La Crosse

We cross the Mississippi River into Minnesota. \240Here the river is wide, with small islands here and there.

On the Minnesota side of the river, we find two locks for river traffic.

The night's heat was brutal, and we got alerts that an electrical storm was coming, so we hunkered down Martha, grabbed the boys, and headed off to Iowa. \240We were out of the fray when the wind downblasts, the hail, and the lightening show started. \240We had our share of rain and gusts of wind, but just outran the major event in time.

We literally watched two fronts collide, which was fascinating.

Eventually one front overpowers the other and then the clouds and electrical forces unleash. \240It was one crazy show, for sure. \240We were able to make our way back to Minnesota and Martha - our fortress - by 6 pm.

Ackley

We stopped and explored the glacier trails in Ackley, Iowa. \240This leaves a lot of rolling hills and lakes (and perfect black soil for growing corn). \240Here, we walked from small pond to small pond through a series of wooden bridges. \240I found the little green rock which says, "Be a little boulder."

A pond \240full of fish!

Garfield

I don't know if they are ponds or lakes, but there is a lot of them here. \240Today we paddled out into a pond with turtles, swimmy bugs, frogs and little fry.

It was fun to paddle, float, paddle and float again. \240We talked about how deep it might (not) be, and how awful it would be to fall in.

A turtle checking us out.

It is very lush here and we have seen bugs for which we have no experience or knowledge. \240(Little turtle sunning on the rock).

We counted 7 turtles on the tree branch ...

Central Lakes Trail

Today we rode our bikes along the Central Lakes Trail, which runs between Fergus Falls and Osakis. \240It is beautifully maintained and meanders from lake to lake, sometimes with a lake on each side. \240The water is deep and clear.

Jim crossing one of several bridges.

We stop at a fishing dock and enjoy a few peanut M&Ms and a bottle of water.

I knew that I was going to have to sit in one of the big chairs around Alexandria.

A pelican taking flight.

Cattails and snakegrass are plentiful here.

As we stood over the inlet, i was struck how much it looked like a Monet panting. \240Jim was counting the fish he could see. \240I was watching the grass move under the flow.
