Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre

Today we left Banff and headed to Jasper. Again a beautiful drive, the scenery changed constantly and it was more remote to drive through. We had a deer run out infront of us which Sam fortunately spotted in time. I then a saw some sort of bird of prey, which I now believe to be a Raven, holding a dead animal in its mouth. Later, as we got closer to our destination we saw a mountain goat.

On our way to Jasper we went to the Colombia Icefields Parkway.

It was obviously freezing but the views were amazing. I felt like I was on a different planet as it was so baron -as far as the eye could see.

The people really looked after us and had an accessible bus and steward stay close by.

As you can see I was supporting the ‘blanket on lap’ look lol! The FreeWheel and all terrain wheels came in very handy, would have been impossible without them!

We then went to the Icefields Skywalk which ended up being a private tour as the person we booked through messed up the booking and didn’t tell us that it closes at 5pm, when our other tour finished at 5:15pm (As I’m last off bus etc). So they kept the skywalk open for us and we arrived about 6:15pm. They’re so nice over here, they didn’t seem to mind and actually told us not to rush.

The drive up from the Icefields to Jasper was probably the best one we’ve done so far in terms of views.

We were particularly lucky to have a nice sunset to watch.

Looking forward to waking up tomorrow in Jasper to see what our new place is like in the daylight.

Our view in Jasper...

This morning we woke up in Jasper and were eager to see the Athabasca River that our complex sits next to. It was a gorgeous bright but cold day, so we got a great view of the river. These two pictures were taken a stones throw from our cabin.

After briefly exploring our new base camp we drove off to see some waterfalls. The first one was Athabasca Falls. You could hear the rumble of the water from the carpark.

Unfortunately the access wasn’t great so we didn’t stay for long. It was then off to Sunwapta Falls which was longer and more narrow.

The access here wasn’t great either so we headed home to rest and then later went out for dinner in Jasper at Jasper Brewery Company. We both shared a starter of Elk Carpaccio, it was nice! It was quite casual in there, it felt very Canadian! Food and drinks were good though, especially my rose gin cocktail 😋!

Jasper

So today was interesting, mostly because I was I bit stupid and naive. I went out for a morning walk along the river and it was very cold as it was snowing so I went by myself. I followed the road next to the river and then branches off onto a path once the road ended. There were lots of squirrels around that grabbed my attention - they’re funny little things out here, they shout at you to warn you off and have a squeaky noise like a guinea pig. So the whole time I was watching for wildlife and very wary of elk and bears being near. At some point I gave up looking for wildlife and headed home, only to see this on the footpath that I had just walked from:

(Picture taken the next day)

It was snowing at the time and settling well but this had no snow on it, so it was obviously quite fresh! Got safely back home and immediately googled what I had seen, turns out it was ‘bear scat’ from a black bear! So I had been very close to a bear whilst out walking on my own. It was within the boundaries of the camp we’re staying in, so I had a false sense of security! That really unnerved me so I’ve now bought some bear bells to attach to my wheelchair that will help bears to know that a human is around. The worst thing to do is accidentally creep up on a bear. I went to tell reception as youre meant to report any indication of a bear close by. They seemed quite cool about it and just advised us to make noise whenever we’re out somewhere, hence the bear bells.

Later we drove to Miette Hot Springs as it was so cold and snowy we needed warming up! Before pulling out of the complex we saw what we first thought was a wolf trotting along but after some research we now know was a Coyote. It was very quick so I didn’t manage to get a pic. About 5 seconds later we saw lots of elk chilling

Then as we pulled out of our complex we saw this beautiful Bull Elk.

Bull Elk are actually really dangerous especially at this time of year and are what people warn you about, much more than bears, so it was fortunate that we were safely in our cars. One stupid Chinese woman decided to get out of her car and wander only a few meters from it to get a good picture, really dangerous!

The drive to the hot springs was very pretty, especially in some places where either there were lots of autumnal colours or the lake was a piercing green colour.

The snow had fallen heavily at the springs and it was still snowing whilst we were in them. The access was quite good as we were given a wheelchair that could go in water and the pool had a gradual slope down into it, then once in the water I could swim off. Didn’t take pics as couldn’t really take phones into pool area but it was pretty!

The drive home was very snowy but thankfully we had our 4x4 Rocky Rogue to get us through it. Once Home I fell asleep and then woke up at about 8pm, we were both hungry but I was too tired to go out so we got a takeout. There are loads of nice restaurants that allow you to order a meal and then pick it up soon after. So we got some yummy healthy food from Earl’s. It was just what the dr ordered!

We then tried a variety of chocolate bars -none as good as English ones, and put on face masks.

T’was a good end to the evening.

Pine Bungalows

Today was our last full day in Jasper 😔 sad face! So far this has been my favourite place because of all the wildlife and natural beauty around.

Going to miss our little campsite and these views.

This is our cabin:

This is the distance between our cabin and Athabasca River: #nofilter

Anyway, today we went into Jasper town which is only a couple of minutes drive away.

We went shopping and I bought a few gifts, and I was naughty and bought a new handbag which had real fur on it- but it is recycled fur. We ate in the bear paw bakery where I tried a maple and pumpkin slice -really good! Oh and ... good news, I got my wheel fixed! 😀

One of the places we went to was called something like ‘the native gift shop’. In there was lots of quirky souvenirs, a lot of fur, and products made locally from wood and local stone. I therefore assumed that everything was authentic and at least made in Canada. I found a nice wooden key ring with a hummingbird on it, only to find when I turned it over that it was made in the Philippines. 😂 I then looked at some jewellery made from an amber coloured stone and asked the assistant about them. She explained that they were all pieces made from a local stone to Poland. When I asked why they were in the shop she explained that the manager was from Germany... 🤷‍♀️ 🙄

Later, back at Pine Bungalows, we had a rest and had some cheese and wine/gin. Sam found a very app bottle of red after searching the Liquor Store for a decent bottle.

We then went out for dinner at a local hotel which we didn’t realise would be so upmarket. As the prices were so high we decided to share a main course of Lobster Ravioli which was very nice and just enough as, the portion sizes out here are huge!
