonight’s entertainment..
Day 81 (Wednesday)
We both were up early. \240It rained last night and it was hard to sleep with all the rocking and rolling. \240Jim did not hear the storm at all….just felt the rocking. \240For some reason I could hear everything! \240Go figure…. Anyway, a lovely sunrise and coffee in the cockpit was a great way to start the day. \240Even Lucy was enjoying the view. \240😊
Conditions today: \240Partly cloudy, very humid. \24078-80degrees. \240Light wind.
After some chores, we left the boat on the dinghy about 11:30am to try to find the live coral bed that the park ranger said we could swim on. \240As luck would have it….or I should say we had no luck.🍀. The day was cloudy and it was hard to see anything. \240So, we decided to go to the dock and check the weather report and then to the ferry boat to get ice for our sail away from here tomorrow. \240No weather report yet, so back to the boat for lunch. \240We decided we would explore the north coal docks when the sun came out.
About 3:00pm we got back in the dink to head to the beach. \240The ferry was just leaving and the work boat was arriving, as well as the seaplanes coming and going. \240It was a busy time. \240But the good news was that we had the swim beach to ourselves. \240It was a much better place to see fish and coral, but unfortunately my camera did not pick up as many good pictures because the day was so cloudy. \240I did manage to get a few…and it you look closely at the last one, you will see the outline of a barracuda. \240I save this blurry shot to prove I saw it. \240And if truth be told, he saw me and I got really close to him before I realized what I was looking at! \240😳
North coal docks
Sooty terns and Noddy terns on top of old pilings
Barracuda 😝
The day ended with our last Dry Torts sunset. \240We sat and watched the day end and the night begin. \240Not feeling like dinner, I made Jim a PBJ sandwich and I had a bowl of popcorn for dinner. \240Early morning tomorrow….heading north and back in the direction of home.
Day 82(Thursday)
Heading out today after breakfast. \240Conditions are sunny, light winds out of the SE. \240Temps are the same. \240High 70’s and low 80’s. \240Our destination is Boca Grande Pass and Pelican Bay. \240It will take us 27 hours.
Left Dry Tortugas at 8:56am. \240We motorsailed the entire way. \240Since the winds were from the south, the jib only helped a little.
At 10:44am we had a visit from a pod of dolphin. \240So cool!
The only boats we saw were large commercial fishing boats.
The water at times was dead calm. \240But with the Jib, we were able to maintain our speed.
Lunch was chicken salad sandwiches and apply.
At 4:00pm we had a purple martin hitchhike along part of our route.
We dumped the waste tank at 4:15pm and Jim rigged the Jack lines. \240The wind shifted out of the north. \240This was not expected. \240But with this came more speed so we changed to a more north west tack. \240We later adjusted course when it was light.
Dinner was veggie lasanga at about 9:00pm. \240We ate in shifts so we could sit at the table while the other took the helm and watch.
Day 88 (Friday)
Continued from yesterday. \240Still heading the Pelican Bay. \240We took turns sitting at the helm. \240Jim was able to sleep, but I could not.
The day was monotonous and uneventful. \240I was thankful for the calm sea state and no rain! \240We ate as we could. \240Just here and there.
Sunrise over the Gulf of Mexico
Sleeping Beauties
Once we were in range of Boca Grande, we started to pick up cellular. \240We made it to Pelican Bay at 1:15pm. \240As soon as we anchored we set about planning the rest of the week and where we would be staying and/or anchoring. \240With this done it was time for a short nap, dinner and off to bed. \240Tomorrow we are heading to Palm harbor Marina for a much needed rest.
Day 89 (Saturday)
Today’s conditions
Left for Palm Harbor Marina at 10:45am. \240We had to wait for the tide to come in to get us off the bottom. \240Once the bottom was not stuck we were able to get away but the bottom was muddy and sticky and the wind was blowing hard. \240But we made it and were off!
Just a note about this anchorage.
We were here in January and it was SO quiet and peaceful. \240Jim was able to kiteboard on the beach and that is where we met Barbara and Mike Bruhn.(Jackie B III loopers). Now, during Spring Break this place is like Crab Island! \240Very busy anchorage with boats of all types coming and going; Parking on the beach etc…. \240Lots of people watching.
We traveled the inside in the ICW due to the pending weather and wind. \240On our way there was a bit of excitement from what looked like a poker run of some sort. \240High speed racing with a helicopter following closely overhead. \240I wish I had videotaped it! \240Other than rude power boaters who have no manners, the trip was short and uneventful.
Arrived at Palm Harbor Marine at 1pm. \240Docking was easy, even though it was blowing in such a way that we did not dock as we wanted. \240This means that getting away tomorrow will be tricky.
We cleaned up the boat a bit. \240Jim defrosted the freezer. \240I took out a weeks worth of trash that we could not leave at the Dry Tortugas. \240Took Lucy for a walk. \240She was ready to get her paws on steady land. \240Around 4pm we walked to the little convenience store to get some takeaway meals for dinner the next couple of nights. \240We went for a swim and a soak in the hot tub. \240Got showers! \240(Yay!) I took Lucy for one more walk while the sun was setting.
We settled down for drinks and dinner and a bit of TV. \240Still lagging behind on our sleep schedule we both headed to bed soon after. \240😴
Note about the Marina:
They get and A+ in hospitality. \240Great heated pool and hot tub. \240Great help from the Dockmaster and dockhands. \240Showers, bathrooms and facilities were very clean. \240And the best thing was that there was hot water and plenty of water pressure. \240They have ice, gas and laundry facilities. \240All in all a nice place to get some rest, food and take care of necessities before heading the long way down the ICW. \240The downsides to this marina are that there is really nothing around here in regards to some thing to see or places to eat. \240(Except the store down the road) \240Also, the area still looks like it needs some attention from storm damage. \240But besides that….a great stop. \240
Day 90 (Sunday)
Today is daylight savings time. \240We sprang forward and took advantage of the rain to sleep in. \240My clock said 8:15am when I finally got up. \240🥱
Ate breakfast, watched YouTube Mass and generally got things ready for leaving. \240
This marina was a really nice “little” place to stop but they have a lot to offer. \240Really nice people running the place. \240Very clean. \240Best pool and hot tub on the trip. \240They have ice and laundry. \240I hope that they get their docks in better shape. \240It seems that the storm damage took out some of them so they are not a big marina. \240But it was one of the nice places we stayed at on this trip. \240
Today’s conditions.
Left Palm Harbour Marina 12:00pm on high tide and did not have any issues getting through the exit channel this time!😎👍. The was a little problem with the north wind, but we got off the dock without any problems and with a lot of help from the dock hands and a boat neighbor. \240
We motorsailed to the next stop. \240Day was easy and uneventful. \240Arrived in Cove Terrace Anchorage and successfully anchored at 5:42pm. \240Intel from a local told us to line up our entry to this anchorage with the big house with the columns. \240Well….it was not completely obvious, but there was a large house with columns, we lined up with that and parked the boat right in front of it with a foot of water under us at low tide. \240It worked perfectly. \240Great cell service so we could catch up on communication with friends and family. \240
Dinner, relax….snooze….bed! \240
Day 91 (Monday)
The day started out early. \240We left Cove Terrace anchorage just after sunrise at 7:31am. \240It was a nice day on the water. \240A little cold to start but warmed up by afternoon. \240The worst part of the trip was crossing Tampa Bay. But even that was not too bad. \240Just really choppy. \240We found that we were having issues with our AIS on the main helm. \240That will be a task for me to work out once we have good WI-FI.
Today’s conditions
We arrived at Clearwater YC and made anchor at 7:00pm because there was no way we were going to get on the dock tonight. \240We will find out where they want us in the morning. \240
Dinner was comfort food. \240Chicken Marsala and cauliflower mashed potatos. \240Delicious.
Day 92 (Tuesday)
Jim woke up earlier than me this morning. \240It got a bit cold and his back was hurting him. \240I just wanted to stay under the covers a little longer. \240🥶 😴
Today’s conditions
We lowered the dinghy and went to breakfast after getting the animals settled. \240We also checked in with the Dockmaster to see what dock we need to put the boat. \240We found out that we would not be able to move it until tomorrow. \240I spent most of my morning cleaning and packing stuff to take home. \240The cages and bird area needed some major attention. \240🙄
Later, we went for a walk along the beach front area. \240Mostly we were looking for the CVS pharmacy to pick up Jim’s prescription. \240Once we found it, we had to wait for them to get back from lunch. \240In the meantime we went to this ice cream place across the street and had the best ice cream I have ever had! \240It was called ICE and CREAM. \240It is a local joint and they make their own icecream. \240It was wonderful. \240We decided to take the Jolly Trolley back to the YC.
We had drinks with our dock neighbor, Darren and then went to dinner at an Italian restaurant called Cesare’s. \240 Good food, very popular. \240But expensive.
Dinghy return to the boat and the kids and settled down for my last evening on the boat.
Day 93 (Wednesday)
After breakfast we moved the boat to the dock, got it secured. \240Then I took Lucy for a walk. \240She made a friend. \240The dog is a service dog named Major that belongs to our dock neighbor Darren. \240Major was super sweet, but Lucy was not having anything to do with him.
Lucy and Major
I got picked up by the rental car place and got my van for the return trip home. \240I then went to pickup the Instacart order from Publix on the way home. \240Then we set about the process of loading the van. \240There ended up being plenty of room for the cages, the cat and all the stuff I was taking home with me. \240
I left Clearwater YC at 11:30am EST and made the trip home without any problems. \240The birds and cat traveled well. \240I stopped for gas once and fed them. \240Once I got to the Ponce DeLeo rest area she was ready to get out and go pee.
I made it home at 6:00pm and I told myself I was not going to unpack the van; I unpacked it anyway. \240The birds were a bit out of it when I finally got them settled. \240Lucy was very happy to be home. 🏠🦜🐈
Day 94 (Thursday)
Jim in Clearwater, me in FWB.
I met with Jim Bouressa at the Enterprise in Uptown Station to deliver the rental car to him and update the driver information.
In the meantime, later that evening Carson and Jim B arrived in Clearwater and so did Dave Vaughn. \240The boys had drinks and dinner at the club that evening.
Day 95 (Friday)
Jim and crew head home. \240They left Clearwater YC at 11:30am. \240I lost cell contact soon after that. \240
Day 96 (Saturday)
Made cell contact with Jim just off Carabelle about 3:26pm. \240He said they were doing fine. \240Winds were calm. \240
Day 97 (Sunday)
The boys made it to the ditch at sunrise and had a fairly calm and uneventful motorsail home. \240We greeted Jim and crew at the dock by 2:00pm just before it started to pour down rain. \240Joined the crew and welcoming committee for a drink on the back patio of good ol’ FWYC. \240Headed home to unpack the car and relax and unwind. \240WELCOME HOME Heron Now!! \24097 days on the water. \240A successful shakedown cruise. \240Can’t wait to plan our next adventure!
