Business class was nice
Enjoyed brunch with Amber, we sampled many dishes from a specialty matcha restaurant.
Then we visited a few artisan shops in the mall
This was a rainy day, so I spent as much of it indoors as I could.
Went to Suntory art museum. Photos inside were prohibited, but the exhibition was about insects and plants, + history of their presence in Japanese cultural life. I enjoyed it a lot!
Enjoyed Ramen in the basement of Roppongi Hills
Roppongi hills architecture
Then I went to the Mori art museum
Had a brief snack at Harbs
It was raining a lot, but I went to the Stairway of Success and climbed it. Met a cat!
Sent my luggage forward to Kanazawa (I’ll meet it again on Sept 9!) and got on a train to
Kurobe dam.
Lunch & bath at Mikurigaike onsen, Japan’s highest elevation natural onsen
Jigokudani (hell valley). Caldera with lots of volcanic gas! Intense smell of sulphur.
Climbed Mt Oyama!
At the top!
INSANE winds
On the way up, before entering the clouds…
It was too hot with my shell coat below the clouds, so I took it off temporarily
Shrine on the way
With Kagawa-san, my guide
This is what the “in the clouds” part looks like
It wasn’t even raining, this is water from being in the cloud!
Summit picture
Enjoyed bento at a lodge halfway down
Foggy!
Dinner at Tengudaira lodge
Yum!
Warm sake, only 6$ for the entire bottle. Delicious!
Enjoyed breakfast at Tengudaira before hopping on the Highland bus towards Bijodaira
Shomyo waterfall in the distance; Japan’s tallest waterfall at 350m
Bijosugi, a very old cedar with 10m circumference
The cable car from Bijodaira to Tateyama city
Vending machine coffee in Toyama while I wait for my Shinkansen to Kanazawa
I started my visit to Kanazawa with one of its three tea house districts, Higashi Chaya. Traditionally, these tea houses were run by geisha, so they feature prominently. Kanazawa is actually famous for the skill of its geishas.
Gold leaf is a signature art form of Kanazawa. But before becoming an artist, I enjoyed gold leaf as a gourmet at Hakuichi. They put gold leaf on top of soft serve ice cream.
Then I continued on to Kinpakuya Sakuda to participate in a gold leaf art workshop.
But of course, real art looks a bit different :P
I visited a shamisen shop, Fukushima Sangenten. They let you try the shamisen! I was able to learn the short song “Sakura Sakura”.
I went on a side-adventure to the temple district, Utatsuyama. It’s a very forested area, with several temples and shrines on a hill that overlooks the city.
On my way back to civilisation, I stopped by Asanogawa Enyukai Hall, which has a nice museum about geisha.
Checked in at Hotel Kanazawa Zoushi, and they gave me some dango + bath salt for tonight.
… then I had dinner at an okonomiyaki place nearby ^_^
I also did some laundry in the hotel bathtub & started re-packing my luggage for the next leg of my journey.
