We are excited to embark on our very first train trip. We booked this trip over six months ago and the anticipation is building as we are only two weeks away.
I have booked us in a bedroom car. It has two seats, a table and bunkbeds won’t that be fun? \240We start the trip in Chicago, we are flying there the day before we board the train on September 3 and we returned to Chicago after our visits \240to Glacier Yosemite and Yellowstone National parks.
We are so excited, we leave for our train trip on Monday, September 2. \240 This weekend I’m finishing the laundry and we are packing on Sunday, \240after packing we attended a concert at The Gaslight Music Hall for a performance of a band doing Eric Clapton songs. \240 Theveving was wonderful sharing a great time with our friends the Asp’s.
We fly to Chicago at 11:30 on Monday and we are looking forward to our first train trip.
And we are off. \240We enjoyed breakfast in the airport enhanced with Bloody Mary’s \240 I went to the airport Hudson’s News for an item and the candy is so expensive. \240A large sharing bag of M&M’s was $11.99. \240 Wow!
Arrived in Chicago on an eventful plane ride. \240 We are staying at the airport Hilton tonight and taking Uber to the train station tomorrow for our 2 PM boarding. \240 So excited! \240This is the first big trip we have taken since Africa last June after our Great Lakes cruise in July was cancelled due to flight issues with CrowdStrike.
So we checked into the Hilton, the sunset tonight was lovely. \240 Jeff told them at checkin he didn’t want avroom near the elevator. \240 Well we are at the far end of the hall, you can’t get any further from the elevator, however we are overlooking the airport runways. \240 I wonder which is louder elevators or planes taking off all night?
We took Uber from the airport Hilton downtown to the Amtrak station. The Great Hall in the station is beautiful.
We checked in for our train, interesting at no time were we asked for ID. \240 I presented the train voucher with a QR code and it was scanned, then we were instructed where to check our luggage and directed to the Metropolitan Lounge. \240We are very early as the trip from the airport normally takes an hour but the traffic was minimal and we arrived in about 30 minutes.
When we board the train we were invited to the observation car for Sips and Sightsee as we leave downtown Chicago. \240We also were able to make dinner reservations. \240Dinner is served at a community table of 4. \240There are a lot of new experiences.
Here is our route. \240Our first stop is Salt Lake City to take a coach to Yellowstone
We have a Bedroom cabin, it is about the size of a king bed with a large chunk cut out for the toilet/shower. \240
Thus far the trip has been fantastic. \240 After the Sip and Sightsee we came down to our cabin and have really enjoyed the views along the way. \240There is lots of farmland and after a couple hours we crossed the mighty Mississippi. \240 I had never been to Iowa before
What a fabulous day on the train! \240We are somewhere in Iowa or Nebraska who knows. \240 We have had a great time. \240 Dinner was delicious and we met a nice couple from Cape May NJ. \240 Sunset was beautiful and now we are off to organizing ourselves in our cabin. \240 We will see how it goes with the bunk beds. \240
We arrived in Denver this morning around 7:15. \240Pretty much on time. \240 The bunkbeds last night were a challenge. \240We decided we could sleep on the 34” wide bottom bunk mattress. \240NOT! \240 That was a disaster and there was little if any sleep. When we reboard the train in 3 days we will need to find another solution. \240I guess it is the bunk beds.
Interesting when we arrived just outside downtown Denver the train changed tracks and backed into the station
The mountains are beautiful and we are truly enjoying the trip across Colorado. \240 This is all new terrain for us via land. \240 We can see the Colorado River meandering along the train tracks. \240 There are many people rafting, fishing and camping along the banks.
We arrived in Utah about 7 PM this evening. \240 The landscape was immediately different from that in Colorado. \240The land is flatter and the rocks are more like plateaus.
Sunset tonight was lovely. \240It will be nice to get to Salt Lake City this evening. \240We get off the train tonight at nearly midnight as the train is running about 40 minutes late. \240 Not to bad considering the horror stories we have heard. \240We shall have a good nights rest in a hotel.
.
We had a great nights sleep and trecked \240to the bus pickup point this morning to board the coach for a 7 hour ride to Yellowstone. \240 \240After our pickup downtown we stopped at the Greyhound Station for additional passengers and then the airport for more passengers. \240 We have seen all the sights in Salt Lake, except I neglected to get a picture of the Temple. \240 Maybe on the way back.
Salt Lake City airport
There are only a few people on the bus so we are sitting opposite each other. \240This allows for maximum photo opportunities and I can stretch out my legs. \240 We met a nice couple Cindy and Tom who are from Mansfield, Ohio, not far from where we are from. \240 They are your friendly and fun midwesterners.
Two items of dude the toilet on the bus is not working, bummer but the driver said we would stop about every hour and one half for quick breaks. \240 Second the USB ports at the seat don’t work. \240Oh well it will all work out.
Thus far nearly 3 hours into the bus ride not much to see out here. \240There is a lot of flat farmland bad small brown hill/ mountains
The trip to Yellowstone was pretty benign. \240Most of the way it was flat with mountains in the distance when we crossed into Idaho the terrain and foliage changed becoming flat with large evergreens. \240Thus far no wildlife sightings except from the highway I saw a bison at a wildlife park. \240 That doesn’t count.
The driver did point out the mountain range that looks like a sleeping Indian. \240See below
We stopped along the last few miles to drink from a fresh water spring called Howard’s Spring \240 The water was icy cold and I filled up my water bottle after a drink. It as fun
Local art
Arriving at the hotel in Montana we were happy to get out of coaches and vans and stretch our legs. \240We are pretty close to ontime only about a 1/2 behind and we should arrive at the hotel in time for cocktail hour and prior to the NFL kickoff at 6:20 MST.
We are staying at the Gray Wolf inn and suites for the next two nights. The hotel has a fire pit outside nd they have s’more kits in the lobby.
We walked to a local restaurant and had a delicious dinner complimented with local beers. \240 Fun evening. \240 On the way to the restaurant we passed a incognito McDonalds and a Chevron also in disguise. \240
Today we took a tour of on the Lower \240Loop. \240This was a full day of excursion starting at 8 AM and returning at 4 PM. \240We were able to experience a great overview of the park including many steam and mud pots, Old Faithful, other geyser eruptions. \240 \240The tour was wonderful and Jeff and I came away with a deep appreciation of the park. \240The water is so clear and pure looking with temperatures ranging from 39 degrees to over 190.
Wildlife was scarce only seeing bison multiple places, however many were very close to the road. \240We are told there are elk, bears, otters, eagles, and on and on, but none were evident today.
Today we left West Yellowstone and are retracing our coach ride back to Salt Lake City. \240 The bad news is the roads are just as bumpy this leg of the journey as they were on the way out. \240 We arrive in town around 4 and will check into our hotel. \240We board the train at 11:40 tonight. \240A long day. \240Here is the good news we have a hotel room for a few hours.
The cats are doing well. Our friends the Asp’s were over to visit them for a few hours yesterday. \240They enjoyed a cocktail while they scratched cat ears. \240 Our cat sitters is doing an excellent job and the kids love her. \240Even Olivia immediately comes out when she arrives. \240
We arrived in Salt Lake City after a nearly 8 hour coach ride. \240Frankly it was terrible. \240The roads are not smooth but the coach was so bumpy it was like riding a bucking horse. Multiple times we hit bumps and I was tossed out of my seat up 6 inches. \240Jeff and I both ache.
We had dinner in downtown Salt Lake. \240The town is beautiful, clean and appears safe. \240There were a large number of people walking around. \240 We chose to dine at the Copper Onion. \240It was delicious and we had waygu beef stroganoff. \240 Excellent dish. \240Cute restaurant, great service and wonderful menu.
Ar 10:00 PM we are getting Uber to the train and we will try the bunk beds again. We are so tired I don’t think it matters at this point. \240 We will see. \240 We arrive in Emeryville about 11 miles from San Francisco tomorrow around 5 PM. \240We will see how close to time Amtrak is running. \240
We had a great nights sleep in the bunk beds. \240I took the top and Jeff fastened me in the cage in case the \240train stops suddenly or I roll over. \240 It is interesting. \240Our daughter said I looked like I was strapped in like a mental patient.
This morning at 6AM we were off to catch the coach for a Grayline tour of Yosemite. \240Anyone who knows me is aware that Mica and 6 AM are not a great combination, but I answered the bell and we made the coach. \240The driver/ tour guide was one of those that yadders, talking about nothing and telling stories with little meaning. \240 We were rather tired of him before we crossed over the Bay Bridge.
The trip to the park was nearly 4 hours and the return was the same, making it a 14 hour day. \240 We are both very tired. \240 The park is beautiful and while the leaves have not started to change there are so many beautiful places to see and experience nature. We visited El Captain, the Dome, multiple waterfalls, the 3 brothers and many other spots \240 \240The waterfalls have very little if any water due to the drought, so they were not spectacular. \240 Wildlife was not seen except for a squirrel ( does he even count) and a crow. \240 I did miss the mother black bear with 3 cubs by just a few minutes. \240 Bummer.
We were given 3 hours of free time but instructed not to take the in park shuttle as there had been some issues returning for departure on time. \240We would have seen a lot more of the park from the in park schuttle. \240All in all it was a beautiful day, the weather was pleasant with a slight breeze and I was able to walk to some of the sites.
Yosemite has experienced several fires in recent years along with some flooding. \240The fire damage is still evident and of course this will lead to mud slides with heavy rainfall.
Above are some pictures. \240 Tomorrow we hope to take the ferry over to Alcatraz before we board the train for Seattle tomorrow evening.
Before we board the train for Seattle tonight we spent the afternoon at Alcatraz. \240 The ferry ride is about 20 minutes and I don’t know why I did my hair before as I looked like I had been in a cyclone when we got off. \240 From the ferry you can see both the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge as well as your first good look at the prison.
The audio tour is very interesting and you see the intake, the \240cell block, solitary confinement , visitation window, The Hole and the dining hall. \240The tour includes the small gardens , the exercise yard and the lighthouse. \240 The prison also has a morgue, however it was not used for prisoners, but used during the time Alcatraz was an army prison not a federal prison
After return to Pier 33 we walked up to Pier 39 and enjoyed lunch at Fog Harbour Fish House. \240 I had the lobster roll and Jeff enjoyed the clam chowder and a wedge salad. \240We both agreed it was yummy. This was our lunch and dinner as we leave for the train station at 6 and board the train at 9.
We took Uber from the hotel near the wharf area of San Francisco back to the Emeryville Amtrak station. \240 We depart here at 9:41. \240 \240We hope the train is on time. \240We don’t arrive in Seattle until after 7 tomorrow evening. \240
We traveled overnight through California arriving in Falmath, Oregon after 9 this morning. \240 The train is still run in about 1.5 hours late. \240 The conductor who boarded the train in our last California stop announced rules for riding the train including smoking, vaping, excessive alcohol consumption and being disrespectful. \240 Well the excitement occurred at the first stop in Oregon when a gentleman was excused from the train for vaping. \240 He claimed it wasn’t smoking, but he was escorted off the train with his belongings.
The Oregon terrain is simply stunning. \240 We have throughly enjoyed watching the landscape from our cabin. \240 Jeff and I both agree this is a new adventure and we enjoy traveling this way. \240 The food on this train is a little better, but the menu is the same.
Pictures of the Columbia River as we arrive in Portland. \240
Tomorrow we are in Seattle all day. \240We are going to the space needle and the Chihuly garden glass exhibit. \240 Fun fun fun. \240 I’m sure we will find a great seafood restaurant. \240 We board the train for Glacier at 4:55 and arrive Friday morning.
We spent the day in Seattle. \240Very busy, we went to the space needle and also the Chihuly Glass Garden exhibit. \240Both were good but as always the Chihuly glass was phenomenal! \240 We have seen several of his installations including a winery in Walla Walla, the Phoenix botanical gardens and again at the Frank Lloyd Wright houses in Phoenix. \240The glass never gets old
A interesting part of the day a gentleman \240was apparently new to scooter driving and he was challenged to get his scooter on the elevator at the space needle hitting several things and running over people. \240The next time we saw him he was in the Chihuly Glass exhibit. \240 Scary very scary. \240It made us afraid
After this excitement we walked through the Pike Street Market and enjoyed all the fresh fish, meats, vegetables and other booths. \240 Last we had lunch at a restaurant highly recommended named the Pink Door. \240 We were challenged finding the location as there is no sign or address simply a very plain pale pink door. \240The food was exceptional and we certainly enjoyed lunch
We board the train at 5 and arrive at Glacier tomorrow at 9 ish for 3 days. \240Very excited our real last chance for wildlife.
This morning we arrive at Glacier National Park after the night on the train. \240Jeff arose early and took some great pictures this morning. \240 We are only slightly behind schedule.
Once we arrived at West Glacier on the far side of the park we saw some beautiful scenery as we traveled across the park to the East Glacier stop. \240We are staying in the Glacier Lake Lodge a historical property.
We arrived at the Lodge we were greeted by a gentleman to take us the short distance from the train. \240He was driving a 1967 Checker. \240 The car was awesome. \240The lodge was built in 1913.
After lunch in the canteen there was a wedding on the lawn. \240 The sun was out but it was a bit cool, at least the rain stopped prior to the big event.
Our friends Alane and Steve stopped by to play with the cats. \240They also brushed Oliver. \240He loves to be brushed. \240 They are getting along well. \240This is the longest they have been with just a sitter twice a day rather than someone living with them.
Today we did the Red Bus Big Sky Circle tour of Glacier. \240This is an 8 hour tour on a 1930’s touring car. \240 The park still has 33 of the original 35 cars issued by the government in operation. \240 The cars have been rehabbed by Ford and one cool feature the canvas tops roll up to expose the sky. \240Once the car stops occupants ate permitted to stand up and take pictures. \240Our guide Tanya called it prairie dogging.
It was a fun day when we started at 9 AM Itvwas 40 degrees and the high was 67. \240 It was overcast when we left with occasional sprinkles but by noon it was sunny so Tanya rolled the top back. \240We enjoyed the sun for about an hour and then it began to rain really hard and she had to unroll the top quickly. \240This is all a manual job.
Once again it was a no wildlife day. \240Bummer! \240 She said she typically sees big horn sheep, mountain goats and bears on her tours. \240We saw none not even a squirrel. \240 Friends who did and earlier tour saw deer, goats and white buffalo.
We hit many of the high points of the park although it was foggy due to the rain for a great part of the afternoon. \240 The park is beautiful and there were many small waterfalls and many large and small lakes, rivers and creeks. \240The landscape is very unique and it was exciting to see
We had lunch at the McDonald Lake Lodge another old lodge which is more of a hunting style lodge.
McDonald Lakes
McDonald Lodge for lunch
Cows not bears.
Today, our last day in Glacier we took a Sun Tour. This tour is led by tribesmen from the Blackfeet tribe. \240 We back tracked over some of the route we took yesterday but since it was so rainy and foggy we could see a lot of the tour in the afternoon. \240 Today we could see the mountains and it was lovely. \240
Saint Mary’s Tourist Center
Blackfeet Tribal Flag
Giant bird nest I forget what kind
Jackson Glacier
Blackfeet Glacier
We got out at the Continental Divide at Logan’s Pass and had our photo taken
Today, our last day I the park we saw a bear cub! \240 My wishes have been granted. \240He was in a tree and mama must have called because by the time we got cameras he was sprinting across the grass. \240I have circled him in my picture. \240We also missed seeing a grizzly bear by about 5 minutes. \240Bummer. \240
We board the train at 9:30 tomorrow and arrive in Chicago around 4 on Tuesday. \240 Our flight home is Wednesday.
Today we start the journey home. \240Our train arrived at the East Glacier station on time and we departed on time. \240While waiting at the lodge for the shuttle we were greeted by the lodge dogs and Jeff took some photos of the gardens.
The terrain during the trip was flat filled with corn fields and agriculture after we left glacier. \240This continued throughout the day in Montana.
We arrived in North Dakota around 7 this evening. \240Sunset \240and the ND sky are beautiful. Jeff has noted that we have been in 14 states during this trip. \240 Many of these states we had not been in before. \240 The list includes Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, ,Utah,Wyoming, Montana,Idaho,California,Oregon, Colorado,Washington, North Dakota and Minnesota. \240 This is quite a list.
Tomorrow we go through Minnesota, Wisconsin and finally Illinois to our destination of Chicago. \240 The landscape has been so very lovely and very so different from state to state. \240
Through the night we traversed the state of North Dakota and this morning we are in Minnesota. \240 The train is running about 2.5 hours late as we had some bad weather and flooding during the night and had to slow our journey. \240
The landscape is similar to that of All the plain states, but is sure is beautiful. \240 In some areas the leaves have started to change.
