2 hikes today at High Cliff State Park

Pretty good for a day tripper

Day trip adventure to High Cliff State Park! What a beautiful unusually warm day- 76 degrees!

10:45 AM departure for a destination 1,5 hours away but Jen refused to set an alarm and get an early start because it’s her birthday week - lol- and she leaves for a work trip ON her birthday and the wake up bells will be around 5 AM EVERYDAY- so there you have it. It worked out fine and the day was great.

Beach at the state park - Lake Winnebago

No goose poop in the grass to be found anywhere- unlike EGP- awesome!

COLD Ass water - John insisted I dip my toes in……..BRRRR is all I can say

Map of park - we did the Red Bird Trail long Loop and Lime Kiln Trail

Up next- The tower of course- what park doesn’t have the Tower Lookout- I’m calling it ladybug tower. I’ve never seen so many ladybugs in a small swarm at the base of the tower - at first I thought they were bees- but noooo- so many as we walked up the tower and at one point there were several on me and I started freaking out because Julia Schmitt just told us a story about how she got stung by a ladybug- who knew?!?! And then John said our Julia was once stung- again- who knew!

Start of the Red Bird Trail- Chief Redbird Statue - he lived in 1800s

Overall this trail was easy, but not all that fabulous- compared to once we did our second trail- minimal lake views- felt very dry walking over concrete areas- close to the road at multiple points- but OK. Also meandered by the campground sites. Lots of people camping actually- were surprised. And lots had Halloween decorations at their sites.

Red Bird Trail - 3.8 miles

Looks dry doesn’t it??? Lake at top of photo.

Beautiful yellow trees

Before driving to the next trail we encountered several old timey cars that must have been out for a Sunday drive I guess. They turned around in the lot we’re in while having a snack and taking a break.

Next up- Lime Kiln Trail- 1.7 mi

Lime producing co from 1856-1956

Part of this trail is along the old RR track which was cool. Started trail from a campground site- down stairs and then steep trail down to get close to lake. Similar to a Devils Lake trail in the fact that I was surprised at the mild difficulty and strain on my legs! Ughhhh - of course John was fine and I’m lame. This was a much better and beautiful trail close to the shoreline.

At the start of the trail

Can’t really tell unless you zoom in- but steep - this is the view looking up

Beautiful spot

Old Kiln Ruins

So I was about to not even see the ruins because I was starting to get cranky and thought it led to the parking lot….which it does actually…but you see these beautiful old ruins from the late 1800s- it was fenced off of course, but would have loved to get closer. John actually said he noticed these from the boat in the lake when he was fishing with Pat!

Our not so townie bar post park

Wanted to do our traditional beer stop at a townie bar and this place was huge and modern and not like we expected! So we moved on quickly. Nice place though.

Sunset hour from Harbor Bar and Grill

Not exactly WI townie bar- but definitely more quaint and small town WI feel with a great view

AND now it’s time to go home, but we don’t want to make the meal we planned- so we stop at the local supper club of course! ❤️
