Packing done... not easy planning for two adventures in one!

Planning for two weeks in a tent then 2.5 weeks road trip!

2
M62

Now on route with \240Bestys dad to Manchester airport for the most complicated trip to USA!!

3
Radisson Blu Hotel Manchester Airport

Coktails at the airport hotel!

4
Terminal 3

So day two and its my turn to brave the airport! Im fuing Manchester>Philadelphia>Charlotte then coach to the Jamboree site.

Arrived early to beat the queue and I think that paid off! Third in the queue, chaos ensues as all bags have to go through through the special bag coveyor.

But hey its time to lose my stressy / grumpy side and get into the jamboree frame of mind and accept, adapt and overcome.

Through security again the usual Manchester Nightmare but all sorted and time for a brew...

Yes I made the bed before I left!

SkyWalk... easy...

5
Manchester Airport

Besty starts her travel on her own... heathrow... charlotte... charleston and then a car trip to site!

6
Philadelphia International Airport

My journey tonsite was long. I finally arrived at charlotte airport having missed my original commection.

I managed to rebook a flight inflight on my ipad and then this one was delayed by several hours.

I met a nice american gentleman who was from West Virginia. We had a great chat and shared things about our home areas. Plus he was genuinely called Homer Simpson... he said he hated it!!

Although slow we were processed in about an hour and a half and then had to wait a further hour for the bus onto site as the welcome centre is about 20 minutes away just off the highway!

Finally I arrived onto site and at my tent at 0415... breakfast starts at 5... might as well stay up!

7
Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Once i landed in Charlotte i met up with a dutch guy and a uk non contingent guy and we caught the coach to site. I was extremely relieved to see my bag arrive as lots of bags have been lost and having handed my bag to a random guy in Philadelphia i wasnt convinced it would arrive!

8
J.W. And Hazel Ruby West Virginia Welcome Center

The coach ride was long... 4.5 hours and we eventually arrived at the Ruby Welcome Centre to be told it was a 3 hour waiting time to be processed....

Summit Bechtel Reserve

So having stayed up Katie met up with me and we went for breakfast in the huge dinjng hall... it can seat 6000 adults at a time!!

I then met up with some of the Rescue/EMS team management and decided tompower through with no sleep in 24 hours !

Hit the ground running!! The site as we drove in was foggy so it was difficult to orientate but it felt a long way!

The morning consisted of induction and briefings on how we are foibg to work.

The team consists of USA, Swedish, German, Colombian, Mexican, Canadian and two UK!

Lots of cultures and languages to overcome!

Once that was done we went out on an orientation drive ariund site to jnderstand thw layout and massive geography! \240Just from my tent to the centre of the site it takes 90 mins to walk via trails over the hills!

The UTVs are Polaris vehicles and capable. They are open cabs and the dust is horrendous!

We then had training on the various US / West Virginia Protocols. The use if King LT airways (what seems and over complicated LMA airway) and then pitstop CPR.

Then Dr. Wong (EMS Physician) did major haemorrhage ttaining for the team. We then were briefed on what critical care resources were available. (Blood, Ultrasound and RSI capable Doctors)

Then i went had a cold shower and then \240to my tent at about 2130 and collapsed aslee after 35+ hours on the go.

Summit Bechtel Reserve

Today was all about interagency working the US has lots of resources....

- 2x HEMS Civillian helicopters

- 2x Military Blackhawk Helicopters

- 45x Military Ambulances

- 3x ALS Ambulances from the State

- 12x UTVs for our team (Rescue / EMS)

So we had a brief on the bobcat box that is used for major incidents it hold all the command tabards and triage packs etc. This will be flow into the scene by the blackhawk and then delivered to the command post by UTV on foot depending on location.

We had about 2 hours chatting and explaining capabilities between teams which was useful for what would come later!

After lunch we then went to an operational readiness status and went out on standby to oeavtice the systems.

While we were doing this they ran a major incident exercise to test all the agencies.

They rolled a school bis on its side and filled it with casualties. They then set the story that the bus had plowed through the crowd and rolled.

This was hot and difficult work which in the middle of we ended up with 16 heat related real casualties and also Tim and I ended up attending the first EMS tasking if the event!

Once this was finished we were debriefed and stood down for the evening!

Summit Health Lodge

Climate - so this is the rub...

Out here the temperature has been 85 degrees farenheight with 90% humidity which means it feels in the region of 100-105...

You are constantly sweaty and over hot! The slightest breeze is a welcome relief... though often short lived...

I am drinking two litres of water every 60-90 minutes and it has taken until today to drink enough to not have brown pee!!

The weather has been so oppresive that the Jamboree has declared black flag conditions which basically means certain activities are shut down and everyone must drink as per the card in the photo!

The weather forecast says we should expect heavy rain and the temperature should drop in the couple of days!

12
Tickle Base Camp Echo

Met up with the Japan crew and Besty at the chew and spew again, there was further lighting warnings and significant rainfall. This didn’t deter us from a few impromptu selfies with the storm!

13
Tickle Base Camp Echo

Last night we had an impromptu catch up with friends from the last Word Scout Jamboree Medical Team in Japan.

It was amazing and just like we had never been apart. Great friendships are made at events like these and it was a specia kind of buzz!

14
AT&T Summit Stadium

Today was my day off so of course that means working!

Lazy start to the day with a morning brief. Followed by a couple of hours chatting and watching the world go by in the Chat and Chew (colloquially known as the chew and spew 😂).

At 1415 Bravo team met up at ems base and got a minibus to Charlie camp for a K Pop concert.. which was kind of cool and a new experience!

Katie popped by on her way to the opening ceremony nd met my crew mate Tim.

The K pop BNF were kinda ok.. non offensive cheesy pop like the backstreet boys!

They give all profits to scouting in developing countries which is cool!

We then finished about 1630 and wandered across the site to summit centre for dinner and a brief before the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony started at 1930 and was really impressive with 50000+ people in the stadium. Bear Gryls abseiled in to the stage and have a great talk to the scouts. The flag and nation welcome was amazing when they showed the Union Jack the uk. \240Contingent erupted.

The opening ceremony was excellent and the band who played music on the blenders and recycled bins and even used angle grinders on metal to make tunes really got the crowd going!

I dealt with two incidents and missed the finale which was the use of drones to make light displays above the stage.

Summit Bechtel Reserve

Today Tim and I started our first full 24 hour shift. We were assigned to alpha and bravo campsite. \240This tasking includes working overnight and staying up on the site due to the distance from echo.

We dropped our overnight kit off at the temporary tent and then went for a drive round to acquaint ourselves with the layout etc.

Once we had an idea of the layout and locations we set up under the shade at Eagles Nest Lodge.

We were fed and supported up at eagles lodge all day while working which was lovely!

Vehicle washing facilities...

Even Santa dropped in for Tea as it was Xmas day at the lodge!

16
AT&T Summit Stadium

Today I hiked across the site to have more of a look around before all the tents are set up.

Echo base camp on the trail out.

The trails are great walking and shaded, several deer seen but no bears!

The weather is incredibly changeable, as I crossed the dam there was a lightning warning announced and a massive rain shower passed through lasting 20 minutes. It was like being in a warm shower.

The zip wire down the valley finishes in the summit centre.

The \240console energy bridge is cool, it has two ways to cross either on the sides which take you to the top and to a platform below or straight across.

Met up with Besty after her shift ended and we walked back to echo together.

The total distance covers for the day was 20km on foot!

17
Tickle Base Camp Echo

There’s been a bear sighted rummaging through tents!

That’s what happens when people leave food in their tents!

Backstage and in the pit with Broadway sings Disney!

19
Fayetteville

We then went to Fayetteville for lunch. It is a very traditional US style town.

20
