Bowen Mountain

From high in our “fortress of solitude”, we (Cherie and Morgan) are making the final touches to our packed bags and making sure all the mundane stuff is done (taking the bins out, changing the bed sheets etc.) while trying to contain our excitement for the trip ahead.. Olive on the other hand seems to be enjoying a tropical fruit platter of strawberrys and mangoes while watching the “Trolls” cartoon on Netflix (she really drew the short straw there). Soon we will be packing Bette up into her little cat cage and dropping her off at Kurrajong vet before making our way to the airport

Unfortunately On the way to the airport olive broke out into a fever. For a minute we were not sure if we would have to change course to take her to the doctors, but she seemed to come good so we pushed on.

A spot of lunch at the airport to refuel and then to the boarding gate

We spent the next 20 minutes artfully avoiding the airline employee weighing everyone’s bags. Somehow we managed to escape the wrath of her scales. We are pretty sure our bags are heavier than the limit. Cherie blames me for jinxing us , after I spent half the drive to the airport saying I had never had my bags weighed.

Below is a picture of the plane we didn’t catch

Waiting for takeoff

Touch down!!!!!

This lovely little beagle was doing his part to protect Tasmania’s eco system.

We made it to the hotel (thanks to the skybus) and spotted this rainbow from our window. Hopefully a sign of things to come

Olive started to seem better but has now crashed out completely. She has a pretty high fever (poor little thing). This picture is just before she crashed. We played a round of guess who followed by a game with these square things

Cherie and I ordered room service for dinner and now we are enjoying this view out the window.

Tomorrow we will pick up the camper van and work out if we go to MONA or to a wildlife reserve. Stay tuned!

Hobart

Yesterday was our first full day in Tasmania and we started the day by walking to this cool bakery Cherie had spotted the previous day (called pigeon whole). This place was a really cool bakery that was operating out of a converted warehouse. They had amazing looking breads and danishes. Unfortunately they didn’t do breakfast there but gave us directions to a place that did. So we made it way to that cafe (called criterion st cafe.

Olive and Cherie played another round of Guess Who (which olive won) while we waited for our order. Morgan ordered a dish called the “pork sword” and Olive and Cherie shared a plate of toast, avocado, bacon and sausage which olive didn’t have. While we were there we spotted a poster for the “Huon valley festival” which is apparently on this weekend and has live music and comedy acts and camping. While we are out awesome breakfast and consumed multiple coffees we discussed the merit of this random festival and are considering if we amend or plans to include it.

After lunch we headed back to that cool bakery and picked up 2 loads of bread, 6 bagels and a donut.

We made our way back to the hotel to check out with our spoils of baked goods.

We checked out of the hotel and caught a taxi to the camper van place (cruisin’) to pick up our new home/set of wheels for the holiday.

Below is the obligatory shot of tourism brochures at the caravan place.

Our new home!!

Read - set - go!

Our first port of call was the Museum of New and Old Art (MONA). By he time we arrived it was lunch time and we were all hungry so we sat down in the cafe courtyards and had a bite to eat. Olive fed the cute little chickens (and the scarier big one) that were roaming around the cafe.

Nice view

We made our way into the exhibitions and Olive lasted for maybe 45 minutes before it was all to much for her. Looks like the Panadole had worn off and she was still feeling unwell so we decided to pack it in and make our way over to the caravan park. Below are a few shots of what we did see at MONA

This work below is really cool- the machine creates raindrops in the form of words and “rains” a new word every few seconds- the words have a political slant.

The caravan park we are staying at has a wood fired pizza restraunt attached to it. Olive was really keen to have pizza for dinner so we thought why not.

Olive said it was the “best tasting pizza” she has ever had. Huge wraps from a girl who knows a thing or two about eating pizza. We told the wait staff what Olive had said and they were really chuffed... until olive then went on to clarify to them that while the pizza was good the veggies were absolutely disgusting.

The waiter chuckled and replied “From the mouths of babes.”

Oh Olive.

After dinner we settled in for our first night in the camper.

Hobart

So yesterday morning started like most days - olive threw up her bagel and complained her mouth was hurting like she was allergic, so we spent the first hour freaking out she might be going anaphylactic. Luckily it turned out to be nothing. Still not sure why she threw up (maybe just sick, maybe gag reflex?).

We decided to spend the rest of the morning at bonerong wild life park. This place was awesome and olive got to feed heaps of kangaroos, see real life tassie devils and pat a wombat and a koala.

The lunch place was this awesome - it was really nice vegan food with no nuts! What a bonus :) Because Olive was such a good girl we said she could buy something special from the gift shop. Of course she picked a tassie devil as well as a rainbow lorikeete key ring.

While were there we found out that Cat had the baby! We were all excited to hear about the new addition Bettie and looking forward to meeting her when we get back :)

Here are some shots of the wildlife park.

After the wild life park we considered going to port Arthur but decided to give it a miss due to the long drive time and Olives inability to withstand boring adult stuff like MONA yesterday... so we decided to got to Richmond (Tasmania) which is a historic little town close by with some wineries around it.

Olive fell asleep on the way there so we stopped briefly by the old bridge (built by unskilled convict labourers in 1823) and then headed over to a couple of wineries for tasting.

Once we got all our ducks in a row it was time to hit the wineries.

This winery was cool - on the wall too can see two soil extractions from their two seperate vineyards. The farmer dug a trench in each winery and pour latex down the wall and made a cut on the other side to get the sample.

Olive woke up for this one which was lucky because they had a playground! Cherie and I had a wine taste paddle each and sat by while olive enjoyed running around and playing

But olive was a little \240frightened of these birds. To me they look like they are wearing clown makeup.

We headed back to our campground and after olive had a little play on the swings there we played a few games and had some snacks before I got dinner underway.

It started raining so we took the party inside... Wine time!

A nutritious dinner of pork sausage , with a side of pork sausage.

The sausages were a real crowd pleaser (evidenced by the look of joy on everyone’s face)

After dinner Olive put herself to bed and Cherie and I played a few rounds of cards.

Earlier in the day we also bought impromptu tickets to the Huon Valley festival so tomorrow we will hit up Salamanca markets and then make our way down that eh Huon valley.

So I’ve been pretty slack with posting entries for the last few days so I have a bit of ground to cover-

So on the Saturday the 10th we kicked off the day with a walk around the famous Salamanca market where we bought a swag of goodies. After that we drive from Hobart down to franklin for the houon valley festival. Little did we know that it was the inaugural festival and they did not sell many tickets so it was a pretty small crowed. The festival area was large so it made it seem even smaller. Highlights were watching Matt Okine doing a 20minute comedy set, followed by some bands on he lawn. Asta was pretty cool. Here are a few shots from that day.

Olive loved this band. They also played at the music festival later in the day.

I had a fresh ly shucked oyster for $2. It was incredible.

This guy had some mad soccer ball juggling tricks

Below shot is of the festival location (franklin)

Matt okine = funny

During the festival Olive ditched me for someone else’s dad when I wouldn’t get up to dance. It was pretty funny.

Friends again

Asta had some nice tunes

On the Sunday morning olive and I spotted some black swans before breakfast (which we ate sitting by the river). \240we decided to kick on from the festival and head to cradle mountain. It was a long drive (5 hrs) \240but well worth it. On the way we stopped off at Campbell Town and had lunch in the park.

We decided to stay the night at the Cradle Mountain lodge and we were glad we did. It was a beautiful old place that gave us the opportunity to get up close to some wild animals. Wallabies happily bounced around the grounds and wombats were happy to hang out with the guests. We went for a little walk near the lodge called the “enchanted walk” and it was beautiful.

Below are some shots of he day

Lunch in Campbell town

This place in Campbell Town with 1000 chimneys was for sale... tempting

The Main Street of Campbell town has all these bricks laid with the details of convicts who settled the area. Their name, age, ship and crime are all listed

Cradle Mountain Lodge

On Monday we started the day with our complimentary buffet breakfast in the lodge by their beautiful fire. After that Olive Skyped in to her school orientation session for next year - pretty cool that the school could organise that while we were interstate. Then we headed out on our cradle mountain adventure walk. We walked some of the way around Dove Lake and had lunch by the lake.

In the afternoon we drove back to Gowrie park camp ground and toasted some marshmallows in the fire surrounded by the mountain scape.

Launceston

On Tuesday we headed north to Launceston where we went on a zip line adventure tour! We all had a blast flying through the tree tops - Cherie HD a slight fear of heights which she overcame to have a great morning.

That afternoon we headed to cattaract gorge on jumped on the chair lift there. The chairlift deactivated Cherie’s fear of heights. The gorge was also home to a family of peacocks.

That evening we spent the night in a town call Ross , which is home to a Female Factory. Still haven’t figured out what that is...

Dinner at the pub, where olive fell asleep on the table.

Our last night in tassie
