Heading to Pompeii

Somehow these puppets make me think of Shannon…

Went to “Sin City” (Pompei) yesterday. Amazing, can’t believe how big and beautiful it must have been before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79ad.

Surprisingly, 75% of the people saw early warnings of the volcanic eruption, fled and survived. The others….the liquids in their heads boiled and exploded their scull caps in less than 15mins (temps in excess of 500degrees). The ash came at 700mph, and 19ft deep. The excavators found “moulds” of people in hardened ash, were the exact position of the individual who perished (and then decomposed) left a vacuum. Excavators poured cement in the vacuums, and were able to recreate their exact likeness.

The city had markets, baths, courts, temples, extravagant homes (for the few rich), bakeries, and many brothels (which were staffed by slaves, and were a favourite pastime for married men). Signs directing you to the brothel..

As well spictorial advertisements for choice of service…manyy of the sailor clientele did not speak Italian…

The people resembled modern day Sardinians, about 5”2”, dark complexion, many suffered a genetic mutation that caused obesity and excessive hariness, in addition to thickening of the skull (brow bone). Also, many suffered congenital syphilis….

Mount Vesuvius has historically erupted every 2000yrs or so….visit at your own risk…

A travel day today, heading by train to Rome to meet up with Andrew….

Dave’s favourite new car…

Chris’s favourite…
