First day out. Pulled out of the house around 6:30 headed to El Paso.

Not an exciting day, but necessary. Stopped at a new rest area about 130 miles from El Paso - walking path and great covered tables. Chatted with some people from Kerrville.

Checked into the Aloft hotel downtown and took Missy for a walk to San Jacinto Plaza.

After a quick clothing change, went to Mamacitas in the Hotel Indigo. We shared a huge pitcher of vodka/wine \240sangria and had some amazingly pretty good food. We shared bacon wrapped shrimp, chicken skewers with vegetables and buffalo grilled shrimp tacos.

Back to the room to prepare for tomorrow’s drive with a good nights rest :-).

Today is our drive-through New Mexico and into Arizona. We went through Silver City which reminded me of Albuquerque. The elevation was not quite 6000. We also crossed \240the continental divide. Of course we had to look up what that meant because neither one of us knew what it really meant. It is basically a way of diverting rivers into either the Pacific or the Atlantic Ocean.

And just like that out of Texas.

View from the car

And then just like that we crossed into Arizona at about 6,000 feet.

Diane chose this route so we could drive through the mountains - Hwy 180 most of the way. Mountains, valleys, forest and deserts. We drove by a few gas stations in New Mexico that had electric charging stations- Progressive of them.

We stopped for lunch in Alpine and ate barely memorable food at Alpine Grill. After leaving that area, we made it to an interstate after passing by the Wigwam Hotel, which was very interesting. We also saw quite a few petrified rocks in many of the rock beds in front of buildings.

Right off of I 40 is Winslow Arizona. We stopped for a photo op and grabbed a beer at Roadside Relic brewery. And then onto Flagstaff.

Crossed over Route 66 several times

Love this pic

Flat bed ford :-)

After settling in, we went to Mother Road brewery, which is supposed to be the number one rated here. The beers were underwhelming, all very similar. The food was mehhh - not a place to go for food.

Today was our day to explore Flagstaff. About a mile from our Hyatt Place was a hiking trail called Mars Hill. Liked it - wide and hilly!

At the bottom

Afterwards we went into historic downtown Flagstaff. Bit disappointing- sad little area. Liked the artist galleries and then hopped in and out of their breweries.

Alleyway mural

Had an awful lunch at MGs. So decided to walk over to the highly rated Historic Barrel & Bottle House. Had to redeem the lunch I didn’t eat with really soft pretzels and decent beer.

Ended up at DarkSky Brewery for two beers - yummy and good outdoor area. Missy was so good in her stroller.

Entrance

Princess

And back to the hotel for a beer and bed. Sat outside for a bit chatting with an elderly couple from LA area.

Another driving day tomorrow.

One more long driving day - just one interesting stop for a potty break - Alien 51 Nevada stop :).

Goofy…

Driving the Nevada desert was quite tortuous - passing by Las Vegas it was 112 degrees. Add that to nothing but a Death Valley looking area and a 1 lane road most of the drive made it one of our toughest drives ever.

We ended up in Tonopah Nevada - an old mining town. Sure felt like we stepped back in time everywhere we went. Stayed in this hotel - renovated and beautiful room.

Entrance to the hotel

View from our room

They had a few restaurants - of course most of them involved alcohol - it is Nevada of course.

Actually very good pizza.

And good beer.

After departing here, we went to the bug bar. The best view in all of the city. Sat outside with Missy on the patio and somebody bought us a shot because they won $1750. Definitely a one and done.

Dropped off Missy and wandered down to the Clown Motel. Yikes - \240motel and a museum next to a cemetery. Kind of really creepy and cute at the same time.

Dusty and overwhelming.

Hehe - Gary helped with this one.

And time for a nightcap at the Mitpah hotel and then to bed.

And Tahoe here we come! \240

Arrived around 3 - settled into the Webb casa and took it easy for the rest of the day and Friday.

Took a walk Friday morning and then settled in to watch the Olympics opening ceremony. Paris - wow!

We have been here at the Webb casa for 11 days and have done a lot of relaxing, had \240good food, great weather and amazing views of the lake, rivers and trees. Taking it day by day and not doing a lot of pre-planning took practice for me.

So - what have we done?

Walked to the nearest rock beach several times.

Found this in the rocks on the beach - appropriate!

In the woods behind the townhouse.

There are many woods behind the treehouse and flowers everywhere. It is also a cut through to the pool and hot tub.

Path to the pool. Not sure what this flower is, but it’s pretty.

On Sunday we went to Tahoe City. It is such a cute town. Parked and walked up and down the streets with Missy in her stroller. On Sundays they have live music on Commons beach. Glad we walked by there as we discovered they had a sailboat cruise that went out of the marina.

A one room theater. Playing Deadpool 3 - 3x a day. How quaint is that!

Beautiful flower baskets hanging in the streets.

Loved this statue. It is made with 200,000 pennies- yowza.

Closer look at the baby

We had lunch at Tahoe National Brewery. Nice view but disappointing that they did not have most of their beers. But the food was solid!

My shirt matches the water!

My lunch - roasted veggies and tzatziki sauce with grilled chicken- was quite tasty.

Diane’s lunch - meatball sub with pesto sauce.

On the trails behind the house

And then down to the beach for coffee at Watermans

Monday was our sailing day. We walked in the morning, just was lazy and then went on a 2 hour sail from the Tahoe City Marina at 5:30 to catch the sunset. The water is so amazingly clear here - it is incredible! Had some vino and got these amazing pictures. Liked the cruise, but was expecting a little more from our captain in terms of talking more about the lake.

The Olympics are on while we are here, so it was running in the background a lot. I do love watching gymnastics and Tuesday morning was the women’s gymnastics all around team competition. Of course our powerhouse led by Simone Biles won the gold. We \240were glued to the TV. We did go sit by the pool for a little while, after jumping in the hot tub and read our books.

We finished this off at dinner at Gar Wood, a \240really nice restaurant around the corner that we could walk to. Started with coconut shrimp and split a filet. The only \240disappointment was the hot fudge Sunday that was short on fudge.

On Wednesday, we got up early and went to Emerald Bay for a hike and to put our toes in the water.

Lower Eagle Falls about a half a mile round-trip hike near the bottom

Vikingsholm Building - was a private home and the only one in the bay before it was donated to the state.

Us of course.

Grass growing on the roof.

Just gorgeous

The areas around here are very very crowded. Luckily, we had gotten a parking spot on the street, but they were very hard to come by when we left. We decided to make the trek around the lake so that we could make sure we saw it all. The only place we stopped in Southlake was at this brewery.

Lackluster beer and no ambience. But Diane did get a really cool T-shirt.

Decided that we were missing Mexican food so Diane found us a place in Incline Village - Lupitas. Wow - \240the houses in this area were very large and very beautiful. The restaurant was in a strip center and all inside. The owner was super nice and the food was really good.

Mole enchiladas

Taco and green enchilada for Di.

Wiped out after that walk and two margaritas so time to take it easy.

Thursday we watched more gymnastics and then went for a walk.

Tee practicing the balance beam

Diane on the par course on the trails getting ready to tackle that hill.

We saw this ad and a few people told us about Truckee Thursdays so we decided to go. Good call on Diane’s part to go early for parking because that place was a zoo.

It was kind of what I expected with lots of local vendors, music, and beer, which we could not drink because you had to pay cash.

We loved this sign.

Rather than eating off the food trucks surrounded by a bunch of kiddos in the heat we popped in this place.

Air conditioning- not something everywhere.

Those two beers were really good.

And this charcuterie board was really good. I am going to learn how to make those flowers salamis.

Took a quick stroll down to the Truckee River before heading out.

We looked up two other breweries in Truckee to try and visit after leaving the madhouse of the festival but had zero luck so we headed back to our faithful place CBs, which is also around the corner from the townhouse.

Friday we left early to go to Reno since it was going to be 100. What a disappointing little town. We did the standard tourist picture and walked around downtown for a short while.

Little city is right.

Cool sculpture. Unfortunately, it is heavily cropped on the left side because of the skateboarders sitting there.

Walked around the Riverwalk for a short while

Nice bridge - \240wanted to put my feet in the water, but there were too many homeless people

Liked this sign.

Decided to go to the Atlantis casino. Not to gamble but figured we could get some lunch there. Decided to have some sushi and lobster bisque and Diane had a lobster roll with clam chowder.

Ended our day in Reno with some stopping shops for some essentials. Gas, Total wine and Trader Joe’s. Really, after being in that madhouse at Trader Joe’s I really don’t get the appeal of that place.

Wow - Saturday, August 3 already. We did a lot of nothing today. I worked for a little while and we cleaned the townhouse and Diane cooked us dinner. To end our evening, we walked down to the beach and watched a lot of dogs frolicking in the water.

And it is Sunday so we decided to go to the Old Post Office Café again for breakfast. I was a bad girl and had pecan pancakes and Diane had an omelette. We really need to share these plates as they are huge. We ordered one, but our bartender filled our glasses again, which necessitating taking a little nap before heading back out in the afternoon.

We wanted to go and walk on the Truckee River Trail. The problem was parking, which we finally found. We decided it was just way too busy to hang out there.

But we did have our first bear sighting. Actually, we saw one lying down when we first got there and then we saw these two wrestling around in front of everybody. They really are not scared of humans which is kind of scary.

200 pounds each maybe?

After leaving the very crowded Tahoe City we drove over to the very crowded Kings Beach. But we went to Bear Belly Brewing \240and had the place practically to ourselves- it was very peaceful. The beer was not that good, but mine was called golden bear, and it reminded me of Missy.

Hard to find a place to yourself around this area.

Two golden bears

We went back to our haunt CBs for pizza and beer. We ran into our hostess from breakfast - she works here as well and remembered us. She is from Serbia on a four month tourist season work visa. She will work in this area through September and then travel for a month before having to go home. We met people on this program before but we can’t remember from where - they come from the Balkans.

We needed a break from the lake life - who would have thought we were craving a big city. It is really busy around here in July/August.

We took off Monday morning for the Kimpton Alton in the fisherman’s wharf area of San Francisco. Arrived a little early, so we put Missy in her stroller and went to grab some lunch - chowder in a sourdough bowl for Diane and grilled fish tacos for Tee.

We strolled around being tourists until our room was ready.

I’m busy watching the seal lions…

Went to the Kimpton Happy Hour and to the Flyjng Ninja for sushi. Was quite good - spider roll. \240Fresh….

Tuesday was a walking day. Walked 2 miles over to the Presidio Park. Being SF, up and down hills and jackets off and on 😃

Nice background

Jackets on :-)

Yoda statue

From here, took an Uber to Golden Gate Park - little disappointed and not quite like I remembered. Dropped off by the windmill, we walked around - not many flowers going on. There was fencing up for the upcoming festival so it was hard to get to some areas.

Poppys - \240always a favorite.

One of the lakes at Circle of the Lakes

At the end of this, we were tired so we took an Uber back to the hotel to drop off Missy for a nap. We walked over to SF brewery and just meandered around. Had a Girardelli Stout and Di had an amber. Mine looked special :-)

It better - it was $16-ouch!

Decided to run and get pedicures At Lilypad about 7 minutes from the hotel. We both needed them. Typical shop - noone spoke to us….

Made it back to Kimpton for wine HH again and then went to dinner at the Blue Mermaid. Sat outside under a warmer - Missy was with us - they offered her a menu but she declined since she was full from her dinner.

Nice place - attached to a hotel

Diane got a clam chowder trio - the corn, crab and bacon was the winner.

Lobster ravioli - \240very lackluster- little flavor.

Dog menu - Missy passed but did take this picture with a seal

Cocktails this evening.

We got a late checkout on Wednesday so we could walk to Chinatown.

Year of the dragon - that is me and 2024 as well

At one end of Grant Street

And the other end

We knew we were in the area that we stopped to get a Bloody Mary 10 years ago and we found it- -Bar Larocca. Not quite as good as last time, but hey :-).

Got to see self-driving cars in use. Saw them several times - and at no time were they rude or breaking any rules!

Knowing that we would be in for the night stopped by Truckee Brewing for a peanut butter stout and pretzel knots. Gotta say it didn’t taste much like peanut butter. Most of the beers around here have been lackluster.

Back to Tahoe for a few days before heading home. As we tend to do, went for a morning walk. Walked down the closest pier and caught this moth.

Picked Traci up from the Reno airport Thursday afternoon for our weekend! \240We got all settled in, I made a charcuterie board and we had some wine and then went for a walk to the beach to breathe in the fresh air - perfect evening for it. Stopped by CBs one more time - dog kisses are good. \240

She loves Missy.

Friday was unpacking day for Traci and a day in Tahoe City. We started by going to breakfast at Fire Sign. Tracy showed us the house they almost bought - they made a way better choice with the townhouse.

Food was good!

Afterwards we wandered around some of the boutique shops - I found a hat :-). We stopped at an outside cafe with a view for a little rest.

View of the marina and my new hat

Toes in the sand.

And bears hanging out.

We ended the evening at Gar Woods - nice view, great scallops and a Woody - their signature drink.

The Woody - frozen rum concoction

And here we are - Saturday. We had lunch/breakfast at the Old Post Office Cafe again. Third time and still a charm. The rest of the day was practical time. Helped Traci put together baby stuff, laundry and cleaning.

For our final night we walked down to the beach and had a picnic.

Well - time to start the ride home. I am really not looking forward to getting back to the temperatures that are in San Antonio right now. \240Most of today we will be driving through Nevada - \240never in my life do I want to drive through Nevada again. It is so desolate, so brown and desert and just plain ugly. Our saving grace leaving is that we were at least on a major interstate so we had at least two lanes and the temperature was in the 90s rather than 112.

We crossed over into Utah and everything looked like white sand. I had to look up what we were seeing. It is the Bonneville Salt flats. Crazy to see so much salt that looks like sand.

Just the facts

And this is why it smells so bad!

Almost to Salt Lake City, so we pulled over to see the Great Salt Lake - our $10 pictures

And on to Lehi for our overnight. Nice Courtyard Marriott. Had dinner there, walked Missy and went to our room for the evening.

Up and at ‘em! \240Headed to Moab for the next two days. This drive is so much more enjoyable. Mountains, trees, green and cute little cities. This ride I could do again - Nevada - never!!!!

From the car picture

Scenery along the way.

Arrived on Monday afternoon in time for a visit to the Moab Brewery and a stroll around downtown. Had a beer and lunch at Moab Brewery- bean burger for me and Diane had honey almond chicken which was yummy. There was another brewery called Prosper next to our hotel so stopped in there for a second one.

Our goal today was to relax by the pool - ended up being in the hot tub. Huge hot tub at the Element hotel. Really kind of liked this hotel they had made to order breakfast, a small little bar and decent food for a mid-level hotel.

Tuesday was the reason we are here - Arches National Park. Started out a little rough as it was raining. We attempted to take Missy to a cute little local park called Mills Creek. We were walking with our umbrellas and Missy was miserable so we ditched that idea and went back to the hotel.

The only waterfall we made it to on this little trek

Checking the radar, my weather girl determined that our entry time of 11 o’clock was gonna be about perfect for the rain to stop and she was not wrong since it rained and stopped just about the time we pulled into our first area. The weather was cool and remained below 80 our entire time there. Every other day was close to 100 around here so we were very fortunate and really enjoyed our time in the park.

Not only the arches, but the architecture of the rocks and views are amazing. You had red rocks, green ground (from the minerals), trees, and just so many unique shapes that it was awe-inspiring and something you really cannot capture with your iPhone camera.

Really balanced!

Balance rock and 60 degrees - yippee!

Double arches - wow

Still in a jacket

One of my fav pics

We ended up doing the back trail around the arches - so about a 2 mile trek. Had the trail to ourselves most of the time.

Time to move on to another area.

On the trail that leads to Delicate arch. The only stand alone one we saw.

This was a hike of about a mile round trip - moderate hill.

Delicate arch - it looks delicate 😜

There are so many viewpoints- we pulled into this one to look at the canyons - apparently tunnels and canyons and 🦇s.

So pristine

Our final destination was at the end of the park - the Devils Garden. The park is just one main road - up and back. This area is for the serious hikers - not us. But we did walk down to two arches.

Nice walk down - about another mile walk.

Tunnel arch

Pine arch

And me in the same place.

Pure beauty 😘

This is one of the best national parks I think I have been in from the perspective that there were many many viewpoints to stop at. You could always get a parking spot. The speed limit was decent, and the signage was good. As a bonus, we realized at 62 Diane could get her senior park pass. We bought the annual \240one which will get us into any national park for a year, but we are going to upgrade it for lifetime!

Dinner was at Sultan - needed a change from the norm so chose Mediterranean- was just okay. Popped into Rooted Vine cause I needed a GOOD glass of wine. It was beautiful and had been open for 2 weeks. The owners need a personality - hope they make it cause it is the nicest place in the city of Moab.

Back to our hotel for a last glass of wine and bed time.

Up and at em again! \240Heading to Taos with a stop in Durango to break up the drive. Saw one last arch on our way out of Utah. Utah has a lot of weird booze rules.

Had lunch at Steamboat Brewery in Durango with a beer a piece. It is getting old eating at breweries, but they almost always have a dog friendly patio. Walked around town for about an hour - cute but expensive little mountain town.

Me and Missy pants on the patio

Cute flower beds

Nice mural

Missy and her bear friends

Oops - at both ends :)

Driving in we realized we drove over the Rio Grande Gorge \240bridge so we turned around to walk down and see it - impressive. 10th longest bridge in the US.

Windy on the bridge.

The gorge - way down there.

Arrived at our hotel around 6sh and loved our room and the restaurant- they allowed Missy in so we just had beer and margs with tacos there. We stayed at a Hilton Don Fernando - liked it!

Nice mural behind the bed.

Their outdoor patio - enjoyed the weather before we have to head home to Texas ….

Woke up the next morning and went to the Taos Pueblo. Walked around admiring the grounds and ended up talking to an older gentleman and ended up buying a pair of earrings from his wife.

One of the larger sections

Most the doors and some of the windowsills were turquoise colored

The Catholic Church inside the Pueblo - as the tour guide reminded us - they were forced into conversion and now most of them are Catholic

My earring artist.

After leaving the Pueblo, we walked around the square and some of the shops.

Nice pose Tee

And another bear!!

Ended up at what - the Taos Mesa Brewery of course. That pizza was the bomb and our beers were solid.

We ended our night back at our hotel restaurant and got ready for our departure in the morning.

And home we head. Being a 14 hour drive, we stopped in Van Horn for the evening.

At the start of our drive on highway 68 heading south to Santa Fe - passed signs for numerous wineries. May have to do a tour one day.

Nothing to do in Van Horn so like we did in Tenopah, we decided to stay in their one and only classy redone hotel El Capitan. Nice restaurant, but hot day. Hotel was well done but our room was super tiny. Oh well - last night on the road!

View from our dinner table

Nice courtyard

Well we were gone exactly 4 weeks. We were in 7 states and escaped some of the heat. California weather was awesome as was Taos. Lucked out in Moab with a cool down rain. We really relaxed at Lake Tahoe at the Webb casa as it was very peaceful at their house. The lake itself was very busy, but we mixed it up with crowds and home time. San Francisco was our get away to mix it up from Tahoe and we enjoyed wearing jeans and jackets - layering!!

About 4700 miles!
