Rich & I arrived in Podgorica on a flight from Vienna. A couple hours later Holly & Judy arrive on their flight from Vancouver via Toronto & Warsaw.

Happy to see these two after making two tight connections. Unfortunately their luggage did not arrive.

Picked up the rental car at the airport and set out on 2 1/2 hour drive to Zabljak where we have an apartment rented for five nights.

Detoured to visit Ostrog Monastery. It was 15 kms up an extremely winding mountain road.

Founded in 1665 within two large caves in a cliff face 900m above the Zeta Valley

From the Lower Monastery the faithful, many barefoot, plod 3kms up the steep, winding road to the Upper Monastery. We limited our penitence to just the final 200m from the parking lot. (Not barefoot!)

Prayer candles

We had moments of clearer skies and the views were beautiful. Luckily not much rain on the drive.

Found our apartment in Zabljak and settled in for the night. Very long day for Judy & Holly.

2
Žabljak

Found ‘the mall’ where Judy & Holly could pick up a few things to get them thru until their luggage arrives. Pretty much just a flea market.

Girls did their best with selection available. Desperately hoping their luggage arrives soon.

After lunch and several downpours we head out to Dumitor National Park to hike Black Lake.

Luckily we still have the two umbrellas we purchased on our rainy day in Salzburg.

Moments of clearing skies show how beautiful it is here.

Happy hour at our apartment.

Pasta & Salad for dinner.

Another stunning day, 24C. Driving over an hour to the trailhead for today’s hike. Road is winding & narrow. Yikes—not going to challenge this guy!

No problem-he graciously backed up and moved over.

Parked the car and headed toward Subra Peak.

We were advised by a guide passing by that ascent to Subra Peak was technical & dangerous and we shouldn’t attempt it.

On our way up the trail. Very rocky.

Rainy day here in Kotor!

In between raindrops we quickly walked to Old Town looking for an ATM.

Day trip to Perast. After yesterday’s rain we are optimistic for a better day—and it was!

Drove 11 kms from Kotor to Perast. Parking was tricky but we did fine,

Perast is a car-free town so we parked on the side of the highway about half kilometer away.

Dating back to 1336, Perast was a small fishing village.

Perast is a UNESCO site.

St Nicholas tower is an impressive landmark in the city.

St Nicholas’ Catholic Church Tower (Rimokatolička crkva Svetog Nikole) is the heart of Perast. The church was built in 1616, but replaced a church dating to 1564.

We paid €5 each for a return boat ride to “Our Lady of the Rock” Driver dropped us off and returned in half an hour to bring us back.

Shkodër

Drove from Kotor to Podgorica Airport this morning and dropped off the rental car.

Now waiting for our pre-arranged taxi to drive us from Podgorica Airport to Shkoder, Albania

We had to show our passports at the border leaving Montenegro and again entering Albania.

Our taxi driver dropped us at our hotel in Shkoder.

Lots of antiques in the lobby. Employee at the hotel arranged van-boat-van transportation to Valbone tomorrow morning. We will be picked up at 6:30am and will be given our breakfast to go. We will leave most of our luggage here and have another night booked at this hotel 3 days later.

We visited Rozafa Castle

Hotel clerk met us in the lobby just before 6:30am. She told us where to leave our luggage for storage, gave us our packed breakfast sandwich, then led us down the street to meet our transportation.

We were the last to be picked up. We got the last 3 seats.

Made a 15 minute stop on the way.

Rich scored his much needed coffee.

The van stopped in the middle of a tunnel just before the ferry terminal. We were all told to exit the van.

VIDEO: It was difficult to capture the beauty around us.

We disembarked the ferry at Fierze and were met by waiting buses & vans.

Our van dropped us off right at our hotel in Valbone. Total cost of our 3 modes of transportation for the day was €26 each.

View from our deck.

We could only pack what could fit in our daypacks for the 3 days. Lots of layers! It was chillier than we expected when the sun went down.

We could buy dinner at our hotel for €10 and order a packed lunch for €4. Breakfast was included in the €40 we paid for our room. Excited for tomorrow’s hike over the pass to Theth!

15
Bujtina Pllumi Theth

We are so relieved that the weather is cooperating and it looks like a perfect day for our hike over Valbone Pass to Theth.

Morning sun from our deck

Leaving our accommodation in Valbone. Like so many of the guest houses it is a family run operation. The grandson who served the meals and checked us out graciously offered to drive us 4 kms to the trailhead. He refused any payment for this.

We are carrying all we need for 3 days in our daypacks. Definitely heavier than usual.

The trail started out pretty flat on a very rocky surface.

Horses for hire to carry luggage.

The leaves were just starting to change color in the past week.

The climb has definitely begun.

The nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) is the most venomous snake in Albania. A pretty rare sighting apparently. Lucky us (or not!).

This hike can be done in either direction. Some people choose to hike to the pass from either Valbone or Theth then back down the same way.

The vistas are amazing

Lucky us—coffee shop! Actually Rich was the only one to partake of the Turkish coffee served here. The rest of us had a cold drink.

A beautiful spot and refreshing stop.

Grateful for the bridge!

It was a very steep down after the pass so a flat stretch was appreciated.

The mountains look a little different on this side. Saw lots of rosehips.

Felt very fortunate that we got to see the changing colors.

Checked in to our guesthouse in Theth. Dinner was €12. Salad, soup, bread, cheese, Pork Chop & potatoes.

Enver Hoxha was, like all Marxists an atheist. In 1967 he declared that Albania was the first atheist state in the world. Hoxha did all he could to eradicate religion from Albania. All religious buildings were closed and all worship was banned.

Enver Hoxha was an Albanian communist politician who was the ruler of Albania from 1944 until his death in 1985

Albanian Bunkers are concrete hardened, "doomsday" shelters buried partly underground. These mushroom like structures were created to protect greater Albania from various real and imaginary enemy attacks. Built under direction by the late communist dictator Enver Hoxha. There were more than 750,000 bunkers built in Albania.

We toured the inside of Bunk’Art 2.

Can’t get enough of the architecture here in Tirana!

The Tanners' Bridge is an 18th-century Ottoman period stone footbridge. The bridge, built near the Tanners' Mosque, was once part of the Saint George Road that linked Tirana with the eastern highlands.

The bridge crossed the Lanë stream near the area where butcher shops and leather workers were located. The bridge fell into disrepair when the Lanë was diverted in the 1930s. In the 1990s, the bridge was restored for use by pedestrians.

Berat

Today we took a taxi to Tirana airport to pick up our rental car. We drove from Tirana to Berat. Unfortunately it rained so heavily at times that vehicles drove with 4-way flashers on.

We checked in to our guesthouse and set off for a walk. Berat is known as ‘Town of a thousand windows’, a Unesco World Heritage City.

Lovely pedestrian streets and Old Town.

Margarita Tutulani (1925 – 6 July, 1943) was an anti-fascist activist of Albania during World War II. Her brutal death inspired many to join the resistance against fascism in Albania.

Next thing we know—lightning, thunder and pouring rain. Street was so flooded we just stayed in place.
